During last night’s Republican debate, Jeb Bush claimed that Obama created ISIS by withdrawing troops, and then under criticism from Trump, he defiantly proclaimed his brother George W. Bush “kept us safe.”

And today he didn’t walk away from that ridiculous statement-- instead he doubled down on Twitter:

9/11 in which thousands died on American soil. Jeb even puts 9/11 in the photo in tweet. That happened on his brother’s watch. And don't tell me you blame that one on Clinton, but then blame Obama for the troop withdrawal that his brother signed in 2008. You could make an argument that Clinton is to blame for 9/11 or that Obama is to blame for the troop withdrawal, but you can’t pretend that George W. Bush isn’t responsible for either.

The Iraq War, which also led to the deaths and wounding of thousands of American.s

Letting North Korea develop nuclear weapons

All the Americans who were left to die in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

The botched Iraq occupation which let terrorists thrive in new country

Letting Iran start a nuclear program

And of course he never caught Bin Laden

So no, his brother did not keep us safe. And for saying he did, proudly, all pleased with himself, Jeb Bush is the Asshole of the Day.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for September 8, 2015

Kim Davis was released from jail today, which almost seemed like a disappointment to Mike Huckabee who had gone to Kentucky to throw a rally in her behalf. Having her walk out of jail ruins the optics of the boot of government on the throat of the pious martyr he was hoping for.

But he still found a way to keep the fight going after the judge said that Ms. Davis can’t interfere with the issuance of gay marriage licenses in her county. Huckabee said he would gladly go to jail:

"I have a message for the judge," Huckabee proclaimed, "and I say this with all my heart: If this judge believes that somebody must be put in jail because a person is willing to stand on the biblical definition of marriage ... Let Kim go, but if you have to put someone in jail, I volunteer to go. Let me go. Lock me up if you think that's how freedom is best served."

"I am willing to spend the next eight years in the White House leading this country," he thundered, "but I want you to know, I'm willing to spend the next eight years in jail but I'm not willing to spend one day under the tyranny of people who believe they can take our freedom and conscience away!"

Of course Gov. Huckabee knows that’s not how it works. We don’t let innocent people serve jail time on behalf of the guilty, except of course for those wrongfully arrested or convicted. But by offering he’s trying to get some of her martyr cred to rub off on him and maybe breathe some life into his presidential campaign that is going nowhere.

It does of course beg the question as to what  a President Huckabee would do about gay marriage when he’s in the White House? Would he just ignore the Supreme Court decision? Mike Huckabee is not an idiot-- he knows that the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of the law in this country. There is no clause for the law to be whatever the government official claims God told them to do.

And furthermore, Kim Davis doesn’t have to be issuing marriage licenses. There are plenty other jobs she could do that won’t offend her religious sensibility-- she is not forced to do this one. It’s a free country. The judge is compelling her to issue marriage licenses to gays as long as she continues to do the job of issuing marriage licenses, but the judge is not compelling her to keep that job. Mike Huckabee hasn’t spent a minute on that one.

So, for pretending that he would go to jail in her place, and trying to steal Kim Davis’ martyrdom for himself-- a martyrdom that she could avoid by just quitting her job-- Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Steve King, Asshole of the Day for September 6, 2015

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has made big news as the last holdout against issuing marriage licenses to gays. To the point that rather than comply, she chose to go to jail, where she currently sits in contempt of court.

And of course when someone uses their religion as a shield to hide their bigotry, there are politicians rushing to her defense as a way to elevate their status in the presidential campaign-- Mike Huckabee has started the #ImWithKim hashtag, and Ted Cruz has said he “unequivocally” supports her right to use her government position to oppress gays per her religion.

What none of these people will acknowledge is that they would not support some government official’s right to impose their religious rules on others if that official had a different religion. 

And among all this steps Rep. Steve King, normally only known for his racist xenophobia.  He tweeted this:

In 1963, we should not have honored SCOTUS decision to creat a wall of separation between prayer & school. Kim Davis for Rosa Parks Award.

There's really two awful things here:

That Kim Davis is like Rosa Parks

That people should have defied the Supreme Court when it ruled against prayer in public schools

These are both offensive. Prayer in public schools should be offensive to everyone, because if it's not your prayer, then you wouldn't want some teacher forcing your kid to say it. To imagine that school prayer is OK is to think that your religion will always be the one in charge. And to not care that others have a different religion than you.

But it's the Rosa Parks comment that really bothers me. Bigots of all sorts try to appropriate the righteousness of the Civil Rights movement to their pet causes, but there is always some disconnect which suggests that they don't get why the Civil Rights protesters are heroes.

