The First Pop-Up Comic Book

On July 23, 1996—Dark Horse Comics published Battle of the Bounty Hunters, one of the most unusual Star Wars comics ever created.

Rather than a traditional comic book, Battle of the Bounty Hunters was a 12-page, fully illustrated pop-up comic written by Ryder Windham, with painted artwork by Christopher Moeller and inks by P. Craig Russell.

The story takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Boba Fett is transporting Han Solo—still frozen in carbonite—to Jabba the Hutt when the assassin droid IG-88D attempts to steal Fett’s valuable prisoner and claim the bounty for himself.

This confrontation was part of the larger Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire storyline, the ambitious 1996 multimedia event that told the story between Episodes V and VI through a novel, comics, video games, toys, trading cards and other merchandise—essentially creating the excitement of a major Star Wars movie release without an actual movie.

Collector’s Fact: Because this comic contains movable pop-up elements, complete copies without torn tabs, flattened scenes or damaged mechanisms can be especially appealing to collectors. It is a wonderfully strange piece of Shadows of the Empire memorabilia and a reminder of how experimental Star Wars publishing became during the franchise’s 1990s revival.
