Astray is a comic based on my clangen file, where I'll be playing 1 full year (12 moons) ahead and then drawing out the events that happen to my little kitties. I'll change around the order of events and adding bits and lore as we go, and I do meddle with game files as I want 'cos I want to tell a satisfying and fun story.
This is based on the vanilla clangen game with the mechanics, set roles and naming conventions within the game, but Astray will not be a typical warriors setting.
General Content warnings include:
Death, Animal death, Violence, Injury, Blood, Torture, Abuse, Drama, Swearing/Language, Car accidents etc. Let me know If I missed anything!

I'm Clovey, any pronouns are fine though she/her is my default, based in the Uk and 25+, and have been trying to start a clangen comic for a while and this is the first to get past moon 1 so I'm committing now :)
Pages will drop weekly probably. I'm working full time so if I run out of pages, bear with me and let me know you're interested in more! <3

With Moon 25 FINALLY on the horizon, and with things settling back into a normal pace, I can finally celebrate this blog reaching 1000 Followers! I know it's been very up and down lately, but I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for keeping up with TidalClan. I promise there is more to come as I get more and more satisfied with the style I want the comic to be in! I want to deliver something you all can enjoy and get attached to!
In celebration, two upcoming cats (one that will be seen right away in Moon 25) have the chance to be designed by YOU! But if you're not interested, please reblog this post so it can interest other artists out there!
Guidelines and Contest Rules Below!
For this contest, you will be able to design TWO cats in TidalClan's world! You do not have to do both of course, all up to you! The information provided to you will be their names, their in-game sprite and some very basic personality. If you would like to add anything extra that's in line with their provided personality, go right ahead! I love seeing other's ideas!
First up is:
Condorstar! Yes! A leader!
Condorstar is a long-furred, white tom with brown rosette markings splotched on his flank, and a spot of brown on his right cheek, and yellow eyes.
Secondly we have:
Puddlesand!
Puddlesand is an elderly gray point calico tabby she-cat with deep blue eyes. (She's actually described as "gray/ginger point calico tabby", though her sprite has no ginger! Buuuuuuuuuut if you want to add ginger to her design, go for it!).
Rules:
- Submissions must be your own original works. Any suspicion of AI usage will result in an immediate disqualification. No base recolors, no sources outside drawing software.
- By submitting, you agree that the design, if chosen, belongs to me and will be used in the comic.
- As such, anything that happens to the character is a result of the ClanGen RNG or plot relevance. If they die, they are gone with no questions.
- Colored, Fullbody sketches are the most preferred.
- You do not need to be a follower to enter! Everyone will have equal chance of winning, as every submission will be placed into a wheel.
- That said, ONLY ONE SUBMISSION PER PERSON. While you may draw both, I will not be choosing both designs for Condor and Puddle from the same person. There *should* be two winners, unless the wheel decides otherwise.
- Please use the tag #TidalClanContest and @ me in your submission :3
The winning designs will be chosen on July 21th at 8pm EST. The winning designers will receive a huge shoutout PLUS a shaded fully-body character of their choice drawn by yours truly ^^
If there's no submissions, well, uh... ok then.
We had 48 people submit quilt blocks for our pride quilt for this month's event and we've created an awesome spread representing the clangen creator community's pride. As usual if you have a question about who drew a particular square we can probably identify them for ya :3
StarClan split the velvet curtain of the sky, and the ensuing light shattered the world.Â
Fire burned despite the downpour of water from the heavens. The Two-Legs vessel was cast in all directions to be shredded by the gnashing teeth of the ocean. Into the hungry foam, Heronpaw fell.
Lavenderstar had told her that StarClan would return for everyone one day, be it in their dreams or through the hooked claw of another cat. It was a good thing, to be reunited with your loved ones. Heronpaw was so young, she could not imagine this happening to her quite yet.
Striking the churning water, she thought of Lavenderstar, she thought of her brother and sister in Starclan.
Were they scared, too?
Heronpaw was not allowed the luxury of fear for more than a breath. Adrenaline jolted through her and her paws scrambled for purchase in the murky darkness. She was suspended in the void of the sea, weightless and sinking all at once. Above her, the sickly pallor of the full moon, and beneath her, glimmering StarClan.