I saw the other day that people on Twitter were making this Rosa Parks/Kim Davis comparison, but it wasn't until this weekend that I saw a public figure like Rep. Steve King making it. And it's offensive because it switches the oppressor and victim:

Rosa Parks was jailed for DEMANDING the same rights white people enjoyed. Kim Davis was jailed for DENYING gay people the rights she herself enjoys.

Kim Davis is not the Rosa Parks of gay marriage, she's the person who enforced the rule against Rosa Parks sitting in the front of that bus. But Steve King doesn't care about that-- the only oppression he can see is of people like him, not others. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

Yesterday we named Giuliani Asshole of the Day for disparaging Obama for not being raised right and not loving America.

Giuliani then went on not to apologize, but to keep saying it, deny he said anything wrong, etc.

So then today New York journalist Wayne Barrett details all the problems with that, including:

Giuliani's dad worked for the mob, served time, and dodged the draft

Giuliani also avoided the draft repeatedly, I guess because he loves America so much

Giuliani has done work shilling for Yemen and other enemies of America

Giuliani loved his wife Donna Hanover so much that she found out he was divorcing her from a press conference

Rudy Giuliani, Asshole of the Day for February 19, 2015

Ever since police shootings and racist policing returned to the news last summer, Rudy Giuliani has injected himself into the stories to push his racist viewpoints.

We first called attention to this when he asserted that the black community was responsible for any and all violence and crime committed by any black person, a standard he certainly doesn't hold white people to. We even highlighted Ta-Nehisi Coates well-deserved mocking of Giuliani's argument.

Then a month later we highlighted how Giuliani blamed Obama and peaceful protesters of racist police shooting for the death of two policemen.

But Giuliani hasn't stopped there. In a fundraiser for Scott Walker, Giuliani told the crowd:

"I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,” Giuliani said, as quoted by Politico. “He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.”

He later goes on to say: "What the hell? What’s wrong with this man that he can’t stand up and say there’s a part of Islam that’s sick?" This goes back to the recent nonsense over Obama pointing out that Christianity also has a history of extremist violence at the National Prayer Breakfast. And if you can't see what's wrong with that argument, here's what Digby had to say:

I don't know.  I guess for the same reason he doesn't stand up and say that there's part of Catholicism that's sick. After all, the Catholic priesthood has been crawling with child molesters for decades. For all we know, centuries.  I'm going to take a guess that as a Catholic he doesn't think it would be right to tar the vast majority of non-pedophile Catholics with the actions of those priests or define the religion itself as a pedophiliac belief system. 

I think she does a good job of pointing out how Giuliani lumps together groups to take responsibility for the worst of their members, but then doesn't apply the same responsibility to the groups that he is a member.

But back to Giuliani's Obama doesn't love America and wasn't raised right argument, I think the real question is for Giuliani:

Loves America how, Rudy? Like you do-- only the white parts? The love that blames every black person for the crimes of a few black people, a standard you don’t hold white people to?

Not brought up the way you were? To what-- be racist? To trample people’s rights in the name of security?

Of course Giuliani isn't going to answer questions like that. His statements are dog-whistles to his audience about how Obama isn't like us, he's an outsider. Obama is black, we get it. Never mind that Obama's mother was every bit as white as Giuliani's mother. Nope. Doesn't matter to Giuliani. And for that, Giuliani is the Asshole of the Day.

UPDATE: Giuliani claims it's not racist because Obama's mother is white. Seriously:

“Some people thought it was racist — I thought that was a joke, since he was brought up by a white mother, a white grandfather, went to white schools, and most of this he learned from white people,” Mr. Giuliani said in the interview. “This isn’t racism. This is socialism or possibly anti-colonialism.”

Sorry, Rudy, but let's not pretend there's no history of racism against people who are only half black. It insults us both.

Gene Alday, Asshole of the Day for February 17, 2015

How can you tell if someone's being racist? I suppose that's a complicated question, but when they are starting sentences with "all the blacks", then they are certainly on the road to Racist Town, even if they eventually turn off.

Rep. Gene Alday of Mississippi claims he's not a racist, but then he said this:

The comments in question refer to African-Americans in his hometown of Walls, a small community in DeSoto County. Alday, 57, told Clarion-Ledger investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell that he comes "from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call 'welfare crazy checks.' They don't work."

He also said that when he went to the emergency room one time, "I liked to died. I laid in there for hours because they (blacks) were in there being treated for gunshots."

He would later claim he wasn't being racist and was being quoted out of context. That seems impossible, because the only way the speaker of this quote isn't racist is if he's quoting a racist. These were his words, and his statement was racist.

