so lawrence does everything to make sure adam doesn't end up in the trap. he approaches him when adam is taking his photos, somehow charms his was into becoming his friend, helps him out, helps him find a less shady line of work. he knows a vet in the city and recommends adam for a receptionist job at the clinic. on the other hand lawrence never meets carla at the motel, he never overworks himself and makes sure he finds time for diana

but the more lawrence succeeded at making them both appreciate life enough not to get thrown in a saw trap, the more he starts to forget. one day he's looking at photos of adam and takes a few minutes to place his name. when he's about to get dressed to meet him, it takes him a while to remember who he was gonna go out to meet.

one day adam says he's saved enough to go back to school. lawrence suggests they celebrate. he'll cook for them. he rides a bus to adam's building but as soon as he gets off, he forgets adam completely. doesn't remember whose building this is. doesn't remember why he hopped on the bus in the first place.

so he walks away.

adam doesn't understand why he gets stood up, that's nothing like the lawrence he knows, so he calls him, and lawrence insists he's got the wrong number, maybe he's meant to call another "lawrence gordon" from the phone book. adam doesn't think the prank is funny, so he goes to lawrence's house. lawrence is horrified, how did this man know where he lives? yeah he looks familiar but he's sure he's never met him before. he's almost sure... no, he's really sure. wait - how does he know diana? how does he know so much about him and his family?! this isn't safe. he tells adam to leave or else he'll call the police. so adam does as he's told.

when adam leaves, lawrence feels heavy in his chest. it lingers for days, for weeks. a void so deep and empty and overwhelming that it bleeds through other parts of his life. it's something his own wife can't seem to fill. so he's driven back to his old ways, starts flirting with the interns again, going out with them for coffee, seeing where it goes.

not too far from him (but never close enough), adam's reverted to his old ways too — a voyeur, watching lawrence, trying to piece together what happened, what changed.

one night he's following lawrence from a seedy motel from the other side of town. he planned on confronting him then but before he could get closer, he sees a figure come out of lawrence's car, some freak with a pig mask. it attacks lawrence, but before adam could run to help, he gets knocked out himself.

they wake up in the bathroom, and things that are supposed to happen, happen. lawrence tells him he's not a victim of the game, he's a part of it. adam says lawrence acts like he knows him, and lawrence doesn't know what to say to that.

after the chaos, after adam bludgeons zep to death, lawrence crawls towards him, holds him, calms him down. he couldve left out the door right away but something in him was pulling him the other way. the void gone, it felt second nature to go to adam first, to tell him he's going to be okay, to promise him he's going to bring someone back to help.

when he makes it out and cauterizes his wound, he still hears adam's screaming. he feels he's heard this far too many times, and he can't stand another second of it. he wills himself to start moving again, but he fails.

fighting for consciousness, he hears a large door shut and adam's screaming becomes muffled.

the man who shot himself dead, the one lying in the middle of the bathroom is now kneeling in front of him. he thinks, he must be death; he's come for me...

but instead of telling him he's died, the man says something far worse.

"you failed again, dr. gordon. start over?"

Today, this Tuesday, October 10, 2023, is not just any Today, Tuesday, October 10, 2023. No, this particular Today is actually World Mental Day, 2023, an initiative led by the World Health Organization. The theme for this year's event is simple, but powerful: mental health is a universal human right. But let's face it, y'all knew that anyway. Mental health is a universal human right. This means everyone, whoever they are, of every community, and wherever they may be, should have the right to the best available standard of mental health. What they should have is the right to be protected from mental health risks and access to the best quality care.
