I caught a spell of nostalgia tonight, and dove into old George Michael records.

WTF happened to George Michael?

His body of work from 1987-1990 is nothing short of a devastating stab into the innermost passion of the contemporary songwriter...

Titles like “Freedom 90,” “One More Try,” “Praying For Time,” and “Father Figure,” avail themselves to watershed moments of Gay Literature, with over-arching insights into Regan-era homophobia, and male sexuality extending as far back as ancient Greek romanticism.

Not to mention how the collision of MTV and “I Want Your Sex” paved the way for our current intersections of media and sexuality.

The song “Dadlands” I recently completed- though people have said “Kurt Cobain” (correctly, I admit) while hearing it- it’s really “Father Figure” territory I’m diving into.

I was only seven years old when “Father Figure” came out. But even then, I was acutely aware, there were no female figures mentioned at all in that song. Though one may be tempted to find it, there is zero hetero-sexuality in that song. I felt like I could decrypt its message, even at a pre-pubescent age.

The poetry in his loneliness and curiosity rode an edge that sheered off like a cliff after the release of 1990′s Listen Without Prejudice vol 1. In the absence of a Volume 2, it just always felt nothing could ever match the palatal depth of the sound of his star escaping our orbit:

Found that this had replaced the drummer's stool when I walked into the studio today- a Harley seat mounted on a Medieval doctor's stool topped by a bejeweled heart on a pink plaid pillow.