Finally today he apologized, saying

Addressing the House of Representatives, Alday acknowledged he made a mistake without repeating his original comments.

"I didn't do it with intent, but I am deeply sorry for my recent statements and I was wrong to say what I did and there is no excuse for my behavior," Alday said. "I value the relationships I've made with everyone in this House."

It's great that he apologized, but it's also to our way of thinking an admission that he is in fact the Asshole of the Day.

David Moore, Asshole of the Day for February 16, 2015

Montana Rep. David Moore was the victim of a crime last year, and that crime was seeing a few naked bicyclists. True story.

But a member of the legislature doesn't have to take this sitting down, he can do something, and so he has:

Moore, who is upset that group of naked bicyclists pedaled through Missoula last year, decided that what his state really needs right now is tighter regulations on trousers. His proposed bill, HB 365, would outlaw not just nudity, but also "any device, costume, or covering that gives the appearance of or simulates the genitals, pubic hair, anus region, or pubic hair region." Per the Billings Gazette:

The Republican from Missoula said tight-fitting beige clothing could be considered indecent exposure under his proposal.

"Yoga pants should be illegal in public anyway," Moore said after the hearing.

That's right-- yoga pants. Of all the problems in America today, yoga pants is where Rep. Moore decides he has had enough. 

Thankfully his fellow legislature don't share his passion on this issue, and so it's been tabled. But Asshole of the Day isn't an award about results, it's about intentions and statements, and I think we can all agree, Rep. Moore is the Asshole of the Day.

Thomas Corbin, Asshole of the Day for February 15, 2015

Now I suppose reasonable adults can have conversations about the pros and cons of various domestic violence legislation. However, if you're opposed to increased protections for battered women, you should perhaps lay off the jokes about women not being equal to men.

And yet, that's exactly what happened last week. While discussing pending criminal domestic violence legislation, South Carolina Senator Thomas Corbin has this conversation:

At one point in the conversation – which quickly escalated into a confrontation – Shealy is said to have angrily asked Corbin where he “got off” attacking women.

“Well, you know God created man first,” Corbin said, reportedly smirking at Shealy.  “Then he took the rib out of man to make woman.  And you know, a rib is a lesser cut of meat.”

Given this other incident where he wants Sen. Shealy to leave the room, she being the only woman in the Senate, he clearly thinks that women aren't equal to men, or he'd have no problem making his bizarre criticism of Common Core in front of her.

But this statement is really over the top, and joke or not, reflects how he really feels about the place of women in society. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

Saleh al-Saadoon, Asshole of the Day for February 13, 2015

We highlight plenty of American politicians who say horrible things about rape. In the last week or so we've had 

Star Parker claim that Obama talking about past Christian violence was "verbal rape"

West Virginia Delegate Brian Kurcaba talk about how beautiful a rape baby is

Rep. Brian Greene claim that having sex with an unconscious wife is not rape

But this is certainly not limited to American assholes. It's world-wide. Here's a Saudi historian lecturing about why women shouldn't drive, which somehow ends up with rape:

In December, it was announced that two women who flouted the driving ban were to be tried in a special court for terrorism.

“They don’t care if they are raped on the roadside - but we do,” he told his host Nadeen Bdeir, according to a translation from the Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri).

“Hold on, who told you that they don’t care about getting raped by the roadside?” she asked incredulously.

“It’s not a big deal for them beyond the damage to their morale,” Dr al-Saadoon claimed. “In our case, however, the problem is of a social and religious nature.”

The amazing thing is how rape is something women must tolerate if they insist on independence. He doesn't imply that anything should be done to prevent rape other than having male relatives drive women around. That's some serious rape culture shit right there.

So, for using possible rape as an excuse to oppress women, rather than thinking men should, you know, stop raping women, Dr Saleh al-Saadoon is the Asshole of the Day.

Vince Vaughn Says Affirmative Action Is Racist

The idea is that those who have been at a disadvantage because of race deserve a leg up when it comes to landing opportunities.

But then you’re evaluating someone based on race, which is racism. Rights don’t come to you because you’re a man or a woman or African American or European or Jewish. And I certainly don’t think the federal government should be in the business of deciding things or handing out money based on factors like these. It’s the same with same-sex marriage. Who cares what people feel about each other? Let people decide for themselves who they can marry. It’s not the government’s job. It’s between you and your partner and your church or synagogue or whatever you believe in.

I think history has proven without a doubt that the proper role of government is to protect individuals’ rights and liberties. That has always been the most prosperous, freest society for people to live in. And when government gets too involved, society turns into a place that gets very, very ugly.

