The awards were just announced, and After.Life came in last. As a result, both Annissa Zadani and Eila Levitt got docked 30 points. Now, theyâre getting drunk and rambling about the whole thing.
Players
Eila Levitt, Annissa Zadani @atozadani
Thirty points. Eila Levitt had kept close watch at her points. She had gone through the trouble of tolerating the PR teamâs grand ideas for the press tour, only for it to produce very little in terms of points increases (if at all). Then, after the film premiered, Eila dropped thirty points.
Eilaâs not sure if she should curse out Miguel Cardosa for his shit writing or if she should kick herself for not seeing this coming, as all of the good rewrite suggestions had gotten rejected in the end. Part of her wished she had jumped ship when she had the chance, like Amir Hassan did. That guy nearly went down to 1 point for the role, gained his points back, and then ditched this for a better project.
âThis is what you get when men like him write scripts, I guess,â Eila mused. âShame on me for not choosing a better screenwriter. Or director. Whatever.â
"I fucking hate this town," Annissa announced as she popped the top on another bottle of soda water. "We did not work our asses off to be disrespected like this."
In truth, part of Annissa was panicking. Failing here wasn't the plan. If she never made it to the top, never beat out people like Eloise Bardot, then everything would have been for nothing. The very thought was driving Annissa crazy.
"Really, who the fuck voted for Hairspray? What was so groundbreaking about a musical that's been around for decades and already has a fucking adaptation?" Annissa slid Eila another vodka and soda, and then started on her own. "Miguel is an incompetent sack of shit, but at least he was doing something new."

---âYouâve got that look in your eye again,â Ginny said. She wasnât supposed to be back here, not this time, but there was not a backstage on Broadway that Virginia Galkin couldnât worm her way into. âBette told me to tackle you if you try to pull a runner.â
Annissa laughed weakly, eyes darting away from Ginnyâs gentle smile and back out to the crowd. There are so many of them that Annissa could feel her stomach churn. It wasnât her first show, not by a decade, but it was the biggest one. Her only title role, after years of villains and step-sisters and plucky best friends.
She wasnât meant for this, a voice echoed in her head. This was someone elseâs role, and Annissa had stolen it from them. Annissaâs hands tightened their grip on the curtain.
"Why did I think I could do this?" Annissa muttered. She wished she could press into Ginny's side and hide from the world in a curtain of blonde hair, but she'd already been in makeup for hours. Annissa was black and purple all over, arching raven's wings off her back, feathers in her hair. Ginny had to stand a couple feet away just to avoid messing with the wild hairstyle they'd given her.
That didn't stop Ginny from reaching out, putting a hand on Annissa's waist. Annissa could feel the warmth of her hand through the thin fabric of her dress, and that finally drew her gaze away from the crowd.
"That's fucking stupid," Ginny said, quietly. Her smile had faded, leaving behind that serious frown that always made Annissa want to squirm away from her gaze. She hated how intense Ginny's eyes got when she was serious; It made Annissa feel like prey. "Maybe I could understand it if you were saying this when you first got cast, but holy shit, Nis-- You've been doing it."
"Not in front of people," Annissa hissed. Ginny rolled her eye.
"I'm in love with an idiot." Ginny pinched at Annissa's side, grinning a little when Annissa cursed at her in French. "Listen: You have run this show so many times you could do it in your sleep. You breathed these lines. You re-choreagraphed most of your own solos. Nis, you always fucking do this, and every time I have to remind you that you have this."
"It's different this time, Gin!" Annissa can't fidget so well in this costume, and her toe shoes keep her feet locked in. There's no where to hide, really, and all the anxiety pours out in her voice, instead. "I'm the lead. I'm not like you, I don't--"
"You're right," Ginny said. "You're not like me. You work twice as hard and, somehow, you smile right through it. I have no fucking idea how you do so much when you're underpaid and more talented than the ingenue they keep pushing you behind--"
"I wouldn't exactly call you an ingenue," Annissa whispered.
"Oh my god, shut up, I'm trying to compliment you."
