“Must you stop at every animal that you see.” August complained, tipping his head back as he cursed the sky as the other had somehow managed to pull food for the birds out of nowhere. “Where did you even get that from?”

“Oh hey.” Tristan said, faltering as he walked out of the showers to find someone waiting, “Were you looking for me or?”

“I was, didn’t think someone would actually send me in here to find you though.” August commented, rolling up his sleeves from the heat. “I’m guessing you’ve just finished physical training?”

“I guess if the world’s going to end if we don’t, maybe it’s time we make an effort to get along,” Harlow agreed with a sigh. It wasn’t only the consequences that were shifting her answer. August looked really torn up about this. Like he was willing to give it all a go. He had never done her any real harm and vice versa, perhaps they could figure out a way to even be friends? Even if it was to simply avoid upsetting the fates. “You’re not the worst person to be stuck with for eternity,” Harlow added, extending a hand out to him. “Let’s figure out this fake but very real marriage thing together.”

“I-... never said the world was going to end, that’s just you being over-dramatic.” August commented, the sharp comment making him flinch ever so slightly because he had spoken about getting along only moments before and then he went and threw in a comment like that. It was going to take some time. “You know, I was just thinking the same thing- I mean, I get ice cream out of this, so really I’m the winner. You have no benefits of being stuck with me.” He winked before taking her hand to shake, “We’ll plan for an autumn event.” He teased. 

“That…” Harlow sighed softly, “That’s easily the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me and well… ditto,” she admitted. They two were like cat and dog most of the time, but she didn’t wish ill on August. It’s one of the reasons she just wanted to break off the engagement– so he could find someone who could love him properly. “Death or eternal unhappiness is super uncool, although I don’t see why the universe thought it’d be a good idea to rope us in together. Sounds like the Fates just wanted to have something entertaining to watch over, huh?” Harlow rambled, trying to understand all of this. The engagement ring on her finger feeling like it was burning her skin all of a sudden. When he had brought up their parents it was hard to think about. They were such good people. They deserved to be together. And for some reason, the universe didn’t want that. So why Harlow and August then? What was so special that the universe decided they should be together? Then again the two were born on the same day at the same time, so something weird was always following her and August around. “So, fall wedding then?”

“I can be nice, despite what you think.” August told the other with a small snort, “But I’m with you on it being super uncool.” Because he didn’t want anything to happen to the other, he truly believed his annoyance with her and the fact he was so against this was because he felt his freedom and control was being stripped from him, something he hated. He was being forced into something, told what to do despite what he wanted and then when his powers clicked in and things were confirmed, he felt like he was being pushed further into a corner with no escape and honestly- he shouldn’t have taken it out on Harlow. But she was a big part of this and it was easier to blame her and his parents then to simply accept the facts. He let out a noise when she mentioned a fall wedding, “Look- I know I haven’t been the easiest person to get along with, I know I haven’t been exactly... nice to you. But now everything is out in the open and weights have been lifted-.. sort of. How about we actually, I don’t know- try to make this work. I’m not saying we try to be the perfect husband and wife to be, but we could at least try to be platonic.”

“Hey– you make it sound like I’m a tyrant. Which I am not,” she scoffed, not amused by his teasing. “You’re… you’re fucking kidding me,” Harlow sighed. “What are we supposed to do? We can’t stand one another and now you’re telling me we have to spend our lives together otherwise the world will explode or something? Merry Christmas to us I guess.”

“Calm down, it’s not like there’s anyone here to hear me and you know I’m only joking. Mostly.” He added to the end, low under his breath so the other was less likely to hear him. “I wish I was.” He sighed, throwing his hands in the air when the other asked what they were supposed to do, “We’re supposed to get married, there is no way out of this, Harlow. Despite us despising one another I don’t want to see you dead or heartbroken because we’ve gone against the fates.” He confessed, his expression softening as he spoke. “That’s what happened to our parents when they tried to be together, one of them was to die because of the consequences of them trying to be together when it was not meant to be. It broke their hearts to separate but it was what was needed. I don’t blame them for arranging our engagement if it meant they wouldn’t lose a child.”

“I have such a strong urge to punch you in the arm right now but given our circumstances I will spare you. This time,” Harlow shot him a narrowed gaze. Her expression shifted at his response, “Because this is a big fucking deal. What was she right about? It can’t be that whole soulmate crap… right? It’s not the soulmate crap is it? Please tell me it’s not the soulmate crap.”

“Had I known all it took was bad weather to stop you attacking me I would have asked an atmokinesis to lend a hand ages ago.” August continued to tease, though his manner changed as the other harped on about his power and his words that he had wished he had kept to himself. Sighing deeply, he rested a hand on his head, “We’re destined to be together, Harlow- it’s written in fate and I know what happens if we try to mess with it. So yes, it is the soulmate crap as you so kindly put it.”

“Ah true–” she snapped her fingers, “I don’t really feel the cold like people who… don’t have ice powers would,” Harlow admitted in passing, hearing him agree to the ice cream. “Hot fudge sundae coming right up,” she nodded. “Yes well, I shouldn’t have even really opened today considering the weather, but here we are,” the brunette sighed. “So– don’t think you’re getting off easy here,” she began just as she started scooping flavors into the glass bowl, “What did you mean when you said your mom was right?”

“So you’re telling me that Disney actually put out something factual when making Frozen, ‘the cold never bothered you anyways?’” He commented, a rather amused expression on his face, though it didn’t last long when the other brought up that rather unpleasant topic of conversation again. “Why can’t you just drop this Harlow?” He asked, knowing this time it was harder to evade her, given they were snowed in together.

