And Alastor as just doing cannibalism for the horrific vibes and, sometimes, a bit. Alastor who, as a confirmed bachelor in life, actually taught himself to cook pretty well, but makes sure that he is seen eating raw deer carcasses by the hotel crew so that they don’t end up roping him into cooking duties on top of everything else. Alastor who eventually settles in enough at the hotel to start making actual meals for himself, only to learn that everyone else at the hotel is like the worst kind of college roommate that WILL go through the fridge and steal portions as if you aren’t well aware of how much food you prepared. Alastor who begins to, at the beginning very blatantly, and eventually more subtly, put human remains in all of his leftovers like he’s adding a ton of spice to a sandwich that would otherwise be stolen out of the communal office fridge. Alastor who also periodically just lies on Tupperware labels. “Long Pork Stock” but it’s literally just regular soup.

Everyone slowly learning to leave well enough alone, because Alastor’s food always has crazy stuff in it, except for the rare occasion that Angel Dust is high out of his mind with an ungodly case of the munchies (and tells Alastor candidly that people-polenta should be a bit runnier than that, actually—haha like they were running away, get it) or that Lucifer simply does not read clear labels and, when confronted, waves it off as not REALLY cannibalism, anyway, because HE’S not human.

I think it added layers.

She casually offers him her contacts to snatch up open territory. He brings her flowers with bad news. She spins him around in a hug in public and broad daylight and he makes a happy little deer sound about it without looking even remotely perturbed. He comes by to complain like a sullen teen often enough that Rosie knows instinctively when to grab the gin. She slots herself into a grandma/auntie role when he shows up with Charlie in the wings. He plots and schemes and threatens everything he knows she’s been working towards. She smiles indulgently at him when she realizes he’s just pitching a fit about his staff again.

What other fics do you recommend? I always reckon folks who write fics I like are likely to have great recs :)

bright minstrel and marshal of storms is a human AU in which the Vees and Alastor are tornado chasers who annoy each other through TOS violations

when the flies fell is another human AU (kinda) in which Alastor gets possessed by the Radio demon and Vox and Alastor have to exorcise a demon - it has some of the best human Alastor I've ever read and the dialogue is such a joy, like ughh I want to eat this author's writing so badly

In Beyond the Eight Ball Alastor finds himself in an alternate universe of Pentagram City in which everything is different and much more dangerous than he is prepared for

For only Alastor-centric fics:

In Eat Your Morals Alastor finds himself caring for the Hotel and has to cut it out of himself in the most fucked up way possible

And one of my absolute favorite HH works, You've Got a Face for Radio (written even before S1) which is an absolutely delightful exploration of Alastor and his asexuality and I reread it every few months

I imagine them meeting at a bar that plays electroswing, a perfect blend of modern and retro music. Vox, who also grew up in the 20-30’s, can keep up with Alastor‘s vigorous jitterbug.

You ever think about ‘Stayed Gone’ as a song they wrote together about their partnership? I do.