They grinned at each other in the dark until Ginny leaned forward to kiss Annissa softly. That was still new, the softer, romantic parts, and Annissa's hart thudded painfully in her chest. When Ginny pulled back, Annissa could just make out how she'd stained Ginny's lips a faint purple.
"What I'm trying to say is that you're a fucking rockstar, and you've given this play more of your life than I've ever given anything. And you know what? Even if it does suck, it doesn't matter. Even if you never play anything but wicked step-sisters ever again--" Annissa groaned. "--you will always be my leading lady."
sheâd grimaced when she first signed up for the event. dares. as if risking their lives wasnât enough for the day to day operations of prometheus, the contracts were now being asked to dance for a live studio audience. she couldnât have been more opposed to the idea, but sheâd put her name down regardless, filled out the proper paper work. it had come down to the idea of her being in a given room, able to help whoever she had with her. better her than someone who would be against the contracts in the room.
she couldnât help the relief on her chest that they would be eased into it at the very least. if someone wanted to shave their head willingly, she wasnât going to step in. play a sympathetic card too quick and she could get pulled. âiâm all for a razor.â she let a flicker of a smile pass over her face, finally on the same page as those she was with, strangers though they were. let it be quick and easy, let them do what they wanted and get out. she looked around the little stage, waiting for one to magically appear. or whatever the hell they were going to do to get props in and out. âyou donât happen to see one do you?â
he knew that there were things hidden around the room, some of them likely to help with their dares ( at least, thatâs how it had seemed to work on audreyâs stream ). letting out a heavy breath as if to say âhere we goâ, angel walked down the asiles of seats towards the one with the nearest body in it. he scooted in through the chairs, tilting his head as he realized what he was actually looking at. âitâs.. a dummy?â he got nearer, letting out a sound of displeasure at the creepy semi-realistic face it wore before reaching a hand into the pockets of its clothes. he pulled out a seemingly random items. âi found a taser? i guess we should hold onto that one..â though he really hopes they donât end up having to use it.Â
he finishes searching through the dummyâs clothes, not finding anything else that seems useful at the moment. âthink thereâs anything behind the screen?â as he asked, angel turned his gaze towards it, only to see that it was now showing the point value of the dare. ânissa youâre really gonna shave your head for 100 points?â didnât seem worth itâbut maybe sheâd end up having the right idea. take on all the stupid shit so she could avoid anything that turned out to be.. a little too extreme.Â
Annissa took another aisle, searching through the dummies. For a few, the pockets were empty, and Annissa tried not to frown. The more time they spent looked for this razor, the more time Prometheus had to get bored. And they couldn't let that happen; If Prometheus got bored, that's when the big guns came out.
Luckily, Angel took the lead, commenting on the dare. Annissa looked up at him with a grin. "Why not? You do it for free," she teased. "Besides, it doesn't really matter. I wasn't joking when I said I fried my hair bleaching it. The texture is gone. That's why I cut it. It's just hair, and I'm sure Prometheus can afford the good wigs."
"Aha!" Annissa said, after sticking her hand into one more pocket. She pulled out a knife, and immediately started dividing off a section of her hair. "Not a razor, but you're supposed to cut off all the length before you shave, right?" Annissa sawed off the section of her hair, grinning as she let her bleach blonde hair float to the ground. Her hands moved to gather another section, and Annissa turned to the redhead. "You don't think I'm crazy, do you?"
tell me where it hurts, they say
tell me where it hurts
as if it is
as simple as a broken bone
as easy as a hidden scratch
as if this is the kind of hurt
that can be fixed
with a few doctorsâ visits
as if i could point
and say
here,
here is where it hurts
and they could
wipe it clean of infections andÂ
wrap it up in bandages and
watch it until it heals like new again
if i knew where it hurts,
if i knew how to make it stop
donât you think
i would have done it by now?

we are each half of something greater,
as the legends say.
Â
we are both carved in lockstep pieces.
and when the bones of our fingers tangle like jigsaw puzzles
i swear upon the sun and the moon and everything bright in the sky
that all my jagged lines could find home between yours,
and all your frayed edges could find comfort next to mine.
