Ask Credence Barebone

We are the New Salem Philantrophic Society. Our meetings are held on Wednesdays and Sundays by my mother, Mary Lou Barebone. If you have any questions you can either ask her directly, or come to me and I will do my best to answer your questions. The pamphlet will have more information. We hope we can catch your interest.

My scarf? I don’t understand. I don’t own a scarf.

Ma wakes me up early. Chastity, Modesty and I get up before the orphans to help ma prepare breakfast for the children and to organise the leaflets so each child can get a bunch when they’re done and ready to go outside. Chastity does a lot more, Modesty and I help with the easier tasks. We pray. We leave the church after the children and we get in before them to prepare their meals. When we’re not inside we’re out handing out leaflets and spreading the word. Sometimes Chastity holds minor speeches. Modesty is too young to hold speeches still and ma doesn’t want me to participate too much. During Wednesdays and Sundays we keep meetings for the Second Salemers. I’m always present but ma doesn’t want me to speak. I usually stay in the background. We’re not allowed out after dark. We go to bed early. We’re not supposed to talk to each other after 8 and we’re told to stay in our beds. I’m usually not let out of sight when we’re out, although ma doesn’t want us clinging on to her. Modesty is still allowed to play with the orphans sometimes, Chastity and I work more.

I helped Modesty to hide a stray cat in the church once. Ma has strictly forbidden us to keep pets since they’re filthy and carry diseases. Modesty loved that cat, she named it Deceit. But ma found out. I’m older and I should’ve known better than disobey and lie to ma. But I haven’t touched an animal since.

I don’t think I want to anymore. 

I help ma with organising meetings and looking after the orphanage. Sometimes she lets me go out alone to find new places to keep the meetings on so we can reach more people. I’m always present at meetings, but ma doesn’t want me to participate. Sometimes I look after Modesty. I like it when ma lets me take walks around the city by myself, but that rarely happens.  … Hobbies?
