Writing in Transit: Chapter 7 

This week’s reading was all about analysis, It is important not only for academic writing and such, but it can also help us to make decisions and observations on our everyday lives. The chapter described how analysis can be done in different methods and produce different results to different people, also stating that forms of analysis can differ from discipline to discipline. There are various types of data that can be analyzed those of which include visual, textual, quantitative, etc. To achieve an effective analysis, one must have a thorough understanding of the purpose of research that is being conducted, and the data that one analyzes should be specifically linked to that purpose. Apart from there being varying forms of data that a person could analyze, there are also various types of analysis, which include rhetorical analysis, Big Data analysis, Scientific Data analysis, etc., each category more fitting for a certain type of discipline. 

Accounting is a field that requires quite the bit of analysis because we analyze quantitative data, like numbers found in financial statements, etc., to know whether a business has been making a profit or has been losing money. With the information gathered from the analysis, decisions regarding that business can then be made. This really put into perspective that one must be really effective and thorough when analyzing the data,  because if not then the conclusions drawn from the analysis can be misleading, which in the accounting field, is not acceptable. 

This reading helped me understand that performing an accurate analysis, as well as having the right kind of data, is important especially with an assignment like the Genre Analysis, because it can lead you to a more favorable conclusion. Not only that, but int can also help you write and present your data in an effective manner.

Happy Summer 2017! My name is Diego Velazquez, I am a student just like you enrolled in this summer RWS 2017 course. Here’s a little post to get to know me well. Lets get started!

I was born and raised in El Paso, TX. My mom and dad were both born in Chihuahua. I love everything about El Paso besides  the hot weather. If I had a choice, I would love to live in somewhere really cold, preferably Colorado. Lets get back on track about me, I am currently 20 years old, I love to hang out with friends, play basketball and play professional paintball. Here’s a good example of the type of paintball I play :)

I have played locally and around the world, I have won prizes and trophies at paintball tournaments with my team. I feel like paintball is my true passion as it helps me build very well team building and communication skills. Overall, lets just say I like sports.

When Im not laughing my (explicit) ass* off, I am mainly working. I currently work at Chick-Fil-A on Mesa Street. I have been working there for around 3 years since our grand opening. I am a team leader and honestly I can say that I love my job. Not only is the food great It has taught me so many things in terms of customer service and overall elevating my language. I truly can say I <3 my job!  

On my academic level, I attend The University of Texas at El Paso, I am studying to be a Mechanical Engineer. I want to hopefully get my bachelors degree in ME and graduate by 2019. I am currently a sophomore, let me tell you about my experiences during college. I seriously underestimated the amount of the work and effort it takes to be an engineer, my first year was a breeze but that’s only because I was doing my basics and not actually taking any advanced engineering course like I am now. #TakeMeBackToFreshmenYear

For anyone looking to come to UTEP, I recommend you seriously do it! Its a great school for your academics and certainly a very friendly campus with clubs and events being a very good thing here :) You wont regret it!

Im currently saddened to say that I don’t have much community involvement in El Paso. Don’t really follow much besides my routine of school and work. I usually don’t have time.

In my time here as a PhD student, I have focused on rhetoric and resistance. I’m currently researching big data and social impact—think Twitter conversations and what they mean to society, people, governments, and social movements. I argue that the discourse happening on social media gives us the chance to understand real people, real desires, and can offer lots of opportunities for shared knowledge and lead the way to diplomatic, counterinsurgency, and peace building efforts worldwide. So I’m basically trying to be this guy.

I’m also researching issues of diversity and disparity among marginalized populations in various ways, like diversity among minorities and women in Higher Education. I ask questions like who’s in power, where is our voice, our place in our fields, in our jobs, in our societies, and why does it all matter?

 “How will I execute Ethos, Pathos, and Logos as a producer, creator, writer, and activist?”   

We must know what Ethos, Pathos, and Logos mean. So I decided to add the definitions to remind myself throughout this post ( and help others, hopefully.)

SECTION A: As a writer!

 1. How will you employ

Ethos?

           My homepage will carry the credibility that I am the author for the website. It will be credible because I am a student enrolled in the university of Texas at el Paso taking RWS 1302 class and I can share the experience of taking the class with professor Audrey. I will express situations and feelings I went through first had.

