"Mum I have to leave," you speak up as she walks past. Sam overhears you say that and looks at you with a smirk.
"what Sam?" you ask, she scoffs at your question
"leaving already?" she says sarcastically
You roll your eyes, "Yes I am, do you have a problem with that?"
She chuckles a little "No, but can't stand being around me for a few hours?"
"Don't get too full of yourself,"
she raises an eyebrow at you and walks over toward you "I'm not. Just stating the obvious."
"I've got places to be Kerr," she scoffs at your comment
"Places to be, like what? Avoiding me?" she says in a teasing tone
"No, like a job," she looks around then focuses her eyes back on you.
She lets out a laugh, " A job? Really? You're gonna leave this family reunion early for work?"
"I see my family all the time because unlike you I actually have time for them," you state
"Oh wow. Look at you, being all mature and responsible. It's almost impressive," she says with another laugh
"At least I'm mature," she smirks again
"Oh, and what makes you think I'm not mature?" she says as she leans against the wall, crossing her arms.
"Everything about you seems immature Samantha," she rolls her eyes at your comment.
"Oh, really? You're one to talk. You're the one who's always been jealous of me."
You stand up from your seat, "I'm not, and never will be jealous of you,"
"Oh, please. You can't stand that I'm better than you at everything, can you? That's why you've always been so rude to me." she says raising an eyebrow
"Yeah, I'm rude because I just can't stand you," you say reaching for your shoes.
She laughs, amused by your honesty, "I feel the same way about you. You're insufferable.
"Fun," you say bitterly.
She grins, enjoying the banter, "Yeah, it's almost entertaining. But seriously, you really need to work on your attitude."
"Seems like you're talking to a mirror," you say, keeping up the bitter tone.
She snorts at your response, "Oh, I'm the one who needs to work on my attitude? You're the one who's been a dick to me since we were kids."
You laugh at her response, "Oh I was a dick? You were the one who always had to one-up me and show off to everybody else." you say while sitting down on the bench and setting your shoes down next to you.
She rolls her eyes again, "Because you always challenged me."
"Whatever, I have to go." You state while standing up rather aggressively.
She watches you leave, a smirk on her face, "See you around loser"
"If you even come back," you yell over your shoulder.
She laughs and calls out after you, "Oh, I'll be back. Don't you worry about that."
"Whatever," you yell
She watches you disappear into the distance, still smiling "Still as stubborn as ever. I'll give you that."
--------------
"Mum I'm here!" you yell into the house
Your mum comes out to greet you, "Hey, sweetie. How was your day?"
"It was good, work was super tiring. I feel like I haven't seen you in ages," you say pulling her into a hug.
She hugs you back tightly, "I know, I've missed you too. Come into the tea room, I've got some ready for you sweetheart."
You smile and pull back from the hug, "All right"
she leads you into the kitchen and pours you a cup of tea, "So how's work, and the girls?"
"They are good, preseason is getting stressful with the early morning weightlifting, we had to do so much running yesterday because Lorelei was late," you say with a sigh
She smiles sympathetically "That sounds rough. But I'm sure you're handling it like a champ. You've always been a hard worker and you've always dreamed of competing on the professional stage for Hockey. Look at you now sweetheart you are on your way to the Olympics, everybody is so proud of you."
you smile at her, "I know Sam isn't, what's her problem anyway?"
Your mum chuckles, "Oh, Sam? She's always been a bit of a hothead. She's never been one to back down from a challenge."
"Tell me about it, at the reunion she was on my ass for no reason." You say while picking up your cup.
Your mum takes a sip of her tea, "Well, I know you two have always had a bit of a rivalry, but it seems like things have gotten worse. Do you want to talk about it, honey?"
You sigh resting your hand on your hand, "I just wish she'd calm down and we could be friends like we used to. Ever since the accident, she's just been different."
She nods understandingly, "I can understand that. It's always hard to reconcile with someone you've had a rocky relationship with. But maybe you could try talking to her and see if you can work things out."
you scoff lightly, "It all just goes in one ear and out the other for her."
she sighs, "I know, sometimes people can be hard to reason with. But it's worth the shot. You never know, she might surprise you."
