I recently visited the Studio of the visionary painter, sculptor and designer Joan Miró in Cala Major on the beautiful island Majorca. Actually it is a whole aggregation of studio spaces. In 1956 Miró bought an old country house and used it as a workshop for his sculptures. He also commissioned a friend - architect Josep Lluís Sert - to design and build a new studio building where he could focus on his paintings. Sert created a poetic and functional space in which Miró could bring his artistic process to a climax. Miró had already expressed the idea of a large workshop in 1938 in the autobiographical text "I dream of a large studio" in the magazine Le XXe Siècle: "[...] my dream, when I can really settle down somewhere, is to have a large workshop, not so much because of the lighting, [...] but to have space for many canvases, because the more I work, the more I want to work. " I wandered the areal in awe and jealousy. The painting studio and the sculpture studio are connected by a path uphill through a beautiful Mediterranean garden from which you can also see the sea. In the country house Miró used each wall as his sketchbook. Filling the space with large drawings that where the starting point for his sculptures. Close by there is also a museum showing his artworks and a sculpture garden. I highly recommend a visit. I felt a huge inspiration by this beautiful place and the great artworks of Joan Miró. Mallorca vacation (pt 2) 🇩🇪 In Spanien sind die Corona-Auflagen viel strenger als in Deutschland. Man muss jederzeit in der Öffentlichkeit eine Maske tragen. Nur im Restaurant am Platz und am Strand darf man sie ablegen. Wir haben uns davon aber nicht stören lassen. Wir haben es genossen, dass wir in Restaurants gehen konnten, für die man normalerweise immer eine Reservierung braucht. Auch in Souvenirläden waren wir oft die einzigen. Natürlich ist dies für die Wirtschaft der Insel nicht gut. Das Städtchen „Palma Nova“ fühlte sich wie eine Geisterstadt an. Dazu später vielleicht mehr. Wir waren zwei mal dort. Ich empfand es als erholsam. . 🇺🇸 In Spain, the Corona requirements are much stricter than in Germany. You have to wear a mask in public at all times. You can only take them off in the restaurant on the square and on the beach. But we didn't let that bother us. We enjoyed being able to go to restaurants that normally always require reservations. We were also often the only ones in souvenir shops. Of course, this is not good for the island's economy. The town of “Palma Nova” felt like a ghost town. Maybe more on that later. We were there twice.