Pathos?

          The section that includes Assignment Reflections will carry plenty of logos. This is the section that I will express my achievements, my difficult times and my reliefs throughout the semester when working on all the assignments. I will also be sharing my experiences and thoughts on some of the readings from the required textbooks from this course when I get to the Course Reading Reflection.

Logos?

           I will cover logic with the fair use statement, informational graphics and facts. My writing fluency must stay at the same pace and rhythm. It must be well written. Including examples, pictures, facts and an in depth description when needed. Logos will be available in practically everything. For example, my homepage, the tabs I include and the text in these sections.

SECTION B: As a designer!

As a designer overall I should be able to express myself and engage my viewers visually and artistically. I should be able to capture their full attention without overwhelming them at all.

 2. How will you employ

Ethos?

           I will portray credibility through alignment and grouping. The Website must inform my peers in a professional manner. I believe that using vertical and horizontal elements can sustain a professional look if used adequately. Not too much, just enough. I would like to separate work, for example having a section dedicated to just the assignment reflections. This will cover a grouping aspect in my webpage. For example, diving sections and using correct grammar. Making sure the webpage looks up to date and all my sources are correct as well as the information I use in the sections of my webpage.

Pathos?

I will portray emotions through consistency, Contrast, and balance. My Headings will carry a bigger font size, and the same style of text and my body text will carry a smaller font size but perhaps the same text style. An ongoing feeling throughout the webpage. I would like to keep the same feeling well balanced and equally weighed. If an image expresses a strong feeling and my text from the opposite side lacks emotion that it can definitely throw off my balance, however images and graphics will weigh more than text so I must be precise with this issue. The background color will be a light gray, were I can still add images and text without overwhelming anybody and for the website to remain professional.

Logos?

So this is the last Tumblr Tuesday post I will ever have to do and I couldn’t be happier. I am so ready for the vacation!

I will also ensure that I am credible for the information I will be providing about myself.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ ethos by, using the e-book as a credible source, to summarize the readings we have explored and discussed.

Homepage/About me: I will employ Pathos as a writer in this respective section by, using an appropriate photo of myself to show credibility and imply that this is my website. I will also make sure I use the appropriate colors, sizes, and styles of font on my homepage so that it is legible for my audience.

Assignment Reflections: For this section I will employ Pathos by, showing a sense of value on all the assignments I have accomplished that way my message has an emotional impact. I will also make sure that I use colors that are simple and not too much.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ Pathos by, using emotional language to discuss how the readings met my expectations and how they were beneficial to the assignments we completed.

Homepage/About me: I will employ logos as a writer in this respective section by, providing a layout that is organized and not all over the place. Seeing those two websites helped me realize what a good website looks likes and how a bad one looks. Therefore, I will use Aarons website as an example.

Assignment Reflections: For this section I will employ logos by, providing evidence from my assignments to make my message clear. I will also make sure that this page is legible and organized for my audience.

Reading Reflections: For the last section I will employ logos by, using facts, statistics, and examples from the e-book to convey my message and show how the readings will be beneficial as I continue to develop as a writer.

Now that I am a designer, I will use ethos, pathos, and logos throughout my website.

Ethos: I will make sure that my grammar and punctuation is all correct and I will ensure that I use credible sources for all my pages in my website.

Pathos: I will ensure that the layout of my website is simple and not to colorful because as a Rhetoric writer that is not professional. I will also make sure that I use motivational appeals and emotional language for my audience.

Logos: In my website I will make sure that I use factual information, examples and quotes to convey my message. I will also make sure my website is organized and looks nice.

BOOM! I am finished with my LAST tumblr. I can finally be relieved from stress every Tuesday! Whooo Hooo!!

In order to prepare for an interview, the first step that I needed to take was to send my number one chosen scholar an email to request an interview so I went on to do so. 

After completing this step, my next step was to download and save the interview release form so on I went and I saved it to dropbox as well. 

From here I went ahead and condensed my research questions and interview questions onto a word document that would be suitable to send my chosen scholar. 

The next step in my interview checklist said to read and download the Interview Confirmation and to upload it to my dropbox as well. 

