korra and asami were married in the water tribe about a half a year following the conclusion of the " ruins of the empire " graphic novel series. despite her fears that the water tribe would ostracize or even exile her for betraying tribal tradition , kya , the sister of her airbending mentor tenzin , convinced her to disclose her relationship to her parents. tonraq , then chief of the southern water tribe , and her mother senna , both immediately approved both of her decision and of asami. there were still , of course , members of the water tribe that spoke out against this , still clinging to the traditional conservatism into which they were born , but neither the avatar nor the woman she loved paid any mind: korra would have risked losing the tribe’s support if it meant keeping asami in her life , but with her parent’s support , they were able to proceed. korra , following the traditions of the water tribe , carved asami a betrothal necklace , and proposed marriage to her at the site of the republic city spirit portal , where they had taken their first voyage alone together following the events of the legend of korra series. the ceremony was held in the south , in sparse accommodation , and despite the large media scrum that usually accompanies the actions of the avatar , it was limited to only friends and family. korra and asami remain happily married to this day , with korra fulfilling her duties as the avatar , and asami right at her side , while working to rebuild both republic city and the former earth kingdom territories conquered by kuvira.