She felt their paws grazing hers. She could hear her name, spoken so far away and so warbled that it could have been a dream.
Heronpaw wanted it to be a dream. Yet, dreams did not involve drowning kits, and there was one entering the tide but a whiskers distance away from her.
Longkit.
She knew little of him, as he was less than a moon old and far too young to ever interact with, yet he was sinking like a leaden weight. The sunny orange of his fur was the only thing she had noticed, so jarring a sight against the void. Heronpaw cycled her paws in a frenzy, breaching the waterâs surface.
She sucked in frigid air that stung her lungs, but did not linger. Heronpaw descended back into the depths, snatching Longkit in her jaws. He did not fight back. Distantly, Heronpaw thought that he was so small and warm compared to the ocean.
Heronpaw resurfaced a second time, sputtering pathetically for air through her nose as she gripped Longkit by his scruff. Only when Heronpaw dug her claws into the safety of driftwood did the kit react, mewling pathetically. Heronpaw collapsed beside him on their makeshift raft, fur flattened with salt water.
âItâs okay,â She repeated as a desperate litany, to either herself or the kit. âItâs okay, weâre okay, weâre okay.â
Heronpaw pulled Longkit ever closer to her, shutting her eyes to drown out the sound of Starclanâs claws tracing along the underside of the driftwood.
Still getting used to the new tablet and what better way then a little designing? :3 and how could I resist making an entry to @our-clangen 's design contest!!
I adore this comic and admire this creator so much!! They've made such an enthralling story and cast, the number of pages (and backlog) they've produced makes me want to kick my butt into gear haha
More on Jasmineflame's powers under the readmore!!
I chose to design Jasmineflame, since they were really pretty and the other two designs seemed to have an impressive pool of gorgeous designs already. I tried to keep her design as simple as the other Our-clan cats with a basic pastel gradient.
Jasmineflame's power is the ability to heat up her fur, or 'fire fur' for short! It's relatively simple and no apparent change in appearance which I figured worked well for a background character, but allows for a lot of cunning use to fit her personality.
Heating up her fur can do lots of things
Most obviously cause burns to opponents in battle or prey, or burn and scorch her environment to leave marks for others to follow or drawing pictures for her storytelling
Create light for when in dark environments, at night, or to dazzle prey and opponents with a rapid and bright burn of her fur
Be a warm campfire when it gets cold! Her clanmates will love to cuddle up to her in winter, or she can melt away snow and ice.
Jasmine flowers apparently symbolise love, platonic and romantically, so I thought it'd be cute if she subconsciously began to burn when flustered or blushing, making her cheeks glow white.
The opportunities for fun little quicks are endless but can be picked and chosen depending on what fits the story and what would be too strong for the plot. I figured there's already a fire-breather in the clan, so making someone who can create heat but only with her fur (not eyes, claws, etc) would make a fun limit, while focusing more on other aspects of flames like their ability to light up a room.

Hey friends! Just a small update, but since the beginning of december my Tablet was super super dead so I couldn't get much progress done even when I had time to work on pages.
But that's finally changed!! I now have my new tablet set up and I'm so excited to get drawing again đĽ°
I still want to build up a small backlog before I start posting pages again, and I do intend to respond to any asks I've recieved in the meantime, but this is just an excited lil update from me! Hopefully with my new set up I'll find working on pages easier, I'll need to experiment a bit. especially since its been a while đ
a tag game huh?? and I got hit by two of the coolest clangen blogs đ guess I can't ignore this!!
Last Song: Preybirds by Rabbitology
I love this song, it's one of my favourite songs to match to my current DnD campaign I'm DMing. I love the beat and their voices, it gives folksy fantasy big time. It's that hunted and travelling on the road vibe, cursed by the world and haunted by your past, chased by death and with many dangerous roads ahead with no right path to take.
Last Book: Reckoning by Michael R. Miller, 4th book in the Songs of Chaos series.
I haven't finished this book since I only pick it up every other lunch time at work, but I love this world the book series is set in. It's a dragon rider book where Dragon riders fight a plague-army threat that rises yearly, set in a fantasy kingdom with all the oppressive systems that are upheld in that sort of power structure. The main character is a cook's apprentice who couldn't stomach how brutal Dragons and Dragon riders are, so he saves a 'defective' egg that hatches into an albino blind dragon. I love Holt Cook's bond to his dragon, it scratches that itch I enjoyed with how to train your dragon, and I love the magic, powers, cool swords and lore this world has. Big reccommend if you love action fantasy stories.