After this, my next step would be to document my recording materials. 

Thankfully my scholar replied the same day so we were able to agree on a form of the interview. Unfortunately, she is out of town until after this assignment is due so we settled on an interview via email, therefore I will only need my laptop to document this interview. 

My nerves have been settled now that I have had contact with my scholar!

So this is where the stress begins… setting up an interview is quite nerve wrecking. This is how I’m feeling!

First things first I emailed Dr. Mein because I felt she would be a great candidate to interview. Based off her research it seems like I would receive good feedback that will be very helpful for my lit  review. Here is proof that I emailed her, check it out!

Now onto the next step… in the Tumblr Tuesday directions it implies that we must download the interview release form to drop box so here it is. By the way I love drop box, it sure does save me a sprint to my car!

Third step is to create a clean document of the interview questions and the quotes from the four scholarly articles. Here they are!

For the second time I must download something to my drop box but now it is the interview confirmation. This is what it looks like.

Last but not least here are the recording materials I will be taking to the interview with Dr. Mein. YIKES! I am a little nervous but I CAN DO THIS.

With this assignment, all is needed is to come up with interview questions regarding my semester topic. Here are the results.

Advising info for me isn’t quite clear, so I might need to ask someone about that. Good thing I know how to reach someone who can give me some guidance. 

Now, I have to think about my primary research. Where are the potential scholar(s) that I might be able to interview soon? I did some digging on these website, and I found a few scholars (3 to be exact)  that may be willing and able to be interviewed. Their official titles and contact info were there and everything! Even more important was all the information found in their bio’s, this helped me find scholars with interests that connect to my own research. 

I chose Dr. Clifton because she is a professor in RWS and her research interests included in her bio state she researches rhetorical theories of democracies, decision making, and public visibility/policy in connection civilians and or constituents. This fits my own research interest because I hope to learn more about the role Twitter and the common the Egyptian woman played in the determining the democracy fought for in their Arab Spring.

I chose Dr. Coulthart because he is a professor in INSS and his research interests included in his bio state he researches Counterterrorism Policy and Middle Eastern Security. This fits my own research interest this semester because I hope to learn more about the policies in Egypt surrounding social media use, censorship, and its connection to terrorism charges during the Arab Spring.

I chose Dr. Sanchez because she is a professor in INSS and her research interests included in her bio state she researches Human Mobility Efforts, and Resistance and Insurgent Movements. This fits my own research interest this semester because I hope to learn more about the role Twitter and its potential for spreading alternate democratic ideas played in organizing protest, spreading resistant discourse, and influencing physical resistance among women in Egypt during the Arab Spring.

So after going through the college of Education this is how I’m feeling! There is so much information provided it is a little overwhelming. I wasn’t able to find the advising information so I am going to have to call for further information.

Okay now.. here are the three scholars I chose. I personally like to talk to females so I chose two female scholars.

I chose Elena Izquierdo because her Research interests were bilingual education and I can relate because my mom is a bilingual teacher at Benito Martinez.

I chose Erika Mein because her research focuses on the literacy/biliteracy practices of immigrants. This is very interesting to me so I would like to set up an interview with her and would get to know her.

I chose Maria Teresa de la Piedra because she comes from south America. She seems different I would like to hear her input on education. Her research interests are also pretty interesting.

This is a little different advising than other colleges. With the Civil Engineering department we need to attend a Group Advising were we are updated on specific things about our major; News, Class changes and stuff like that. Following this we receive an E-Mail that tells us we must now attend an individual advising session with our specific Professor which is given to us through that E-Mail as well. 

NOW FOR THE STALKING 

I Know the website does not look good but the info is there. I actually personally know Professor Perez as I had took a course with him. Great guy, he might not be part of the Civil Engineering department but he does have a lot of incite on the world within Engineering and the STEM fields. Hes been a professor to many people, WOMEN and MEN alike, with this information he can provide incite on why Women don’t really choose STEM fields.

Austin Marshall is a great candidate for research, he constantly sends all CE students emails on possible job openings. I have had personal interaction with him as I had a chance to internship under him, I did not actually get the internship but I did end up meeting him. He has been in the Game for a really long time and has come across many CE, most of them Men, and I would like to ask him why he thinks that is.

