The portal had been unlike any Aithne had ever seen or felt before; magic more powerful than even that of the Wizard, who had persisted so far after the first Seasonal Maidens.

The portal had also spat Aithne out into a warzone. Grimm were everywhere, howling and snapping at the feet of what could only be Academy students, as young as they were, charging into buildings and killing citizens and Hunters alike.

One young woman was standing against a massive black mastiff, shoulder stiff and sword held steady before her. A wind blew, cold and forboding, as glyphs - Schnee glyphs, a voice whispered in the back of her mind - sprung into a harsh white glow beneath her feet.

“At your back!” She howls, vaulting in from her perch. In the weak sunlight, Ruby Solaria gleams golden, wreathed in ruby flames, as she plunges the blade into the Grimm’s mask, leaping backwards as the mastiff vanishes into ashes mid-howl.

“You have to watch out,” Aithne snaps, turning to look at the pale girl. “Where is your team? Should you not be with them?”

There was an unnatural chill in the air today, but Aithne wasn’t worried. The approaching aura was familiar, in both its chill and gentle nature. It had been years, after all, since she had felt it, faint as it was.

The winter maiden. Aithne hadn’t seen the woman since her younger years, fresh after the razing of Tir ‘anan, and the death of her grandmother and mother. She hadn’t even known the woman all that well, sparse as their interactions had been through the haze of guilt guilt anger grief Aithne had worn like a shroud.

“Lady Shebani,” Aithne says, turning around. “It’s been years.”