Last Movie: Last new movie I saw was Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein.
What a masterpiece. It was gorgeously crafted, the colours and set pieces are beautiful alone, but the cinematography, the acting and language. I loved watching it with my friends, it hurt so badly because its such a tragedy and you can feel it coming with every scene, but I couldn't look away. Incredible looking Frankenstein, the medical science is so cool, the costume department popped off, and my friend says its very accurate to the book too!
Last TV Show:
New show? I just finished Stranger things season 5 and, well. I was there when Sherlock season 4 was supposed to have a secret final episode too lol, kinda funny how bad something has to be to make fans be in denial that badly. It was the safest most boring finale they could've done, like it wasn't objectively bad or confusing, just boring.
A Tv show worth watching though is The Mighty Nein by the Critical role crew, if you want something new that's incredibly animated, voice acted, paced and more, watch that show inspired by one of the best DnD campaigns you can watch online.
Favorite Color:
I have many favourites and combinations, but to choose a single one? A colour I will always pick out to represent me is Mint Green, I love green in all variations, its the softest easiest colour to pair with most others but mint green itself is so many of my favourite things. It's springy and bright, its foody and a delicious flavour, its light and whimsical and fits pastels and fairy colours, while pairing so nicely as an accent to dark browns and moodier palettes.
Spicy, sweet, or savory:
Unfortunately a sweet fiend to the end. Trying to get better this year though, I'm cutting down soda, drinking more water, and going to look after my teeth better. But I'll never resist a sweet little treat, I need to do more baking this year.
Current obsession: My DnD campaign is what holds my brain in a vice grip when I'm not working or gaming. I'm the DM of a 5e DnD campaign set in my own world known as Frefaldin, and the campaign is called the Six Chains. My party is an ecletic group of adventurers who ended up in the same prison cart (think skyrim opening hehe) before it gets attacked on the road and falls underground. From there, I've guided them on a series of fun little adventures, fighting possessed scarecrows, pulling off a heist at a fancy Gala, and recently freeing a town from an fungal zombie infection caused by a group of necromancers. I've got many ideas and over arching stories for this world, but most of the time I'm laying the train tracks down in front of the group as quick as they're moving on them, since it's just for fun with my friends and I love getting to be their first DnD campaign for many of them.
Last Search: HMmm honestly just looking at nearby restaurant menus. I had a day off from work so my Dad suggested going to eat somewhere nearby - which turned out to be a bad pick because it took half an hour and they never even came to our table to get our drink order, so my Dad said "I'm not waiting hours for food" and we left to the next door pub. Least the food and service was good there!
Looking Forward To: Oh man I am desperate to get my new drawing tablet. I've been radio silent on this account because my screen tablet's been broken and I can't work on pages without it. I placed an order in December with Wacom though and it's been suuuuch a nightmare. They messed up the Customs and it's taken over two weeks for them to get it processed from it being 'returned' to them, and they still haven't sent another out to me. Jokes on me for trying to spend a little more in the hopes of getting a professional service and tablet. Ah well, it'll get here eventually and hopefully work great!
Thanks for tagging me Froggie and Moth!!! I'll always happily ramble and give a few life updates đĽ°â¤ď¸
In terms of who I tag nextâŚ. I TAG YOU who's reading this. Yes you. Unless you've already done this⌠or you know, you're busy teehee.
HERE IT ISSSS!!!This is the backstory to one of the main characters in my comic and the leader of Splinterclan: Whorlstar.Story for if anyth
IT IS HERE!
Shower Day: Whorlstar's story! I spent way too much dang heart and work on this lol hope you all enjoy getting a look into Whorlstar's past and where she came from :)
I am also using this opportunity to shamelessly announce I have started a patreon for Splinterclan. This comic has really made me feel like I could fulfill my dream of doing comics for a living so I guess launching the patreon is my first step towards that! I will be posting pages a week early on there and there's currently some behind-the-scenes art for this animatic, but everything I post there will also be posted here eventually :>
If you have the means, I would really really appreciate the support!

