âResearching is fun, so I donât know how to answer your question. Itâs important to me, and I think it could have an impact. And I want to. Donât you want things that are difficult to get?â This was remarkably painful to talk about, but most of her existence was filled with a great deal of pain, it seemed. She could deal with a little wistfulness and conflicted feelings. It never got easy. âI wouldnât be able to go into the sun like for a nice adventure, but it wouldnât be the worst if someone opened a window when I was nearby. I got some exposure once- a while ago. Iâd recently fed, which is the only reason why I survived, but⌠itâs worth it for my peace of mind to be careful. What would you do if you were in my position?â
ResearchingâŚfun?  Atticus didnât know how to respond to that.  And he didnât exactly like her tone, even though, if he was being honest with himself, no, he didnât.  Things that were hard to get, which, in his position, wasnât a lot of thingsâwerenât exactly worth it in his mind.  Yet he didnât have anything to prove to Lark, and so he decided to admit as much.  âI donât think Iâve wanted anything that was very difficult to get,â he shifted in his seat to a more formal position.  âThe researchâyouâd probably have to find a smarter person to help you with that.  But obtaining the books you wantâŚthat I can help with.â  Atticus could imagine it was more difficult for Lark to talk about her past and her difficulties with vampire things, and so he said nothing in reply to her.  But he was more surprised at the last question directed towards him.  âI suppose I donât know,â he answered quietly.  âI probably wouldnât be as restrained as you are.  Itâs always been hard for me to hold myself back.â