He doesn't need it, wasn't ever discriminated against, so doesn't see why there would be a need to right past wrongs. But he's white, so it's his privilege to see it that way.

But this whole keep-the-government-out line is just playing to entrenched racism, because if we end Jim Crow but don't ever do anything to right that wrong, then the people who suffered under Jim Crow remain at a disadvantage because their families weren't allowed to accumulate wealth, business connections, etc. Having the government do nothing just solidifies the advantages of the racists who benefited from Jim Crow.

Star Parker, Asshole of the Day for February 11, 2015

Ever since President Obama made the completely factually true statement at the National Prayer Breakfast that Christianity has been used in service of horrible violence and oppression, not just in Europe in the Middle Ages, but in America to support slavery and Jim Crow, the reaction from conservative Christians has been over the top ridiculous.

On Monday we called out Mike Huckabee for basically claiming Obama was a Muslim out to oppress Christians. But he was not the only one-- there was also Fox host Eric Bolling claiming that the number of killings "in name of religion" by non-Muslims stands at "zero." Yeah.

But then on Hannity the other night we had Star Parker go to a whole new place with her outrage:

The "Hannity" panel was discussing the President's address at the National Prayer Breakfast last week, in which he said Islam was not the only religion with a history of violence.

"I was in that room," conservative activist Star Parker told host Sean Hannity. "And it was frankly verbal rape."

"Wow," said co-panelist and Fox personality Gerlado Rivera, folding his hands and looking into camera. "Yikes. Yikes."

"Oh, yeah," Parker said. She continued, but Hannity was still catching his breath after her remark.

"That's a harsh term," Hannity said.

Parker looked straight at Hannity.

"Verbal rape is what it was," she said.

"Verbal rape"? How so? In that she was forced against her will to hear facts? Or that her islamophobia was challenged without warning or her prior consent? What definition of rape is she using?

Is she suggesting that we must now warn people and get their consent before challenging their bigotry? If that's the case, then we need to have new procedures for lots of situations, such as

Obama would’ve been required to warn and get permission of all racists before being allowed to assume the office of president and govern competently, rather than living up to their racist stereotypes.

Women will need to warn and get the consent of sexists in the workplace before they are allowed into roles of management.

Marco Rubio will need to warn and get the consent of racists before taking any job other than dishwashing or landscaping.

Because otherwise all those bigots and sexists might feel they too have  been "verbally raped". But none of that is true. This is nonsense. There is no “verbal rape” here. There is only her attempt to escalate her offended bigotry to something that sounds violent. I may have some patience for people using inflammatory words in an off-the-cuff reaction, but she’s been making the rounds, always saying “verbal rape”, so this is no accident.

So, for claiming that Obama's statement of facts amounts to "verbal rape", Star Parker is the Asshole of the Day.

Kanye West, Asshole of hte Day for February 10, 2015

On Sunday night, Kanye West performed at the Grammys twice – once alone, and once alongside Rihanna and Paul McCartney. Oh, and then, of course, there was the impromptu third performance. That’s the one everyone’s still talking about.

In the off-chance you missed it (and the media storm that followed), Beck’s ‘Morning Phase’ won Album of the Year, besting Beyoncé’s self-titled juggernaut in the process. When the quiet and soft-spoken Beck took the stage, Kanye bounded up after him in a dick move reminiscent of his infamous VMAs/Taylor Swift stunt in 2009. But in a rare bit of self-restraint, he quickly returned to his seat as Beck good-naturedly called after him to stay.

Everyone laughed (even if Jay Z seemed horrified at first) and for a brief, shining moment, it looked like Kanye West had finally developed a sense of humor about himself. But then he reminded us how utterly adorable it was to even consider it.

Speaking to E! at a Grammys after-party, West opened his mouth and out spewed this:

I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé.

At this point, we tired of it. What happens is, when you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration. We, as musicians, have to inspire people who go to work every day, and they listen to that Beyoncé album, and they feel like it takes them to a different place. And then they do this promotional event, and they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. We aren’t playing with them anymore.

And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ‘Ye stepped on that stage.

Asked the next day if he was even familiar with Beck’s work, West replied:

“Come on, man, I love Beck, but he ain’t have the album of the year ... Beck knows that Beyoncé should’ve won ... You know that.”

Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: By pretty much any standard, ‘Beyoncé’ was a ground-breaking album. It would have been an extremely worthy Album of the Year recipient. But even Beyoncé can’t win them all. (In fact, I like to think she purposely loses awards on occasion just to fuel the myth that she’s actually human.)

