The Church of the Good Boy
A little something I wrote up for my corgi paladin in our anthro D&D campaign… If this is the kind of thing that works for your game, you have full permission to use, adapt, and share.
“Loyalty, Fidelity, Noms”
St. Canis of Lupis wandered in the wilderness, seeking the path of righteousness, until his nose and his paws led him to a valley by a river. There he beheld a miraculous sign, for a fire blazed within a pit, and did not burn the surrounding land; and from this pit issued forth the smell of roasted meat. Canis desired the meat, but when he saw the flames, he was sore afraid. Then a strange being, tall and upright and without fur save a small ruff around its head and jowls, reached forth into the fire, and was not burned; and the being brought forth meat, and gave it unto Canis; and by this sign Canis knew that he beheld the LORD. And the LORD said unto Canis, “Who’s a good boy, then?”, and fed him, and said, “YOU are,” and Canis believed. And when Canis awoke he found that his fur was dappled and his ears made floppy, as a sign unto all that he was blessed; and he vowed to become worthy of the LORD’s gifts. And Canis was the first DOG, and he strove to be always a good boy, as did his puppies and their puppies after him, yea, even unto the thousandth generation.
One need not be male nor canine to join the Church of the Good Boy. The Church is open to all those who desire to be loved and to be good.
THE ORDERS OF THE GOOD BOYS
The Order of Guides and Gatherers: These believers are called to use their keen senses in the service of those who wander in perilous places. Our hooved brethren often welcome the guidance and protection of this Order. [Druids, Paladins] [More often working or herding dogs]
The Guarding Order: These believers train as fierce warriors. It is a common misconception that this is where the larger and more intimidating initiates thrive; in fact, although many who enter this Order are exceptionally small, they are known for great bravery in the face of larger opponents. Demons of all shapes and sizes fear the sharp, snapping teeth of the members of this Order. [Warriors, Berserkers] [Occasionally Dobermans, more often terriers, shih tzus, and Chihuahuas]
The Order of Comfort: These believers tend those who are sick and wounded, whether in body or mind. Some may devote their entire lives to supporting and uplifting a single individual. [Clerics] [Frequently retrievers]
The Order of the Watch: These believers are constantly alert to all kinds of threat and danger, including demons and devils that may be imperceptible to less astute observers. Initiates of this Order are frequently welcomed into great houses and royal courts, as their keen instincts can alert them to the presence of untrustworthy persons. [Rangers] [All types of dog]
The Order of St. Brent: These believers are known for stealth and cleverness. Many have been rehabilitated from life on the streets. Recognized as incredibly useful recruits to the Order, they sometimes aid in the edification of others by teaching them, for example, to watch what they leave on the kitchen counter. [Rogues] [All types of dog]
The Order of Mysteries: Still trying to make fetch happen. It’s not going to happen. These initiates may not be able to solve the great mystery of the Unthrown Ball, but they have learned to make many other interesting things happen along the way. [Sorcerers, Wizards] [All types of dog]
The Order of the Howl: They’re… special. [Bards] [Very frequently huskies, Basenjis, or beagles]
Training of initiates in the Church of the Good Boy can be long and arduous, including Acts of Service, Acts of Obedience, and Acts of Humility (sometimes referred to by the vulgar as the “Sit, Stay, Roll Over” pedagogy). The rigorous program often enables the initiates to complete remarkable feats of strength, agility, intelligence, memorization, and endurance. As a final test, some initiates call upon all of their training and spend a night sitting vigil in the temple yard with (at the head priest’s discretion) either a plate of snacks they can’t reach, or a ball and no one to throw it. Those who survive this greatest of ordeals with their minds intact are eligible to become become paladins of the Order.
