Goro Akechi and Makoto Niijima are so similar as characters that if you hate Makoto but love Akechi then I think the main reason is honestly that Makoto's a woman.

Yes, they have their differences. Makoto is from a financially privileged background while Akechi grew up in poverty, and Akechi is naturally good at nearly everything while Makoto has to work herself to the bone to earn high marks in school.
But in the end, they'e way more alike than they are different. They're both canonically masking nearly all the time despite their implied neurodivergence (Mako's autistic and Chi Chi has BPD). They both grew up very lonely and only started to connect with people when they met the Thieves. They're both very intelligent and exceptional, yet deeply insecure, jealous and sad. They're both working so hard to please other people all the time.
Akechi is what Makoto would have become if not for the Thieves, and Makoto is what Akechi would have become if he met them just a few years earlier.
After the engine room, Makoto is the first person to mention Akechi's death and how it's affecting her.
Akechi and Makoto are both such interesting, 3-dimensional characters who could have such an interesting relationship with each other but no one wants to explore that because they hate women and/or gay people