Â
itâs a pity, my beloved half,Â
that greater does not always mean better,
   or even good.
Â
itâs a pity, my beloved half,
that two halves donât always make a whole
and two puzzles pieces donât always fit in one picture
and two hearts that beat together donât always cease together.Â
Â
itâs such a pity, my beloved half,Â
sometimes two halves can make a whole heartÂ
                                 a whole story
but sometimes, my beloved,Â
sometimes, two halves do not come together so much as collide
and all the spaces between them go up in flames like a volcano
like a burning star exploding into supernova:
merciless. brilliant. blinding. deadly.Â
Â
and what, the legends ask, is left in the aftermath?
why, my beloved half,Â
we picked up the shattered pieces of it allâ
of you, of me, of the world we burned in the spaces between usâ
we cradled their serrated edges in the nest of our joined hands
we anointed them in the bloody rivers in the creases of our palms.
Â
oh, and we kissed those broken-glass pieces,Â
   and we called it love.
oh, and we swallowed those broken-glass pieces
   and we called it remembrance.Â
oh, and we whispered with broken-glass voices,
   and we called it holy.
Â
and one day, my beloved half,
they will bury the broken-glass piecesâ
of you, of me, of the world we held in the spaces between usâ
and they will call it history.
heâd only watched one stream from the earlier groups, and that had been more than enough. though they werenât together and would never be, angel had to know that audrey was going to make it out of this alive for their daughters. and she hadânot much worse for wear. the other actress in the room though? sheâd had a fucking heart attack after injecting herself with heroin. suffice to say, angel was nervous. there was some relief to be had once he realized the other contract in the room with him would be annissa zadani, a co-star from after.life. angel liked annissaa, wanted to trust her, but he wasnât sure if he could say anything more than that. as for their sponsorâclaudia? all he knew was that she was a little spitfire, throwing hands at the drop of a hat. that didnât really seem to bode well for them, but it remained to be seen if the woman would take this opportunity to play with the lives in her hands or show them mercy.Â
as they entered the double doors ahead of them, angel had to squint at the brightly lit movie screen. he carefully shuffled forward, realizing they were in a movie theaterâbut.. not quite alone. angel shot an uncertain look back to the two women behind him, unsure what to make of the dozen or so silhouettes he could make out sitting in various seats. âwhat the fuck?â he mouthed, a sudden noise causing him to turn his attention back to the movie screen. it was beeping? noâsomething else. angel watched the screen change from one number to the next, realizing that it was a countdown.Â

he let out a nervous laugh, again looking behind him. âyou donât think theyâve changed their minds, huh? theyâre just gonna play some embarrassing clips of us tripping over lines or getting caught by the paps?â though he really wanted to believe his own words, he knew better than that. he knew cora better than that.

PLAYER ONE: ANNISSA ZADANI.
PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST DARE.
Annissa wasn't really sure what she had expected, but it wasn't something this high production, honestly. Even in her wildest predictions, Annissa had pegged this particular 'event' to take place in a boring, grey warehouse-- Something that would make it easy to clean the blood out, after. Watching the earlier groups, though, Annissa had quickly realised she could not be more wrong. Not only were the sets realistic and detailed, they were specific-- There were no recycled movie props here. Prometheus had spared no expense.
Which meant they were expecting the Contracts to earn their money back and then some.
However, Annissa was still an actor, and it was easy to smile at Angel's joke, to lean against his shoulder and play along. "God, I'm pretty sure there are videos of my first performance out there-- Nothing they could do to us would be worse than watching that."
They didn't joke for long, however-- Almost as soon as Annissa had time to get antsy, the lights dimmed and words flashed across the screen, her name among them.
She stiffened, glancing at the sponsor out of the corner of her eye. Annissa didn't know her, really; Was she going to delight in whatever torture the screen gave Annissa? Would that make it easier or harder to grin and bear it?
DARE #1: SHAVE YOUR HEAD.