Awards are often subjective, so Grammy voters decided to bestow Beck with the Album of the Year trophy. It’s not like he was undeserving. Sucks if your friends lose when you think they should win, but Kanye’s devotion to Beyonce is starting to get a little creepy.

For starters, his beef about the Grammys’ “disrespect” of her is ludicrous. With 52 nominations (both as a member of Destiny’s Child and as a solo artist), she is the most nominated woman in Grammy history. She’s taken home the hardware in 20 of those instances, three of them on Sunday night alone.

Last year, Forbes dubbed her the world’s most powerful celebrity. She is not a scrappy up-and-comer. She doesn’t need anyone – let alone someone as divisive as Kanye West – fighting her battles in the public forum. You have to think at this point she’s got to be at least somewhat embarrassed by it all.

Garbage singer/goddess Shirley Manson summed it up best in her admonishment of Kanye:

In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete twat.

As for Beck, he handled the brouhaha exactly as you’d expect – with grace and dignity. It’s something Kanye should try sometime.

In the meantime, here’s an award that’s all his: Asshole of the Day.

Joni Ernst says she earned the right to call herself a ‘combat veteran’ despite never seeing combat:

The report pointed out that Ernst frequently reminded voters and now constituents of her combat veteran status, and she has not corrected others when they suggest she led troops into battle.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for February 9, 2015

Last week President Obama spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast and continued his assertion, stated often, that ISIS and other Islamic terrorists do not represent their entire religion, and that evil done in the name of Islam is no different than evil that has been done in the name of Christianity, not just throughout world history, but specifically American history with regards to slavery and Jim Crow. Here's what the president said:

Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

The facts of Christianity being used in service of those evils is 100% accurate, as Ta-Nehisi Coates goes at length to show.

But apparently bringing up facts is unforgivable. And, while many conservatives responded with crazy talk, it's Mike Huckabee we're highlighting today, for his was particularly ugly and he is running for president. Here's Huckabee's response:

"Everything he does is against what Christians stand for, and he's against the Jews in Israel," he said on "Fox and Friends." "The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community. It doesn't matter whether it's the radical Muslim community or the more moderate Muslim community."

Huckabee makes two assertions, both objectionable. So let's take them in order:

#1 "Everything he does is against what Christians stand for."

So which one of these things that Christians stand for does Obama act against?

Helping the poor?

Treating others the way he would like to be treated?

Or is it that in Mike Huckabee's very narrow view of his own religion all that Christians stand for is persecuting gays and oppressing women?

Please recall that Obama is a professed Christian, and that during the 2008 election, members of Mike Huckabee's party tried to make it unacceptable that Obama attended the Christian church run by Rev. Wright. Ring a bell?

#2 "The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community."

Look, during his presidency Obama

Prioritized killing Bin Laden

Increased drone attacks against Islamic terrorists

Began bombing ISIS

Negotiated to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons

That doesn't sound like undying and unfailing support to me.

But Mike Huckabee doesn't care about that. He expects the president of a constitutionally secular country will unconditionally put Christians above all others, and by Christians, those who hold the narrow view of the faith that Mike Huckabee has.

And even more than that, Mike Huckabee knows that this line of attack plays to the portion of American racists who believe Obama to be a secret Muslim. And for that, Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Ann Coulter, Asshole of the Day for February 6, 2015

During the State of the Union speech, President Obama called for more subsidies for college, in particular, community colleges.

And since Obama is for people getting a college education, suddenly conservatives will have to be against it. And so it's no surprise that Ann Coulter is leading the charge:

Coulter told Florida radio host Joyce Kaufman on Monday that such programs are just a “scam” to “subsidize the most left-wing industry in America, that spends its days indoctrinating kids to hate Republicans.”

The "whole white privilege thing" that annoys her is the suggestion that people should examine sexism and racism (and other ways that one group gets privileges that another doesn't). If society today had no more sexism or racism, then examining privilege would be an exercise that would die out quickly.

But of course there is still plenty of racism and sexism out there. But she wants us all to ignore that, leave it unexamined. It's not like these things will disappear if we all stop talking about them, so we can only assume that Ms. Coulter wants them to continue. And for that, she is the Asshole of the Day.

Republican says rape can be ‘beautiful’ if it produces child

A Republican state lawmaker in West Virginia said on Thursday that while rape is horrible, it’s “beautiful” that a child could be produced in the attack. According to Huffington Post, Charleston Gazette reporter David Gutman was on the scene when Delegate Brian Kurcaba (R) said, “Obviously rape is awful,” but “What is beautiful is the child is that could come from this.”
