“Don’t underestimate the power of perseverance.”​

Mari pursed her lips as she heard the comment and she finally turned around to properly face the man who’d spoken. “There’s plenty of tables all around.” she commented, motioning to the others. “You can sit wherever you want. Or if you want this one in particular, you’ll have to wait a minute or two more.”

Stupidly, naively, a part of her had been hopeful that he would tell her differently. That he would say that things were different, that he was ready to try again, to open up to her. For just a brief moment, as he leaned closer to her, she believed it, her heart betraying her by breaking faster, louder. Then he pulled the rug underneath her by adding what he did next. She blinked, thinking momentarily that she had misheard him. When she realized that she hadn’t, she stared at him incredulously before pushing at his chest and stepping back. 

“You’re asking me out because you want to have me again?” she huffed. “So this is why you’re here? You’re horny and decided to have one last fuck before we go our separate ways?” Her heart was hammering in her chest still, but out of anger now. “I can’t believe you. This is low. Even for you.”

Augustus quickly realized his error in wording and a smirk formed by her reaction and how angry she became. It was attractive in it’s own right, and he was pleased to see the fight in her. It meant she hadn’t changed from the woman he’d once known as his own. He reached out, tentatively brushed his thumb over her cheek and then dropped it once more.

She had to force herself to stay put as he came closer, wanting to step back and put more distance between them again. It was safer that way. Being too close, it made things more complicated, made it harder for her to remember why she had chosen to end things. She frowned when he took his hand, hating how right it felt. She also felt silly for not just healing the cut herself, but logic was hardly her strongest suit around him.

She swallowed nervously before nodding. “Better,” she clarified. 

She could tell his guard was back up and she sighed quietly to herself. She shouldn’t have expected anything different. She was about to retract her hand, but pure surprise had her frozen in her spot. “You came to invite me for a meal?” she repeated dumbfoundedly, before the words caught up to her and she looked at him skeptically, finally withdrawing her hand. “Why? Nothing’s changed,” she said, her voice hard, despite how challenging it always was for her to refuse him, refuse how she felt.

Augustus knew Morgan wasn’t completely over what they had, she couldn’t be, and he truly believed that. He knew the reasons she’d ended things, and honestly understood, but it didn’t mean they couldn’t try again and have this. For once, he wanted to tell her things, but wasn’t great at emotions or how to handle them. In his years alive, it was something he once took pride in, and now didn’t know how to change.

When she said she was better, a smile formed at the corner of his lips, knowing she was falling under his haze yet again. Whether it was what she wanted or not, was another thing altogether. She was a strong woman and it wouldn’t be easy to have her believe he wanted to do things different and be better than he’d been during them short time together. Her tone was almost incredulous with his suggestion, but he’d expected it from her.

Hello, Morgan. 

She’d recognize that voice anywhere. Still, it startled her enough to make her cut her thumb open on a thorn, blood trickling down her skin. “Shit,” she swore quietly, popping the finger into her mouth before turning towards him fully. She was - somewhat - used to seeing him around the city. He was the sheriff after all, she was bound to run into him from time to time. But it was different, him coming here. She was entirely unprepared for that. 

She quirked an eyebrow at his compliment, unsure whether she believed him. She had her hair in a messy bun and a rather unsexy apron over her clothes, covered in pollen and small twigs. Her sliced thumb was the icing on the cake. “Augustus,” she greeted as she removed her finger from her mouth. “Thanks. You, uh, look good too.” For him, it was true, at least. But he always looked good.

A thought hit her, then. Maybe he wasn’t here to see her, but rather, for the shop itself. “Uh… Can I help you with something?” She glanced around, trying inconspicuously to wipe her still bleeding thumb off in her apron.

Augustus tried hard not to stare at the beauty before him. Sure, she was unkempt at the moment, but her beauty still managed to shine through the messy hair and now bleeding finger. He walked closed to her side, having no thoughts about leaving her in such a state. He gingerly took her hand in his and with a silent thought, was mending the wound with his strong powers. She could have easily done the same on her own, but he had no thoughts of letting her have to care for herself.

Sure, he wasn’t as open as others might be, but it didn’t mean he didn’t care. She’d often prodded him to open up to her, something he wasn’t great at, most of his past hidden away with the darkness he was determined to overcome. He didn’t want her ashamed of him, after all. “Better?” he asked, voice soft in the quiet of the room.

Mariana had been on her feet all day–like she was every day working as a waitress at the diner in the city. The last patrons at one of her outside tables had left a mess, food scattered everywhere, coffee spilled, and she sighed, leaning over as she tried to clean it all up best (and as fast) as she could. When she heard someone clearing their throat behind her she sighed, stopping what she was doing and turning, “Can I help you?”

Augustus: Moodboard 1

It always took her by surprise when a superior bother to ask her name. “I’m Violet.” She said answering his question, always being careful to not speak more than she should. “What could I get for you sir?” she asked not wanting to bring him the wrong drink.

Kade ignored the question with a roll of his eyes and turned to leave. But, he didn’t make it far. There was a sudden tug on his wrist that dragged him back toward the other. Fuck. Digging his feet into the floor didn’t do much and he slid across the open grass toward him, stopping just in front of him. “Point made.” His head tilted back in defiance. “You done?” he asked bitterly.

Kade flashed the obnoxious gold band around his wrist toward the person who had asked him for a refill on their drink. Though he didn’t like the idea of being rented for the night, it admittedly did have its benefits. This being one of them. “I’m not at your beck and call tonight, Prince Charming,” he answered dryly, his initial sneer pulling into a smirk. “Try again.”

Violet was working at the ball, she was wearing a simple white dress, it was way better than the clothes she normally wears, but it was still way simpler compared to everyone else. “Would you care for a drink sir?” She said to the man since her task was to offer a drink for anyone that didn’t have a glass on their hand.