Annissa found herself laughing, almost hysterical with relief. There was nothing she wouldn't do for her mission, but maybe this wouldn't be so bad. She sagged against the wall behind them for a moment, playing up the emotion for the cameras.
"Oh, thank God." Annissa continued laughing as she steadied herself. "I guess someone out there noticed how fried my hair has gotten since I went blonde. Thanks, guys."
She looked toward Claudia. "So, do I get scissors and a razor, or is that part of the challenge?"
âMy solution?â For all of his theorizing about Prometheusâ power, Jerome never had a solution. He has read plenty, and Prometheus praised its own genius in capitalizing on Thomas Edisonâs invention of the kinetograph. Even that raised some questions for Jerome Castillo. The only solution that popped up in response to that, really, was to invent a time machine and prevent that one event in history.Â
âIf you really want to consider this,â Jerome said. âItâs not enough to read Prometheusâ version of history. Do you think reading their PR take on how they had bought the patent from Thomas Edison is enough? Remember, cancellations didnât come around until the 1940s, after movies came with sound. Ask yourself questions. Why, either near the end, or after World War II and all of that death, did the lives of enriched contracts take on an appeal? What process in history allowed for the legalization of televised murder? Consider all of the historical factors before you invent even one martyr for your cause. That is about as much as I can answer.â
"So your grand answer is that you don't have one at all." It could be judgement, in Annissa's voice, especially with those words, but it's not-- In fact, there's almost understanding. So many people who didn't approve of Prometheus didn't have any real answers for the problem. She had been one of those people once, raised in a family of the same. Annissa wasn't keen on being so self-righteous that she demanded that people have a solution to be upset about death, but she just wished they would listen. "There's a difference between activism and philosophy. You are interested in one, and I am interested in the other."
Annissa shook her head. "No, that is exactly the problem. Men like you think about history until you become one with it, and then nothing ever gets done. Would it be interesting to know why a post-war society does what it does? Yes. Would it be helpful? Probably. But it is not necessary. We don't demand the prosecution provide motive when they have witnesses and a smoking gun. Besides, the world has changed. We have parasocial relationships, we have TMZ, we have Twitter. Contracts are, at once, the most humanized and objectified they've ever been." Annisa's foot tapped against the hard floor underneath them, as if for emphasis. "That 'bond' needs to be broken. People need to wake up."
at the drop of her favorite directorâs name, lu couldnât help the question that practically spilled from her lips. âhave you worked with julian before?â after a moment, she was quick to add, âi think heâs put out some really interesting projects.â though she tried to sound professional and not like a schoolgirl quizzing someone about her crush, lu wasnât entirely sure she succeeded.
she shrugged slightly at the possible fate of amir hassan, the questions far above her own paygrade ( and probably angelâs too, despite his connection with cora ). though lu and angel each had⌠intimate relationships with cora, they were hardly granted special permission to knowing the inner workings of prometheus and the like. if anything, cora probably guarded those secrets even more tightly from the two people that lived right under her noseâleast they think they were privileged to some sort of special treatment from her ( ha! ).Â
ânone taken. though i guess iâll start walking on ice around anyone with an accent.â she joked. lu agreed that americans were probably some of the most obnoxious and irritating people on the planetâsheâd been surrounded by them her entire life.Â
the bartender walks by and drops off their jalapeno poppers and onion rings, the smell alone enough to make lu let out a âmmmmâ of pleasure. âgod, iâd trade all the filet mignon and grilled chicken in the world for bar food.â so was the life of an actress, always watching what you ate, what you did, what you wore, what you said. it was exhausting.Â
"No," Annissa said, blinking in surprise at Luda's sudden enthusiasm. She didn't know that she'd ever met anyone who liked Julian. There were people who liked his work, of course, and people like Eve, who hadn't seemed to mind him, but this... Was new. "I have a few friends working on Norah, though. His temper is legendary. ... But I have to admit, he does seem like he knows what he's doing." Annissa knocked her shoulder against Luda's, gently. "Who knows, kiddo, maybe you'll be in the next one."
