"‘Hope is optimism with a broken heart'. This means that hope has an earned understanding of the sorrowful or corrupted nature of things, yet it rises to attend to the world even still. We understand that our demoralisation becomes the most serious impediment to bettering the world. In its active form, hope is a supreme gesture of love, a radical and audacious duty, whereas despair is a stagnant rejection of life itself. Hope becomes the energy of change."
-Nick Cave, on Faith, Hope and Carnage
Clearing the buffer
I’m planning to leave by the time Tumblr pulls the trigger on itself with the porn and nudity ban on the 17th. The next week will see a flood of stuff that’s been in my queue, and then that’s unexpectedly it, I think, for my time with Tumblr.
I’ve been blogging here continually since August 2007 in a few different channels and appreciated, for so long, the unfiltered nature of the platform… there’s art, sex, humor, politics, appreciation, sadness… beautiful thoughts and beautiful imagery from beautiful souls. Unless you were an absolute bastard, you didn’t worry about being “Zucc’d” for sharing something human, artistic, relevant, or real. It was all here.
This, my very own core blog that I started Tumblr with, never spread widely (I never pushed it like my other channels, which carry 15k followers between them)… it’s peculiar and eclectic and how I like it. My interests over the decade were along the avenues of the macabre, fabulous, and artistic and, holy shit!!1!, occasionally non-classical-art nudity and sex and female-presenting-nipples (and more than a few butts) were a part of the appreciation. It’s no big deal when you’re an actual person living in the world, you know?
Anyway. I won’t bother curating with the looming hassle of censorship under that vague recurring idea of a “community” who, by nature of having pearls to clutch and cynical “standards” to enforce, wasn’t ever mine. I invite them to live happily in their gardens while I tend to my own. Alas, this place is being suited just for them now, not us anymore. This is a different space now, one that WILL tell me “Oh… you can’t share THAT. We won’t let anyone see it.”
I may still check in here for the art and beauty (but not directly/ mostly though RSS) for a while but will be haunted with wondering at what’s missing, what share crossed too far into an arbitrary moderation DMZ and is forever hidden from anyone’s view, what images were second-guessed and never put forward at all due to a censorship-induced prudence.
This was more than I interesting to write. Enjoy the flood of stuff through next week. Stay tuned for a more about where this little thing goes, and come along if you like.
The name of the blog came from three random words from near the end of Richard K. Morgan’s Black Man scifi-noir (later retitled as Th1rt3en), from a description of how the movement of exterior traffic lights played through the gaps in a darkened room’s windowblinds. I liked to post images that were odd or ironic (but not necessarily humorous). Later, images of the grotesque, macabre, and unusually beautiful (but still somewhat offbeat) joined.