“Can I interest you in a sundae? On the house, considering the circumstances of course,” Harlow offered as she looked at the storm outside. There was no way they were getting out of here anytime soon. Funny how August had seemed to come by the ice cream shop just in time to get snowed in with her.

“Are you seriously asking me if I want ice cream in zero degree weather?” August asked before letting out a small sigh, “Sure- why not, at least put some hot fudge on it though.” He commented, moving over from the window and to the counter where the other was. “I should have gone straight home, I could have been on the couch by now if I had.”

“Hey, I don’t appreciate you talking to me like that,” Harlow snapped back, sensing the tension rise in between them. Nothing uncommon really. The two fought a lot more than they’d ever let slip to their parents. “Well it runs in the family for me too and yet I ended up a real life Elsa,” she muttered. Despite the jealousy she displayed, there were times she was really grateful to be different. Clairvoyance had caused so much pain for their parents. “That’s your solution to everything. Just leave it alone. Not talk about it. You can’t close yourself up to everything forever, August,” she insisted. Suddenly her eyes went wide. Had he really just said what she thought he had said? “August…” Harlow began, her words sounding careful all of a sudden, “What do you mean that your mother was right?”

August would have said sorry if he wasn’t so mad, sure they argued but he never truly spoke down to the other in a way that caused her to say something like that to him. “Well I’d rather have any other power then this, so really you lucked out.” August told the other, because at least she didn’t have to be burdened of the dreams and the visions that almost seemed to haunt him. “Why- why can’t I just let things lie. Why can’t I just pretend that this is something I don’t have and let it be. I never asked for this life.” Neither of them did and yet, here they were. “You know what I mean-..” August spoke softly, his hands rubbing over his face tiredly, “That dumb prophecy, the stories that they told us, their fate, our fate-... everything, it’s all true.”

“I strongly disagree,” she replied, her eyes widening slightly. “I mean how was I supposed to assume you had clairvoyance of all the possible powers? Besides, some people can be born without them even if both parents do. So I guess I thought you were just one of those cases,” Harlow admitted with a shrug, still processing all of this. “Yeah but like, not even your boss or anything?” she asked, unable to help herself. “Have you had any visions lately?”

“Well good for you to have opinions.” August commented with a small roll of his eyes, having the feeling that he was not going to be getting out of this conversation any time soon, “If I was going to have any sort of powers clairvoyance is the one that makes the most sense, since it apparently runs in the family.” August wanted to get out of this kitchen and away from the other and her questions before he snapped. “No. Not even my boss.” It didn’t take long for him to become frustrated with the other, “Why would I tell you that, why are you so obsessed with this- can’t you just leave this and me alone. Accept the fact that there was a reason I didn’t tell people about this and respect my decision not to talk about it. It’s going to be bad enough when my Mom finds out because she’s going to ask the one question we both didn’t believe the answer to and now- well now I have no choice but to tell her that she was right.”

“Well I dunno– it’s a big deal,” Harlow shrugged. “I had no clue you had powers. You could be doing so much more. Clairvoyancy? That’s huge,” she commented, trying to show she wasn’t here to poke fun at him or make him miserable. She was just genuinely curious. “Why did you never tell anyone about it?” Harlow couldn’t help but ask.

“It’s not that big of a deal.” He downplayed, he didn’t want to make it a big deal. Not with what he knew and what his mother had told him, everything she told him about fate that he called out with bullshit was in fact true and he knew that now. Which made things a lot more complicated. “Much more then using them to make sure the people who leave HQ come back in one piece? I put in the hard work but did you really think I just happened to be that good at my job?” He told the other, wondering if Harlow really was clueless to the fact that he had any kind of abilities. When the other asked why he didn’t tell anyone, he couldn’t help but let out a long sigh before speaking once again, “You know why I didn’t tell anyone, Harlow.”

“Hey, excuse me, you work here right?” Tristan asked, “I’m still new and I am most definitely lost. Could you tell me where Training Room 3 is?”

Coffee in hand, August looked to the blond male and realised that the new troops of newbies were going to be filtering in more and more now, which was great for HQ, but he felt a lot of headaches coming on for him. “Just assume that anyone who is walking around here with a cup of coffee and a tired expression on their face, works here.” August replied, “But here- I’ll take you, it’s on my way back to my desk anyways.”

“Harlow huh? You being her Knight in Shining armor are you?” Though he had to laugh the next second, nodding his head in understanding. “I get that. No one likes a girl when they are hangry. It raises the chances of them killing you to about 95% instead of the normal 50%.”

Will rubbed at the bridge of his nose slightly and gave a sigh, tired but also glad that there were some places still open. A takeaway called right now so he was waiting for his number to be called.  “Looks like someone had the same idea as me.”

“It’s not necessarily for me.” August told the other from where he was leaning against the wall, “I’m bringing it back for Harlow, I don’t want to go home after all of this and for her to be hangry at me.”

“Hi to you too,” she said as if in disappointment when the other walked in and brought her some food without so much as a word. Harlow fought her urge to admit she had been worried about him when it had taken him so long to get home, but she kept her mouth shut. It took her a moment before she got up and made her way to the kitchen, lingering by the doorframe. “So are we just… not going to talk about the clairvoyant elephant in the room?”

“That’s the plan.” August commented, the first words he had spoken since arriving home, he had almost been counting down the minutes until the other brought up the topic and he had to give her credit, she succeeded a minute longer then he had expected. “After all, what is there to talk about really.”