"Probably not," You laugh
your mum gives you a reassuring smile, "Just try not to let it get to you too much, okay? She's not worth your energy. Focus on yourself and the people who really care about you. Focus on the things you are working towards."
Suddenly there was a loud knock at the door
"Who's that mum?"
She looks towards the door, "I'll go check," She gets up and walks over to the door, opening it to reveal Sam standing there.
"Wonderful" you scoff
Sam smirks as she walks into the house, "Hey, look who it is If it isn't my favorite person."
"Why are you here?" you ask sending an icy glare her way.
Sam rolls her eyes, "I was invited, genius. Just like you."
"Mom?" You ask her way
your mom smiles sheepishly, "I invited her. I thought it would be nice for everyone to catch up."
You stand up suddenly, "After what I just said you went behind my back and invited her come on mum!"
Your mum sighs, "I know, I know. But I didn't want things to be awkward anymore. I thought maybe you two could work things out."
"Sam doesn't work things out. All she does is fucking insult me." You say with a laugh.
Sam scoffs, "Excuse me? I don't always insult you. You just can't handle the truth because you're a baby."
you glare at her, "See, an insult."
Sam rolls her eyes again, "That wasn't an insult, it was a statement. You can't handle the truth, so you just get all defensive."
"And you can't handle the fact that I'm going to the Olympics this year while you're stuck on your couch with your fucked up knee," you say shoving her.
Sam's smirk falters for a moment, replaced by a flash of anger, "Oh, you're really going to bring that up? My knee injury has nothing to do with anything. I still have more talent in my pinky toe than you have in your entire body."
"Whatever you say,"
Sam crosses her arms, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "You know, I really don't know why I bother trying to have a conversation with you. You're so goddamn arrogant and stubborn."
"And you're self-centered and rude."
Sam laughs sarcastically, "Me? Self-centered? You're the one who can't handle it when someone else is better than you. You're so threatened by my talent that you have to bring up my knee injury to make yourself feel better."
"Maybe you just can't handle the taste of your own medicine. Don't think I forgot when the roles were reversed in high school and I had to quit the team right before the national team roster came out. Right before nationals."
Sams smirk is now replaced by a scowl, "Oh, so now you're bringing up the past, huh? You think you can just throw that at my face and it'll hurt me? Well, guess what, I've moved on from high school. Unlike you, I'm focused on my career, not dwelling on petty grudges."
"I wouldn't dwell on it if it wasn't your fault in the first place," you say throwing a glare at her.
Sam takes a step closer to you, her eyes narrowing, "My fault? You're the one blaming me for your own shortcomings. You're the one who got injured, not me. I had nothing to do with it."
You scoffed at her response, "Nothing to do with it? You're the fucking one who pushed me on purpose making me break my hip."
Sam's eyes widen in disbelief, "You think I pushed you on purpose? You're delusional. I didn't push you. You fell on your own."
"Last I remembered it was your hands pushing me into the bench so you could get the ball." Sam rolls her eyes at this
"Okay, so maybe I was a little too aggressive in trying to get the ball. But that doesn't mean I pushed you on purpose. It was an accident." she says clearly frustrated
"You still pushed your own teammate," you shout at her
Sam clenches her fists, her voice rising, "I was trying to win, okay? I wanted to make the team go to nationals. I didn't mean to hurt you. But you know what? I don't regret it. If it means we won, then it was worth it."
"You're a horrible person you know that you fucking ruined my chance to play out the end of my season and play football professionally, just because you wanted the goal and I had the ball." You say with a tear falling down your cheek.
Sams expression hardens, "I'm not a horrible person. I'm just driven. I'm not going to apologize for being competitive. You should have passed the ball to be instead of holding onto it. It's not my fault you got hurt."
