WITCH OF KATTΣGAT

‘     SOMETIMES  IT  IS  JUST  ABOUT  WHAT  IS  EASIER  AND  WE  ONLY  LOOK  FOR  ELOQUENT  OR  DIVINE  WAYS  TO  REASON—     ’     her  lips  are  pressed  slightly  upon  a  feeling  of  melancholy  for  aslaug  does  speak  from  experience     &     remembers  many  circumstances  in  which  she  as  found  herself  in  a  complicated  position.  her  smile  is  wistful  as  she  absently  toys  with  a  curl  of  her  own  hair,  her  answer  spoken  in  a  soft  voice:     ‘     my  youngest  son.  he  lives  because  i  was  not  going  to  give  up  on  him.  but  is  it  for  the  greater  good  that  he  will  always  be  in  pain  and  never  walk  ?  it  would  have  been  easier  to  him,  his  brothers,  and  myself,  to  listen  to  his  father  and  kill  him  on  the  day  where  he  was  born.     ’

‘     in  my  experience  men  only  say  that  when  they  have  done  something  terrible  they  can  not  reconcile  with  their  own  conscience,  or  when  they  already  expect  something  equally  bad  to  happen.  i  wonder  if  and  which  case  applies  to  you  ?     ’

‘     YET  I  THANK  YOU  BECAUSE  YOU  AND  YOUR  FAMILY  ARE  PRECIOUS  TO  ME  AND  YOU  HAVE  DONE  SO  MUCH  FOR  ME.     ’     &     whereas  aslaug  may  not  have  known  what  it’s  like  to  have  paternal  figures  in  her  own  life,  orphaned  far  too  early  in  her  childhood,  she  yet  feels  like  her  sons  could  not  have  grown  up  around  more  beautiful     &     loyal  friends  welcoming  them  with  open  arms  as  if  they  are  family,  too.  and  is  that  not  what  they  are,  one  way  or  another  ?  family  they  have  chosen  themselves  for  it’s  the  same  spirit  they  share.  but  no  matter  her  resolve,  aslaug  can  not  shake  off  feeling  the  throb  of  her  heartbeat  even  during  still,  quiet  moments.  upon  realizing  what  her  destiny  will  be,  her  smile  has  become  more  strained,  no  longer  reaching  her  eyes.     ‘     it  is  not  the  fateful  arrow  i  fear,  but  the  consequences—  she  will  mark  her  own  downfall,  but  what  price  are  my  sons  going  to  pay  ?  there  is  no  oath  stopping  her  from  harming  my  sons.  all  i  wanted  for  them  was  kattegat  to  be  a  place  they  can  call  home  and  always  come  back  to  when  they  have  been  away  on  their  travels.     ’     taking  deep  breaths  with  long  exhales,  she  has  reached  for  sigrúnn’s  hand  to  curl  her  own  fingers  around  hers,  the  blood  from  the  sacrifice  smudging  her  own  fingers  now.     ‘    but  it  comforts  me  knowing  my  sons  will  not  be  without  friends  and  people  they  consider  family—  we  both  know  floki  may  have  become  more  a  father  figure  to  ivar  than  ragnar  ever  could.     ’

‘     I  AM  NOT  MY  FATHER,  NOR  YET  MY  MOTHER—  BUT  HAVE  I  NOT  PROVED  THAT  I  HAVE  A  GIFT  OF  MY  OWN  ?     ’     back  then,  it  was  neither  coincidence,  nor  chance,  upon  which  she  has  foretold  the  future  of  their  unborn  children.  sigurd  who  she  believed  to  bear  the  image  of  the  dragon  Fafnir  in  his  eye,  and  the  prophecy  regarding  the  health  of  their  fourth  child.  blessed  by  the  Norns  allowing  her  to  see  images  of  what  challenges  lie  ahead  of  them,  aslaug  knows  neither  them,  nor  the  gods,  can  change  the  fate  woven  for  them  at  birth.  it  is  an  equally  humbling  experience  as  well  as  tragedy  that  some  prophecies  are  bound  to  happen  no  matter  what  they  will  sacrifice  for  the  Norns  to  change  their  mind.     ‘     i  am  trying  to  be  honest  with  you—  but  i  think  neither  of  us  is  doing  well  to  understand  what  the  other  is  saying.  we  should  keep  trying  to,  however.  the  least  i  want  is  blame  to  be  the  only  thing  that  is  left  in  the  end.     ’     to  either  blame  one  another  or  the  gods  that  ivar  lives,  blame  because  no  matter  how  much  she  loves  all  of  her  children     &     would  sacrifice  her  entire  heart  to  ensure  their  well  -  being,  there  will  only  be  one  who  she  loves  more  than  anyone  else  alive.  blessed  by  the  Norns  with  sight,  but  not  entirely  freed  from  being  a  flawed  human  being.     ‘     then  we  shall  both  do  our  best.     ’

