Why does men’s gymnastics go by highest scoring team pretty much but not women’s?

Yeah I don’t get it, say what you want about fairness but the WAG method produces a much better team imo. Is there a reason the men’s selection committee chose to do it this way?

A lot less media attention on men’s gymnastics in the USA so maybe it’s just less high stakes, and they don’t want to make it complicated?