"It is tough," you say looking down at your feet
Sam takes a deep breath, trying to keep her cool, "I don't have time for this. I came here to visit family, not to argue with you. So, if you're going to keep blaming me for your own mistakes, then I'm done talking to you."
"Fuck you Sam, I wish I had never even met you," Sam smirks at this.
"The feeling is mutual, trust me," Sam says, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Mum I'm leaving, I can't handle the ego dripping from this bitches mouth," you say sending a harsh look towards Sam.
Your Mum gives you a concerned look, but Sam just laughs. "Good riddance. Maybe you'll finally learn some manners and stop being such a sore loser."
"I'm not a sore loser, you're a bitch who can't own up to her own mistakes." You say giving her shoulder a shove
Sam shrugs, unbothered by your insults, "Oh, I own up to my mistakes. I just don't let them define me. I learned from them and became better. But you? You're still stuck in the past, unable to move on. It's sad, really."
You look at her in disbelief, "I can't move on from it because I never got an apology. Do you know the amount of nights I spent screaming not only in physical but mental pain? Mum tell her, tell her how much she fucking ruined my life."
Your mum looks uncomfortable, but speaks up, "Sam, I understand that you didn't mean to hurt my daughter. But you did, she was in a lot of pain and it took a long time for her to recover. You need to apologize and take responsibility for your actions."
You look over at Sam, "You ruined my chance."
Sam rolls her eyes again, but there's a hint of guilt in her expression, "Oh, please. You think you're so special, don't you? You're just another player who didn't make the cut. I'm the one who's special. I'm the one who made it to the national team. I'm the one that went pro. So, get over yourself."
"Exactly what I said earlier, Mum, she's not going to own up to it so it is no use," you say with a sigh
Your mum sighs, clearly frustrated, "You're both so stubborn. Sam, Apologise. It's the least you can do."
You take a seat, "I don't even want to hear it now, I miss the girl you used to be."
Sam crosses her arms, a look of irritation on her face, "The girl I used to be? What, the girl who was nice and caring? She's gone. I've grown up and realized that I don't have to be everyone's friend. I have bigger things to worry about than your feelings."
You look up at her, "I miss the girl who was my best friend, who always had my back no matter what. Now you're just, I don't even know how to describe it."
Sam's expression softens slightly, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes, "I miss her too. But she's gone. She grew up and realized that friendships don't last forever. Life gets complicated and sometimes people change. But I still remember the good times we had."
Your face softens, "Then why can't you realize what you did was wrong?"
Sam looks away, avoiding eye contact, "I don't want to talk about this anymore. It was an accident. I didn't mean to hurt you. But it's done. I can't change the past.
You look her way again, "But you can apologize for it."
Sam takes a deep breath, her voice softer now, "Fine. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for hurting you and ruining your chances. But I can't change the past, and I can't take back what I did. I'm just sorry, okay?"
You look over towards your mum, "Mum give us a moment please."
Your Mum nods and steps away, giving you and Sam some privacy.
"Come here," You say reaching your arms out
Sam reluctantly steps closer to you, still looking defensive.
"Hug?" you ask
Sam hesitates for a moment, but then slowly wraps her arms around your waist, giving you a tight hug.
You hug her back, "I'm sorry"
Sam's hug tightens slightly, and she whispers softly, "No I'm sorry. I should have apologized a long time ago. I just didn't know how to face you after what happened."
"It's okay," you say hugging her tightly
Sam pulls away from the hug, a small smile on her face “I’ve missed you, you know. It’s been weird without you around.
“Me too,” you say smiling back at her.
Sam looks at you, her eyes filled with a mix of nostalgia and sadness “I’ve been so caught up in my own life, I didn’t realize how much I missed having you around. You were my best friend, and I messed it all up.”
“You always have been Sammy” you say pulling her back into another tight hug.

I didn’t exactly explain my last post, I’m going to be taking a break from social media to better help my mental health. I’ve been going through a hard time and I’ve had to sacrifice some of my relationships so I can get better on my own. I’m not sure when I’ll be back but hopefully one day when I’m fully healthy again I’ll be back and better.