HER  FEATURES  SOFTEN  UPON  OFFERING  A  SMALL  SMILE  FOR  SHE  KNOWS  WHAT  HER  FATE  WILL  BE.     &     though  she  still  must  learn  that  she  will  not  receive  the  same  amount  of  comfort  she  is  willing  to  provide,  for  her  pride  is  her  demise,  it  does  not  lessen  the  tone  of  her  voice  rich  with  understanding     &     acceptance:     ‘     then  maybe  we  shall  not  speak  of  one  thing  when  we  intend  to  talk  about  another  thing  and  be  more  honest  with  each  other,  and  ourselves.     ’     no  longer  looking  at  ragnar,  her  gaze  returns  to  observe  their  newborn  son,  he  who  she  believes  that  the  gods  have  equally  blessed  as  well  as  cursed.     ‘     i  know  you  do  not  want  him  to  suffer  and  that  you  have  only  taken  him  into  the  woods  because  you  believe  it  to  be  merciful.  i  do  not  want  him  to  suffer  either  but—  the  Norns  want  him  to  live  and  one  day,  i  believe,  you  will  understand  why.     ’     inhaling  deeply  with  bright  eyes  as  she  keeps  gazing  at  their  boy  with  a  soft  expression,  it  becomes  apparent  that  she  does  not  see  a  baby  with  debilitated  limbs.  for  all  the  flaws  people  will  note  about  him  in  the  future,  she  adores  him  several  times  more  now.     AND  IN  THIS  MOMENT  YOU  KNOW  ALREADY  IT  WILL  BE  YOUR  GREATEST  CHALLENGE  /  YOUR  GREATEST  FAILURE  /  TO  MAKE  SURE  YOUR  SONS  KNOW  THEIR  MOTHER  LOVE  THEM  EQUALLY.     (  but  no  matter  how  much  they  will  question  her,  their  safety  will  be  her  priority.  )     ‘     all  i  am  asking  you  is  to  love  him  like  you  love  all  your  children.     ’

HOW  OFTEN  DID  SHE  CLAIM  THAT  SHE  IT  NOT  HER  FATHER  NOR  YET  HER  MOTHER—  PROUD  OF  HER  HERITAGE  BUT  EQUALLY  HUMBLED,  TOO.     &     in  early  days  those  words  have  been  spoken  for  a  false  appearance,  to  pretend     &     to  deceive  that  she  does  not  care  that  she  can  not  live  up  to  the  legend  her  parents  were.     WHAT  IS  WEAKNESS  WHEN  IT  CAN  NOT  BE  DEFINED  BY  WHETHER  OR  NOT  SOMEONE  CARRIES  A  SHIELD  ?     ‘     for  a  long  time  i  was  ashamed  that  no  shield  nor  weapon  wrought  from  metal  nor  iron  felt  comfortable  in  my  hands.  that  i  am  not  like  my  mother  and  thus—  weak.     ’     in  spite  of  her  wistful  words,  aslaug  surveys  their  surrounding  with  a  pleased  expression,  smiling  confidently  that  not  only  kattegat  has  grown  with  the  help  of  björn,  but  her  sons  have  grown,  too.     NOW,  SHE  IS  UNAPOLOGETIC  THAT  SHE  HAS  FORSAKEN  THE  SHIELD  FOR  A  DIFFERENT  KIND  OF  POWER.     ‘     but  i  have  learned  that  being  strong  must  not  be  about  physical  strength  but  to  have  the  courage  to  stand  for  something  you  believe.  to  embrace  your  point  of  view  by  means  of  argument  rather  than  shedding  blood,     ’     she  hums,  her  cheekbones  raised  prominently  from  smiling  as  she  observes  astrid,  lightly  swaying  in  place.     ‘     what  about  you,  astrid  ?  i  know  you  are  still  young  and  i  believe  you  are  curious  to  see  what  else  is  out  there  but—  you  have  a  caring  heart.  could  you  imagine  to  be  a  mother,  one  day  ?      ’