Annissa took another long pull of her beer. She wished she could just outright say what she was thinking, that anyone who migrated to this country for the fucking film industry probably wasn't a good person, anyway, but-- Well. That would inspire questions. Besides, it wasn't completely true. There were a couple countries where the Cancellation process was even worse.
Only, like, two, but still.
"The French ones, at least," Annissa agreed with a smile.
"Oh, agreed." Annissa echoed Luda's pleased hum as she picked out the most fried to perfection onion ring from the basket. "Whenever I think I miss dancing, I just remember all the things I'm allowed to eat now." She took a bite, smile curling wider at the crunch between her teeth. Eating had been hard, since Annissa had signed on, but good company made it a little easier. "I had a mozzarella stick for the first time in 5 years last week and I almost cried."

Claire usually tried to avoid confrontation that had any emotional basis but this one couldnât be avoided. She actually really liked Annissa and it had ripped at her insides to see the way the other woman had so willingly gotten on her knees in front of a party filled with people. And for Cyrus of all people. Hadnât that man been enough of a pain in the ass in her life already? The writer knocked on the door she knew belonged to Annissa. So what if she was showing up unannounced. She wanted answers for the stupid aching in her chest.Â
Claire was a bright spot in Annissa's otherwise lackluster life. Sure, it probably didn't seem like it from the outside, but the life of a contract was... dull. Annissa seemed to find it that way, anyway. She didn't want the fame, or the money. Her every waking thought was consumed with revenge and manipulation, and when that wasn't absolutely exhausting, it made the days run together.
When Annissa was with Claire, though... That all stopped for a little while. Colour seeped back into the world. Living was fun again. Sure, sometimes Annissa had to focus on smiling a little wider than she could manage, to cover up a bad morning, but faking it made her feel better. It would never be as good as it was with Ginny, and Annissa wasn't looking for that again, but it was... nice.
She answered the door with a smile. "Claire! I wasn't expecting you." Annissa stepped back, damp hair falling over her shoulder. "Come in, come in. Sorry if it's a little hot, I just got out of the shower and it's... not a big apartment," she laughed.
It was clear that her question hadnât been what the actress wanted to hear. And of course Freya knew of Annissa at the very least. âThat I am. Is that a problem for you?â Maybe that was what was throwing off Annissaâs vibes. Freya knew she couldnât actually see auras or whatever the hell else her god mom claimed there was but she was a damn good empath. Enough to fake it anyhow.Â
âThereâs something funny about you. Sad. You know that there are lots of people to help you with that here, right?â Prometheus had plenty of avenues. Doctors, drugs and anything in between. Not that Freya ever had any need for them. She was happy with her life just as it was. Maybe with a lot more points but in time that would come.Â
Yes, dipshit, Annissa's brain said, but Annissa kept her bright smile plastered on. "Of course not," she chirped. "I always thought it rather a shame that none of the people Cora is closest to could really relate to her religion. I'm glad she has someone like you."
Of course, when the woman continues, talking about how sad Annissa seems, it becomes increasingly hard not to roll her eyes. "Yeah, well, that's what happens when someone you love dies. No amount of money just... washes that away." Annissa lets her smile drop but tries to stay polite, at least. "The work helps. I'm very grateful."
Jadeâs eyes swept down Annissa without a drop of shame to her name, mainly down at her underwear to see that they looked nothing like her black lace. Her head tilted as her eyes slipped back up to the fellow actressâ eyes. âToo bad. I was looking forward to searching you, but youâve done my job for me, apparently. So, appreciate this: Iâm half-disappointed it wasnât you. You would have done them justice.â
Annissa leaned against the doorway of the fitting room, letting Jade look her fill-- She knew she looked good. It took a lot of hard work to get that. "Thank you, Miss Bellamy. I think...?" Annissa shrugged. "Do you need help looking? Hold on."
She pulled on her shirt, an over-sized sweater with a hem that fell just past the lines of her underwear. She ignored her pants, still folded neatly in the corner. It was too late to preserve any kind of modesty. "Have you spoken to the saleslady?"
