Morwen of Dor—lómin
“Since you are my son and the days are grim I will not speak softly to you…”
latest completed commission, featuring Morwen shortly after her arrival in Doriath. a quick shoutout to @outofangband, for their posts on Morwen have had me rotating her in my brain forever and overall very much helped create an image of her that I really drew on for this, especially this post which I really loved, about her general dismissiveness of the elves, most specifically and delightedly, taking a ‘lol lmao’ attitude to Fingon and Turgon themselves.

hi! I love your art, everything about it is gorgeous. I've got a few of your prints actually. I was wondering if for pride you could do Frodo Baggins with the aroace flag? Or Sam and Frodo with the queerplatonic flag.
If you do Frodo, could you use one of these flags? The shades speak to me. Thank you so much!
I´m glad you like my art so much <3 ^^ - those muted colours speak to me too
I had so much fun redesigning him - I gave him a mix between Fallohides and Harfoots clothes - my reference post for Hobbit fashion

some messy celebrimbor sketches (ft. flower crowns with baby celebrían)
No but it always kills me how CURUFIN is the one who had Angrist all along and that he did fuck all with it until Beren and Luthien took it from him. The one knife strong enough to pry a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown.
And Celegorm had Huan!! These two Feanorian brothers specifically had all they needed to at least make an attempt at retrieving the Silmarils and it never really occurred them to TRY.

Thus ended Beleg Strongbow, truest of friends, greatest in skill of all that harboured in the woods of Beleriand in the Elder Days, at the hand of him whom he most loved; and that grief was graven on the face of Túrin and never faded. But courage and strength were renewed in the Elf of Nargothrond, and departing from Taur-nu-Fuin he led Túrin far away. Never once as they wandered together on long and grievous paths did Túrin speak, and he walked as one without wish or purpose, while the year waned and winter drew on over the northern lands. But Gwindor was ever beside him to guard him and guide him; and thus they passed westward over Sirion and came at length to Eithel Ivrin, the springs whence Narog rose beneath the Mountains of Shadow. There Gwindor spoke to Túrin, saying: ‘Awake, Túrin son of Húrin Thalion! On Ivrin’s lake is endless laughter. She is fed from crystal fountains unfailing, and guarded from defilement by Ulmo, Lord of Waters, who wrought her beauty in ancient days.’ Then Túrin knelt and drank from that water; and suddenly he cast himself down, and his tears were unloosed at last, and he was healed of his madness.
I love this passage. It's written so many years ago in a world with specific standards about what male strength is, about how men should carry themselves and express emotion etc. And yet the 'madness' that Tolkien attributes to Turin does not come down to being emotional/fragile/consumed by feelings and grief. It's about suppressing emotions and about how emotional wounds can fester. The moment in which he breaks down and cries his little heart out feels so cathartic every single time.
Fingon the valiant ⚔️⚔️💙💛💙⚔️⚔️
I’m a big fan of reenactment archaeology. I think there’s a lot to be said for recreating a scenario to better understand decisions made in generations past. Usually there’s an inherent logic to them.
Which is to say, that now that I have a baby of my own, I understand so much better the common cultural practice in which unmarried women wear their hair loose and uncovered, while married women have their hair covered and/or bound back.
I doubt it was just for modesty, oh no. No, my friends, I see now that the reason for this common practice of mothers binding back their hair is because there is nothing, I mean nothing, a baby love more than YANKING EVERY STRAND OF HAIR THAT COMES WITHIN GRABBING DISTANCE OF THEIR STICKY, SWEATY, AND IMPOSSIBLY STRONG LITTLE HANDS.
#Babies have one goal#And that goal is rip something off your face#Glasses#Hair#Earrings#A necklace if they can't find anything better#Your ears#Nose#Lips#They want it for their own - @fuck-handed-fish

Ok so Fingon giving Dor-Lomin to Hador is often cited as being a sign that he’s not interested in political power and governance but now that I think about it, I think it’s the opposite. Giving the fierce and warlike Edain a fief serves to make them vassals and cements their role as valuable assets in the war effort—something that Fingolfin and Fingon very much need after Turgon took one whole third of their people. So he’s not giving up power, if anything he is gaining power. I do not think he was like “here’s my fief, I’m done with it” instead I think he was like “here, human, I am very generously gifting you my, yes, mine own fief.” Thus making Hador beholden to him. Which I think is a recurring part of the Fingon playbook, since his rescuing Maedhros did kinda make it where Maedhros and brothers “owed” Fingon for Nelyo’s life and thus they would be unlikely to challenge Fingolfin’s overlordship.
And this exchange in Dor-Lomin is happening at the same time that Fingolfin is planning his unpopular assault on Angband. We know that only Angrod and Aegnor supported him, and this implies that Fingon inexplicably did not. So I think Fingon would have wanted to get back to Barad Eithel and participate in those war councils and endeavor to sway his father towards his own counsels. Which we know he has done before given how hard he pushed Fingolfin to go into exile. I do not think he does this to challenge his father at all, more that Fingon knows that centralizing Fingolfin’s power advances his own position, and all of these things he is doing are supposed to be beneficial for them both.
Maedhros got some of Nerdanel's character traits, but incidentally not the ones that would make him a 'good' person -- patience and stubbornness, yes, but in addition to Fëanor's pride, commitment to sunk cost fallacies and willingness to live by political rhetoric and manipulation. Arguably this makes him more dangerous rather than less.