there's so much love put into all the backgrounds, is the setting for astray clan based on a real city? the weather and building layouts and types are so different from where i live.
its really beautiful to see a place i've never been through the eyes of someone who loves it
Awh this ask is so nice, thank you so much for your sweet words đĽ°â¤ď¸I really love that people appreciate the detail I put into the backgrounds, even when I try to minimise the backgrounds to be quicker with pages, they never feel right unless I put enough interesting shapes and detail into them. Explains why I'm so slow to update đ But It means a lot to hear that I've made something so intriguing đĽš
So while the location of the comic is fictional so that I can make up places, move buildings, rivers, etc. as needed for the story - I live in England and that very much influences how I draw and view city life. I think I end up with a very... mundane and 'small' city vibe to my drawings, with a mix of overgrown nature and back alleys, smaller suburban areas with lots of domesticity because we're a small island with a pretty packed population
I've grown up all my life in one city that's retained a lot of nature as its within the 'Green belt', which is a large area of nature that we've purposefully preserved to avoid people building all over it to expand the city/capital. And I live very close to London (which I've explored all over, I go visit it multiple times a year to walk the river Thames, the art galleries and markets there, etc.) and the architecture and vibes are all over the place. You go from areas of green park to completely industrial roads and glass skyscrapers, depending on the age of the area and the buildings or if you're by the river or in the more grand area with the Palace/Parliament buildings. It's a jumble of imagery that I pull from, as well as from the areas I live in that are still very built over but a little more green and out of the city centre.
I'm especially inspired by London's skyline when I draw that view for the characters, with constant cranes building new buildings and strangely shaped buildings that loom above everything else, but also I add smokestacks and factories to add to that gritty hostile vibe that the cat's live through.
London (and England) has lost a lot of its factory and industry but in my mind it's always been a very industrially polluted place because of its history, we had an industrial revolution that basically blackened most of the streets and bricks with soot and smoke. London tries to paint itself as very clean now but it'll always be a grey, cloudy, sooty city to me, that's raining or overcast most of the year. But I love it, it's my home and city.
I guess it's funny to think about like, what particularly stands out to me and what doesn't, but from an outside view it must paint an interesting view of what a 'city' is, especially when added from the perspective of cats.
I do plan to have the characters explore different areas of the city in the story too, up the tallest skyscrapers, near the river and sewers, by the mouth of the river where it joins the sea/docks, and towards the city centres and perhaps even beyond the city at times. I want to make the most of a city-based cat colony, all the challenges and views and differences it'd make to a story like this.
Just need to claw some time back from my schedule so I can get more pages out đđ BUT I thank you so much for being interested enough to ask, I sort've rambled but I hope that gives some insights into why my backgrounds are just so, styled in a way hehe
Many many cutie kitties!!
Decided to do the cats, I didn't know that well or at all.
Very fun to try and translate these designs into my own style, pretty challenging actually
I love how you drew him so much quq My snarly growling lil pigeon, he looks perfectly spikey and mad auGhggh<333
Thank you SO MUCh for drawing him đĽ°đĽ°đĽ°Love his cloudy day background, all of these headshots are so expressive and lively, I love how you did them each so uniquely, pose to expression to background â¤ď¸

âWhy do we have to keep walking?â Harekit whined, trudging after Fogfreckle with his head thrown back for maximum volume. The kit was dragging his paws, creating furrows in the snow. âWeâve walked so much. My paws hurt!â
Moonstarâs paws ached with cold, her pads tough and worn from moons of traveling, but you didnât hear her complaining. Knowing that Harekit was a kitten should have summoned at least a little bit of grace within Moonstar, but she was rather too irritated with the way Harekitâs voice bounced off of the snow-buried rocks around them.
âBecause we have to find a new home,â Fogfreckle explained patiently, as he had been doing with all of Harekitâs questions since the sun had risen. It was just past midday, now. Fogfreckle was walking behind Alpinekit, who was in the lead, while Harekit trailed along at his heels. Moonstar followed behind the lot of them at a more sedate pace a tail-length back.
