i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3

unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it

i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map

i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs

this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.

crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.

This defeats the entire purpose of the term "CSAM" (child sexual abuse material) which is that it's material of a child being sexually abused. The term was coined by anti-CSAM advocates because this material was being called "child porn," and it's not "porn." "Porn" generally refers to fiction, and CSAM is not fiction. It's real footage of real children being really abused.

"CSAM" is to "child abuse" as "snuff film" is to "murder." It is real filmed violence against a real human person. Games/drawings/fiction depiction child abuse as a plot point in a work of fiction are to child abuse as, e.g., murder mysteries are to murder. It's a fictional story in a fictional medium. No real human people are harmed in its production. You can argue -- and many people do -- about whether the fictional depiction "sends a bad message" or whatever, but it is not, literally, a snuff film or CSAM.

The usage of the term CSAM to refer to fiction is especially jarring to me given the recent D4VD case. Many people have tried to make it seem like he murdered that girl cause he was into dark fiction or wrote about dark topics......which takes away his agency and the fact that many people in his discord KNEW or at least suspected his involvement with a minor and covered it up.

We are well aware that predators have been using many, many excuses so they are not held responsible for their actions and crimes. D4VD case is maybe the most recent but it won’t be the last. We’ve seen so many of them claiming they aren’t mentally well, claiming they were under influence, claiming a thousand things so they aren’t thrown in jail for a lifetime. And sometimes it works. So they walk and they commit the crime again and again because they know they can get away with it.

So many times men have claimed they did not rape their kid, wife, neighbor, anyone — it was the devil, you see. They are good men, god fearing men, the devil acted through them. And these cases are somehow sometimes accepted in small communities and the victims are to blame. Because they tempted them, because they dressed in a certain way, because they were born like that.

When you say someone is a criminal because they create fiction with dark subjects, you are relativizing not only the crime, you are doing the same to the victims and their trauma.

No rapist is born because they once consumed a piece of fiction depicting rape. No pedophile assaulted a child because they read a piece depicting it in fiction. No murderer became a serial killer because they watched a movie depicting killing others.

Criminals commit heinous crimes because they are criminals. They commit crimes because they are predators that are enabled by people around them. They get away with it because the system is fucked and people overlook so many things and some people BELIEVE their half assed excuses, religious or not, to why they committed such barbaric shit.

There can be many psychological, societal, mental matters we are not discussing here, but none of them are born from ANYONE consuming dark media. Ever.

If you think a fanfic author writing about fictional media involving dark themes, an artist drawing two fictional characters in a dark scenario is the same thing as a predator/murderer/criminal/rapist, congratulations, you are dismissing a real person's experience, a victim's trauma, and everyone that has ever been through real hell in the hands and deeds of criminals.

Because this is what it is, you are comparing a real life child that has been through countless harmful cycles of abuse and will bear this trauma forever to a pixel, a non-real, a fictional character being put in situations. It's uncomfortable when put this way, it's on purpose, to see if some of you grow some fucking shame and stop talking shit.
