The Shade Between Us 2 - The Ancestral Choir - Ch. 15
I fired on everyone that didn’t have eye shine and was dressed in black, my mind a hazy mess as I fire then look around for my husband and child. My heart was trying to claw its way from my chest to get to them. Aim and shoot, aim and shoot. That is all I’m doing as I make a straight line through the fighting before finally seeing Remmick on the opposite side of the fighting.
“Where is she!” I yell in panic as I drop to my knees before them. Remmick’s angered eyes is aimed toward the fighting as he brings Niobe to my arms. I look at her wailing face, and I see the scratch above her head.
“Oh!” I cry as I rub my thumb over her cut. “Mommy’s here.”
I chant those words as I bring her to me, trying to soothe her.
“Estelle, you need to go!” Remmick said and I looked up at him.
“What!” I snapped as his eyes are looking at the fight with shock. I turn and see these intruders, were staking the hive through the heart of beheading them. The woman, Geneva, is moving with swift precision, firing round after round into the hearts of each hive member. And I see her pull out a long silver blade and stab Cornbread through the heart making him snarl. I gasp in shock as I see his body catch flames. This couldn’t be happening! I’m being raised to my feet by Remmick.
“Go! Get to the forest!” he yells and I wince in pain not wanting to leave him. But with Niobe in my arms, and our house possibly holding more invading threats, I had no choice. I cry out in pain and turn holding up my gown as I run onto the trail into the semi lit forest. Niobe is screaming and I’m doing my best to run from the carnage without jostling her.
Romulus and Athena may stay behind to fight with Remmick, I couldn’t think about that right now. I have to get Niobe as far away from this as possible. A safehouse? Yes, on the other side of the forest may save us. A huge log stands in my path, and I do my best to climb over it, the ends of my gown snagging and tearing as I get over it. But I don’t care. Niobe is still screaming, still bawling which could alert more threats.
“Baby please!” I beg her trying to soothe and rock her. I rub the top of her small head with my cheek before continuing to move. Then a large form lands in front of me with a thud, a monstrous snarl comes my way as yellow eyes glow at me. It was a wolf, covered in scars and shaggy thick fur.
“Leaving so soon.” he growls. Was this Rellik? I thought he was dead outside the back door of the house! I pull out my gun and fire, but all I get is a click. Empty, both guns are. His laugh is deep and echo like. “Looks like you’re out of ammo witch.”
I hold Niobe close to me, the darkness consuming us more as I step back watching this large creature who takes a step forward.
“I will call my husband…” I threatened. Because I know he’ll come, he’ll have to. Rellik’s large body flexes, his body shaking as he laughs.
“You think you can call to him faster than I can get to you… try it. I dare you.” he threatens lowly, drool dripping down his jaws and onto the ground. My chest is rising and falling fast as I think of my options. I can’t outrun him or fight him, not with Niobe in my hands. He’ll come… I know he will.
I slowly start to inhale and Rellik is already charging.
“REMMICK!” I scream as I see large claws coming at us only for the large shadow of a wolf get sent soaring through the air hitting a tree with such force he breaks it. I gasp as I see Remmick’s back facing me, shirt torn to shreds, as his wings slowly close. He looks back at me red orbs piercing into me, monstrous fangs stretched some of his skin back.
“Are you hurt!” he asks and I shake my head.
“No!” I said hurriedly. The sound of calm footsteps come through the trees and slowly Geneva steps from the shadows, the moon is our only source of light. Behind the elf woman are the other two elves rolling their shoulders and cracking their necks.
“It does not have to end this way for you all.” Geneva says, her voice angelic almost as she speaks. Her eyes only on me, it was like Remmick did not even exist. “The vampires here can be easily killed, that much we have proven tonight. Come with us, and no more need to die.”
Remmick snarls lowly as he moves to keep my form hidden from the elves’ eyes. Rellik finally joins the elves shaking his head.
“We kill this one, and she’ll crumble.” he threatens. Remmick crouches just a bit as if ready to fight again, but we couldn’t take on the other elves on our own. Rellik snarls and rushes us again, however before he could get to even my husband, a large truck comes from over the hill plowing into the wolf again sending him flying and the elves jumped back pulling out their blades.
My eyes widened as the windows of the truck came down. It was Seamus and Shoshanna!
“We gotta go! That hive of yours is dwindling quick!” Seamus yells. Before I could say anything Remmick’s hand is grabbing my forearm and leading me to the back fo the truck.
“GO!” he yells. I see Romulus and Athena in the back seat, and I’m pushed inside with Niobe finally quieted in my arms despite hiccupping and cooing.
“What? No come with me!” I yell as Remmick shuts the door.
“I’ll hold them off. Get to safety.” He says and I shake my head, reaching out the window to grab him to yank him in too.
“No, Remmick come with us!” I scream as he takes my face in his hands. “Don’t leave us in this world alone.”
“Hey, hey… I ain’t going anywhere. I’ll find you. I always will.” he said. He kisses me hard and rough before he pulls back and jumps over the truck. “Seamus take her!”
And just like that the tires are squealing hard as the truck takes off, and the window was closing. I turn and look out the window to seeing hive members slowly walking like mindless zombies to meet the enemies. This wasn’t happening! I see Remmick’s form growing smaller and smaller, the darkness of the forest devouring him.