âWe canât just stop right here, out in the open,â Fogfreckle carried on, âa fox might get you!â With a mighty growl, Fogfreckle spun on his heels and bowled Harekit over with a gentle paw, sending him sprawling into the fresh snow. The kit exploded into giggles. His bubbling laughter ratcheted up as Fogfreckle nosed at his soft belly, tickling him.
Moonstar came up short as she was knocked in the chin by one of Harekitâs flailing paws. Biting down on a hiss, she glowered at the little kit as he laughed and laughed, entirely unaware. Alpinekit had paused politely ahead of them, head turned to watch the display.
Harekit pushed Fogfreckleâs face away with his paws. âWhy do we need a new home?â He managed to ask between giggles. âDonât you have one already?â
âDonât you?â Moonstar muttered, smothering the unkind comment beneath Harekitâs laughter. She bent her head and licked at her chest fluff to hide her bitter expression. She could already feel a bruise blooming on her jaw. The pair of them could play later â just so long as they got to wherever they were going before Moonstarâs tail froze off.
Or before her patience wore completely thin.
âOur last home was⌠ruined,â Fogfreckle explained delicately. âSo now we have to find a new one.â
Harekit pushed himself to his paws and shook the snow from his pelt, energy renewed. He was already firing off another question before he had got fully upright. âThatâs sad,â Harekit stated matter-of-factly. He broke into a trot to keep up with Fogfreckleâs long strides as the cats resumed their trek. âDo you miss your old home.â
âImmensely.â
âWere you and Moonstar the only brother and sister at your old home?â Harekit continued to press, eyes blazing with curiosity. âI donât have any. Alpine doesnât either, right, Alpinekit?â
If Alpinekit was startled to be addressed suddenly, it didnât show in his ever-level expression. He blinked his large, cyan eyes slowly at Harekit, then shook his head to confirm that, no, he didnât have any siblings either.
Fogfreckle hummed thoughtfully. âWell, there was Pitchstar. He was the leader before Moonstar,â he explained to the kits, gesturing towards his sister. âPitchstar had a sister once, supposedly. I donât think us kits â Moonstar and I, I mean â were supposed to know about her. I donât think he wanted anyone to know about her. Pitchstar never talked about his sister.â
Here we go.
Both kits were looking up at Fogfreckle with wide, curious eyes. Moonstar had heard this story before, back when they were still apprentices and tasked with the duty of clearing moss from the elderâs den. Moonstar had found the activity rather soothing, but it had bored Fogfreckle to tears. There werenât many elders in their camp, but theyâd been around long enough to know Pitchstar when he was young, and liked to tell tales of their early NimbusClan days to keep the pair of them amused.
âBefore Pitchstar was leader, Clan leadership only ran in the family. It was passed down from parent to child â to the firstborn litter, to whichever kit StarClan deemed held the most promise.â Fogfreckle swished his tail, eyes glittering. âWhen the Chosen kit came of age, theyâd become deputy â thatâs what I am â and begin training to become the next leader.
âAnyways, I guess Pitchstarâs sister was real upset that her brother was chosen for the role of leader instead of her, so she gathered up a bunch of their Clanmates and set off to make her own Clan.â
Moonstar interjected with a responsible, âbut thatâs just a kits tale,â at the same time Harekit blurted, âand then what happened?â
âDunno.â Fogfreckle shrugged, electing to ignore his sister. âNever heard from them again, I guess. I wonder if thatâs why Pitchstar never talked about it â he was too sad about losing her, maybe. It happened way before Moonstar and I were born.â
âPitchstar never talked about his sister because she doesnât exist,â Moonstar insisted. âWe never ran into a Clan like that at our borders. Itâs likely just a tale our elders made up to keep us busy while we changed their moss. Elders love to gossip.â
Fogfreckle ignored her once more, leaning low to grin at each of the kits. Moonstarâs tail lashed. They, too, werenât paying Moonstar any attention, rapt with Fogfreckle as they were. âWhat if we meet her and her Clan when we get to where weâre going, hm? What if they set off in the same direction as us?â At these words, Harekitâs eyes blazed, and even Alpinekitâs pricked ears perked higher.
âLetâs go! Weâre gonna find the lost Clan!â Harekit shouted, bounding ahead of the cats and kicking up little flurries of snow as he went, his exhaustion apparently forgotten. Alpinekit padded after him, gait slower but tail raised happily.