Fabianâs list of what vexes him sprawls out into an endless stream, but in this scenario, the vexation at the top of the list is being improperly greeted. Her eyes on her telephone, and it only instills a quiet hatred for the electronic devices that have tied up everything around them, but Fabian can rant about that another time, probably sooner than later. For now, his pursed lips choose to listen, and the names she list are only half-known. Ms. Alyce-Lane has already been met, and precisely on the matter of a Mr. Cardosa, who he failed to even see working upon his visitation. Mr. Santiago? He is on the list to be seen, but coffee? Fabianâs eyes squint at it. Mr. Bright, another unknown, but he sounds as though Fabian can officially dread it.
âYes, Mr. Deluca,â his voice repeats her very words in confirmation, as it is the director he needs at the moment, and then itâs her that causes him to pause. Immediately, itâs her continuation that creates the stop. She enjoys anotherâs suffering? She might as well be a harpy. But thatâs not what prolongs the momentary silence. Itâs her eyes, her mouth, her tone finally smacking him in the face with realization.
âĂponine.â The name falls out, and immediately his mind jumps to catch it. His throat clears as if it was a mistaken cough, straightening himself. âForgive me for changing the subject so rapidly,â he goes on, âbut have you, by chance, had the pleasure of acting in theatre? If so, I believe I may have seen one of your performances.â Or two. Or three.
Annissa's smile turns positively lupine. "In that case, it would be my pleasure to assist you, Mr. Bishop." It's not that Annissa likes hurting the crew members-- In fact, she likes them far more than she likes most of the contracts in Hollywood. Deluca, though, that man was a real piece of work. Oh, he hid it better than most, but Annissa could tell from the way his eyes followed the women he worked with that he was no better than Cyrus. Deluca didn't have Cyrus's wicked cleverness to make up for it, either.
Hearing Eponine's name throws her off her vindictive streak, however. Annissa's eyes, large and shocked, fly to Fabian's. It takes a moment for her to realize that he's referring to her. Another smile curves across her face, this one softer. Sweeter.
"Yes," Annissa says, "I come from an old theatre family--" She offers her hand for a proper handshake. "My name is Annissa Zadani. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Did you also move from New York recently?"
Of all the people for Carrie to select as her Cuddle Victim â which usually meant she wouldnât leave them alone until sheâd at least got some belly scritches â Juno had hardly expected Annissa Zadani. Heâd never formally met her; heard of her, certainly, and seen plenty of videos of her Broadway past (He totally didnât fanboy over her performance as Eponine. Totally.), but coming face-to-face with her was a completely different matter. And apparently, she liked cats.
âShe is, isnât she?â He leant down and scratched Carrieâs head, trying to entice her back. It never worked until sheâd had her fill of cuddles. âUhâ Juno,â he said, by way of introduction. Not a great first impression, but there could definitely be worse. At least Carrie was there to make him look slightly less of a mess. âJuno Benson. Iâm guessing you like cats?â
Annissa wondered how odd they must look to outsiders, two figures crouched on the sidewalk over a cat. But then, who didn't stop to pet a cat when presented with the opportunity? Monsters, Annissa decided, people like Olivier and Samson.
"I do," Annissa replied with a small smile. "They are very dignified creatures. Don't you think so, Mr. Benson?" She scratched Carrie under the chin, grinning in triumphant when Carrie tilted her head to give Annissa more access. "I would very much like to live with one, someday. Have you lived with her for very long?"

(ďžâăŽâ)ďž*:シďžâ§ Aslee, first I fell in love with Annissa. Then I fell in love with Derek. And of course, Cayla and Anthony were quick to follow. I love how sweet and kind your characters are (minus Cayla when sheâs being a brat), I would genuinely feel hurt if any of them died. Stop trying to kill Annissa!! You write your characters in such a human, realistic way, sometimes Iâm like--when did I pick up a best-selling novel? I thought I was just reading some strangerâs rp threads on tumblr???
I donât even know how to respond to this because Iâm bad at compliments. Uh. I will never stop trying to kill Annissa.