PREDICTIONS  UTTERED  UNDER  DIVINE  INSPIRATION  CAN  BE  EQUALLY  A  BLESSING  AS  WELL  AS  A  CURSE—     &     though  there  is  much  about  lagertha  and  her  pain  aslaug  might  not  understand,  it  does  not  stop  her  from  feeling  increasingly  empathetic     &     to  share  a  sad  smile     &     reach  out  for  her  in  solidarity.  lightly  laying  her  hand  on  lagertha’s  arm,  she  slowly  nods.     ‘     that  is  the  irony  about  prophecies—  they  tell  us  a  certain  outcome  and  inspire  specific  expectations  even  though  they  never  quite  tell  us  a  specific  story,     ’     like  ragnar  who  has  been  promised  five  sons  but  did  not  consider  the  possibility  that  not  all  might  be  born  from  the  same  womb.     IS  THAT  NOT  THE  TRUE  CRUELTY  OF  THE  GODS  AND  NORNS  ?  TO  MAKE  PROMISES  AND  RAISE  HOPE  UNTIL  MEN  REALIZE  THEIR  MISTAKE  ?     in  the  end,  both  women  carry  the  great  burden  to  fulfill  the  prophecy,  after  all.  now,  wistful  her  words  are  going  to  be,  it  is  an  attempt  to  lighten  the  mood  for  something  brighter  and  far  more  promising,  to  remember  what  they  have  in  common    &     share.  she  leans  in  with  raised  eyebrows  and  offers  a  questioning  gaze:     ‘     is  it  not  possible  that  the  same  can  be  claimed  for  our  body  and  mind  ?  now  i  find  myself  realizing  that  i  might  never  love  anyone  more  than  all  sons  of  ragnar.  i  could  not  be  happier  for  my  sons  to  have  a  wonderful  brother  like  your  björn.     ’

‘     YOU  LIVE  BECAUSE  OF  THE  GODS  WHO  WEAVE  OUR  DESTINIES  AND  BECAUSE  OF  THE  NORNS  WHO  DECIDE  WHICH  THREAD  MUST  BE  SPUN  FOR  YOU,  IVAR—     ’     &     even  the  gods  can  not  sway  the  mind  of  the  Norns  nor  change  their  own  fate   —   decide  who  is  to  live  and  who  must  die  when  the  deities  who  stand  even  above  the  gods  have  something  entirely  else  in  mind.  there  must  be  no  blame  for  ragnar  who’s  been  trying  to  follow  their  customs     &     who  truly  believed  himself  merciful  upon  sparing  both  son     &     mother  the  pain  of  a  fruitless  life  within  a  mangled  body.  there  must  be  no  praise  for  a  mother  who  followed  both  son     &     father  into  the  woods  so  shortly  after  giving  birth  because  she  has  known  her  baby  must  live.  but  no  matter  her  awareness  of  these  things,  it  will  always  be  a  smile  taking  over  her  face  when  she  acknowledges  how  much  her  own  son  validates  her  for  rescuing  him  then.  even  upon  knowing  her  belief  that  they  have  each  their  own  fate  to  fulfill     &     to  tread  the  path  laid  out  in  front  of  them.     ‘     the  Norns  want  you  to  live  because  there  will  be  no  other  like  you.  they  honor  it  that  the  gods  have  blessed  you  with  great  wits  and  a  keen  mind,  but  cursed  you  in  the  same  breath.  be  humble  with  your  devotion  to  the  gods  and  the  Norns,  and  there  must  be  no  fear  that  you  have  become  lost.     ’