âNot too far!â Fogfreckle called after them. A small, pleased smile was curving his muzzle.
Moonstar fell into step beside her brother. Her tone was flat. âTelling the kits ghost stories?â
The smile dropped from his face. âHave you got a stick for a tail? Itâs not a ghost story. For all we know, itâs totally true.â
Moonstar huffed. It seemed like she wasnât invisible, after all. âIâm just staying. It was probably made up to keep us entertained.â
âWell itâs working, isnât it?â Fogfreckle flicked a paw in the direction of the kits, who were bumbling along in the snow ahead of them. Harekit was chattering animatedly at Alpinekit. Moonstar had never seen the brown kit look so pleased in all their moons of traveling together. âAnd anyways,â Fogfreckle went on, âwhat does it matter if itâs true or not? Itâs making the time go by, and StarClan knows we have plenty of that to get through.â
âWeâd reach our destination faster if we didnât have kits to be keeping track of.â
âItâs leafbare. Weâre not reaching our destination any faster even if we didnât have them with us. We donât even know where our destination is.â
âFogfreckle,â Moonstar sighed. She wasnât going to be able to knock any sense into him this way. Her tone softened. âWe shouldnât be dragging kits into this. Itâs not⌠stable.â
âYouâre the one who picked up Harekit,â Fogfreckle shot back accusingly, whirling around to face her. âWhat other choice do we have, Moonstar? Leave them to fend for themselves?â
Moonstar is reminded of Harekit, sat alone in the snow under a bush, staring up at her with his big, green eyes. âWellâ noââ
âThen what? We canât just leave them, especially not now that weâve taken on responsibility for them. They have to come with us. Itâs not an ideal circumstance to be raising kits in, sure, but itâs not something we have control over. Just see it as more incentive to find a camp to settle down in.â
Incentive? Incentive? As if Moonstar hadnât been pushing forward on incentive alone since theyâd left the rubble of their old camp behind. Her tail lashed. âIâve had incentive. Remember when you got attacked and I was the one who licked your wounds and said we should find somewhere new to stay?â
âWhy are you being so argumentative about this? Youâve already admitted we canât leave the kits behind â what do you suggest we do? You need to be supportive for them. Youâre our leader, Moonstar. You could at least act like it.â
Moonstarâs brother departed with a lash of his tail, hastening to catch up with the kits. Moonstar stood frozen in the snow, stalled not by the cold but by her brotherâs words. Her tail drooped. Her paws stung and the deep snow gnawed up her legs, but all she could do was stand and watch as her brother walked away. Fresh snowflakes began to swirl down from the sky, landing on her whiskers and blurring her vision.
Hi!! I was wondering if you were open to giving comic tips to someone experimenting with the medium in CSP for the first time?
Do you hand-draw your own bubbles, or have you adapted the built-in tool for them? How do you generally choose your font sizes and spacing within the dialogue bubbles, etc.?
I really like CSP as a tool, but it's a bit obtuse at times, and I feel like it's not super intuitive to know how to adjust settings for ease of production;;;
Thanks for your insight!! Can't wait to see more of your Stardew comics, I really really like them!
Hi there!
I use neither a hand-drawn or built in tool for the speech bubbles, but rather this free one from the CSP asset store
Make illustrations, manga, comics and animation with Clip Studio Paint, the artistâs tool for drawing and painting. All you need for drawing
I like it better than the built-in tools mostly for the more haphazard look of the bubbles (which can be altered further with the 'roundness of corner'-setting - I have mine set to about 65) and I prefer it to the hand-drawn version because it's easier and faster to control and create a lot of them.
Here's a little demonstration of how they work
Anytime you click inside them with the text tool, a line of text gets created perfectly center inside the bubble. Really helpful stuff. You can still move around the text separately, but it'll move along with the bubble as you manipulate it.
And here's what all three of them along with their text look like in the layer window
So they all get created and linked on the same layer and you can move and manipulate them as a unit or individual objects, using the Operation -> Object tool.
At the size of canvas I work on for my pages (A4), I usually go with a font size of 13, but I also use a font that only has capitalized letters, so I imagine you could go bigger with a different font.