A researcher who has had many major projects for the Texas DPS, Ali Mirchi has seen handfuls of students interact with each other while doing research, I would like to ask him how different Men work than Women in these CE researches and how Women act toward the Men.

Next.. I went to the UWC and Patricia looked over my questions. Now here is the finalized product!

RQ 1. FACT: This question is important because it will provide factual evidence that diversity is important in the classroom. What I hope to achieve from this research question is the idea of all the different ethnicities and races in a classroom.

RQ 2. DEFINITION: This question is important because it gives us an understanding what it means to have many different cultures in a learning environment. What I hope to learn from this is how a teacher is able to adapt to many diverse students.

RQ 3. VALUE: This question is important because it provides information about how the lack of diversity can create conflicts within a classroom. What I hope to learn from this is all the many challenges that are faced when lacking diversity.  

RQ 4. CONSEQUENCE: This question is important because it gives the consequential impact of employing more minority teachers. I hope to learn why it is so important to have a diverse faculty.

RQ 5. INTERPRETATION: This question is important because it gives an interpretation of how diversity is an important aspect when employing teachers. What I hope to learn from this is why is it such an important factor.

RQ 6. POLICY: This question is important because it provides ethical issues that diverse students face and how the teacher can help to overcome these issues. What I hope to learn from this is what are the different issues these students face.

UWC Reflection

Going to the university writing center was very helpful. My tutor Patricia looked over my research questions and gave me positive feedback. She fixed a couple of things to make my questions sound better. After reading each question she was very positive, she had nothing negative to say. My overall trip to the writing center was great. This is my third time going and I love it there. Everyone is very helpful AND plus I love the extra credit points! #DemPointsDoe

After finishing my questions, I proceeded to the writing center.

I revised my questions to fix grammar errors, biases and elaborated more on several questions. 

The feedback I received at the writing center was extremely useful and insightful. My tutor gain me a different perspective on my topic and was able to tell me if my questions were biased or not. She stated the repetition in my question and answers. Other than restating the question, I needed to elaborate more and describe in detail what I wanted to gain from each question. Overall it was a great experience and I truly think the writing center helps students improve on their writing and help them receive a higher score.

Worked hard brainstorming my research questions, my paper is such a mess and unorganized.. I have doubts about my questions but feel relieved that I will be visiting the Writing Center!

Being my first time attending the writing center I didn’t know what to expect for some reason I thought the people there helping would be jerks and not explain into detail what was wrong with my questions. When I visited i love the environment.. and the person who helped me was very nice and patient and made me feel comfortable and I didn’t hesitate in asking questions. I will certainly visit the writing center often!

I will take you through a journey. A journey of endless screenshots and the struggle to get the right article. 

1. First , I open the guidelines posted on blackboard and I read through the Tumblr guidelines and as I read through it I realized it was something that I have done already. But do I remember it clearly? Or is it just a blur memory? So I click the link and go to the homepage. Wooo.. I don’t remember. Just kidding , my memory’s sharp. 

2. Ahh. This I used when I was in RWS 1301 class . Good for me :3. Then I logged into my UTEP account and searched the database to look for articles (peer reviewed) which would be perfect for my Semester Topic. So far so good. (y) 

3. After many clicks I got here where I can narrow down my search results because there is a whole lot of information/articles and it is important we only search for what we  are looking for. So I typed, “Diversity in Physics”, “Women” and hit search button!! Waiting for some bomb articles. 

4. And after 3 nano seconds the paged showed up 7 articles. Seven? Are you serious database? I need more choices. But what can I do, so then I begin reading the articles’s abstract and I decide to choose the first one because it was not that long, was true to the topic but I am worried about the date it was published. It was published in 2006 but I hope it works because after 10 years there still not much diversity in physics. Feeling positive. 

5. Now that I have read the abstract and decided to work on that article. I downloaded the pdf version of the article and saved in my computer. Finally. A sense of relief. (sigh) 

6. I lean back in my chair feeling relieved to have finished this assignment.But am i done already? Didn’t the prompt say something about dropbox? Yes it did!! So log in to my dropbox and upload the article. Now I can lean peacefully.

  7. That was not that hard. Now all I need to do is more reading and research.
