When people see me on paper, theyâre intimidated. Little do they know, I fake it like the rest of them.
A Masters in Communication, sounds nice, doesnât it? It feels nice, but the feeling isnât enough when youâre entering the workforce. Itâs been five years since I have had to work a normal job. The Navy has held my hand all five years.
The Navy has held my hand and helped me become the person I am. The Navy broke me down and rebuilt brick by brick. That being said, my biggest obstacles and fears are in front of me. There is no backing out now.
An E-3 in the military with a Masters degree, that confused employers on the other side of the phone. How is it that you rank so low but your degree is so high. I donât know how to answer them without just saying âbecause I did not care about advancingâ. That would be a red flag when in all actuality it was true.
After the first few years of being in the Navy, I saw that there was a mixture of budget cuts and downsizing. I said to myself âThis gig isnât forever, so whats next?â I knew that I was a Mom of one at the time, a wife and that a backup plan was my best bet. I went to school, I graduated and I had a backup plan. However, I had no idea if I wanted to do Healthcare Administration for the rest of my life. I honestly did not know what I wanted to do.
I did what any other full-time working Mom, Sailor and Wife does, I went to grad school. I went to grad school meaning, the week after I graduated, I started again. I thought communication sounded good. Why not? I said, everyone communicates. That could have been the ditziest thing that I had said my entire life. However, in that program, I learned something about myself. I learned that I like people and that PR did not sound like such a bad gig. I volunteered some time at the on-base Public Affairs office, and there I found my calling. Years had passed since I knew what I may want to do however, this was different. This was my calling, I was working with the bases Public Affairs Officer and realized that I love his job and I wanted to do this until I was gray and old. My purpose has finally been revealed. This, this was the opposite of what I have been doing for my time in the Military.
Let me be honest, I like serving my country but, it is not what I am meant to do for the rest of my life. After five years, the time has come. I joined the Navy at twenty-one years old. I moved from Texas with nothing other than two suitcases, two eyes full of tears and a gut full of fear. I am returning home with a husband, two kids and a house full of the life we have created. Five years fly fast. Now I understand that song âDonât Blinkâ.
My time in the Navy has made me feel as if I live under a rock. It took me until two weeks ago to figure out what highlighter was and why the kids keep calling each other âbruhâ. You can imagine how I feel as I am trying to build my own âBrandâ. This is hard, I am attempting to step into marketing and PR and I am slowly learning things that others have conquered. Example, âTweet Jackingâ. Did you know that you can Hijack someoneâs tweet, a retweet is and then generate traffic for you? Neither did I. There are so many things that I am learning, I cannot wait to learn more but, that shows you how much of a hermit that I have become.
From Camo to Pencil Skirts,
I havenât dressed in anything other than camo in years. The only thing I have gotten dressed up for is the occasional bar, the occasional dinner date. Iâve never had to dress for corporate America. Â My yoga pants and Camiâs simply wonât cut it anymore. My ankles are weak, my legs look awful, how will I ever make this work.
I walk around my house everyday in heels in hopes of conquering the skill before it is too late. Wait, you canât go to an interview in heels? I asked the representative from the department of labor in my TAPS class. She said you can, but itâs frowned upon.
That is all I needed to hear before I knew that I had to conquer the craft of walking in those torture devices. I told my husband that if I can walk in heels flawlessly by February that I am gifting myself a pair of Louboutin shoes. I think that is a fair prize for such a difficult task. Guess I better start saving now because I believe in myself. Boots to stilettos sounds easy enough but surprise, it is not. I will let you know in February how I fared in this scenario.
It is more than heels and pretty skirts and shirts. It is the life that is in front of me. Macklemore has a song called âGloriusâ, this song says,
I Feel glorious, glorious
Got a chance to start again
I was born for this, born for this
Itâs who I am, how could I forget?
I made it through the darkest part of the night
And now I see the sunrise
Now I feel glorious, glorious
I feel glorious, glorious
This means more than I can explain. My time in the Navy was good sometimes and others could be described as worst than most experience. Some I have told and some I have not. However, the purpose of this is to talk about moving forward not backward, so letâs keep progressing. When I was running and I heard this song. I realized that this is my life. âGot a chance to start againâ, because I do. âI was born for this, born for thisâ because I was, and âI made it through the darkest part of the night, and now I see the sunrise because I did.
This song represents my future. Camo to Corporate, Camis to Pencil Skirts. The world is mine for the taking and I am ready to take it all.
