I donât wanna grow up and get a job, I wanna be a mushroom in the forest
people whose first instinct is to smile when they make eye contact with you are some of earthâs treasures and need to be protected

{Open Starter - Fears}
There she stood, in front of the doors that lead to Castlecoming. To say that Salacia was anxious was a severe understatement. The mermaid princess still felt the pain from last time, she still felt the betrayal from her own cousin. She knew that Erika and the few others that helped save the event were all feeling similar cases.
Taking a breath, she looked around, adjusting the seashell crown she wore atop her head and stepping in, trying to keep her mind in the present. She wanted to have a good night, with the stress of her wedding, upcoming coronation and even just school in general, she needed to have fun. So, she took a breath and allowed herself to smile.
The place looked quite nice, and there was a very positive atmosphere, for a few moments, the princess was absorbed in the music, the dancing and the lights. She found herself bounce a bit with each step, her glittering dress reflecting the lights much like her scales in the sunshine. The mermaid had grown so distracted, she handnât noticed who she backed into.
Letting out a gasp, Salacia looked back to them. âIâm so sorry! I uh, guess I was having too much funâ she admitted awkwardly.
The demiboy begins to apologize right back, telling her that itâs Reedâs own fault, but they stop themselves upon taking notice of her headpiece.
âYooooo, that crown is bee-yoo-tee-full!â Reed enunciates out each syllable, giving the mermaid princess a look of approval. The sea is unfamiliar territory for Reedâsomething theyâd only ever heard about from water-talent fairies, and even among them, information about the ocean had been scarce. Seeing the seashells decorating her crown brought forth their curiosity and wonder, already having a slew of questions lined up in their mind.
âWhere, uh, where can I get somethinâ like that? Like jewelry like that. Itâs so pretty! Do they make âem where youâre from? Are their any shops nearby I can buy âem from? Man, Iâd love to visit the sea some day. âcept, yâknow, the whole breathing thing.â Reed pauses their rambles as the vibes emanating from the girl set off some red flags for them. âHey, uh...you okay?â It seems that the feeling is actively dwindling, but Reed still finds it present in herâtrying to be forced out but remaining adamantly in place.
Dread.

Fern kept her fists clenched, ready to pounce if Reed said anything alarming. She was a little surprised that they were really just standing there with mumble feet, almost shy after being confronted. That was a pretty weak lie, unless they werenât lying. If this had happened before, they should really be more used to people being upset with them. Maybe they were, hence the shyness.
âIâm not âup in my feelsâ, youâre up in my feels. What do you think youâre doing?â Sheâd put people in trances many times before, but it was always with intent from her first. In this case, Reed was supposedly only drawn to her emotions? Get real.
Reed takes notice of the clenched fists, which werenât as powerful of a tell as the emotions raging off of her at this instant, but they do tell Reed that things could get violent hereâsomething theyâd rather avoid.
They scratch behind their ear awkwardly, holding their hands out and making grasping-at-the-air gestures as they collect their thoughts in order to explain. âSee, I...thing is, I canât really turn it off. I can try anâ distract myself, though. Itâs just...yours feel pretty, uh, pretty loud right now, anâ itâs hard to ignore.â

Well, that was not the answer Cole had been expecting at all. If this kid was a VK, heâd probably think the student was illiterate since most of them hadnât even gone to school. Something told him that wasnât the case here, though.
âCanât read it? Theyâre numbers,â Cole pointed his pencil up to the board. Maybe the kid just needed to ignore the words if they were distracting or hard to read. Not that Cole could help much with the math, since he was struggling with it too, but at least he had some focus comparatively, âSo, you just do the same proof as we did before, but this time âXâ is the numerator. I think.â
Reed grimaces, not really wanting to go into it all, as it is pretty embarrassing. Presumably, by their age, reading shouldnât be a problem. Whether irâs words or numbers. Listening to words or numbers, they donât have too much of a problem understanding, though even then the terms tend to get a little jumbled up. Reading? A whole other issue.
âI think the word for it is...ironic,â Reed responds, remembering something their father had once stated. âMy name is Reed, but...reading ainât really my, uh...my fort.â Reedâs almost certain the wrong word was chosen there, but theyâre sure it at least sounded like fort.
âI donât get why mathâs gotta have letters no. Wasnât it hard enough with just the numbers?â They groan, glancing at Coleâs paper. âI didnât....I didnât do the other proof, broki. I donât even know how. We solve a problem then prove that we solved it? Like, ainât showinâ your work the same thing?â

Rhedyn snatched the book from Reedâs hands, only to realize it was justt another story book, not one of the ones sheâd thrown away, though she did find it a little funny that he struggled to read the cover. âI referred to treasure as in the old saying, âone manâs trash is another manâs treasureâ. With the low standards as set here on the Isle, many consider perfectly useless items to be of importance, such as jewelry or riches. Even if you do feel you are offending some, I might venture to say that a majority of people are either deserving of you offending them, or are not the type of people worth pleasing. âOne manâs trash is another manâs treasureâ can refer to people too,â She raises a grim a finger to point at Reed. The gesture may have been sweet is it hadnât come across so monotone.
âI donât believe youâd have an enjoyable time with the Tremaineâs or the Evil Queen, however if you feel the need is so important, I can take you to their houses before going home myself,â Though this was obviously going to be a fruitless effort on her friendâs part, Rhedyn had no hand in the game of meeting other villains, so it wouldnât hurt to help Reed along. Additionally, there was no way Rhedyn would be able to take Reed back to her fatherâs house, heâd break everything in sight and the Horned King would have his head for making noise.
Reedâs jumps a little at the sudden movement of Rhedyn snatching the book, their defensive instincts kicking in and getting them into a battle stance. It takes only a moment for them to realize this was no cause for alarm and to get back into their normal stance, though not quickly enough for any of it to go unnoticed
Tilting their head curiously, Reed wonders aloud, âWhadda you consider important stuff? Like, books? Theyâre pretty important. Or is it somethinâ special in pacific kindsa books?â Reed wishes that they could have the same love of literature. Itâs not that Reed doesnât enjoy learning, quite the contrary, rather their inability to read the way theyâre expected to has made all of that difficult for them.
Reed shakes their head in disagreement at Rhedynâs statement. âIâunno, Branches. Como, like, I donât know what they been through, ya feel? Especially here...thereâs just so much...hurt here. I donât wanna make it any worse for âem.â
When people advise Reed against meeting certain others, this only draws more curiosity out of them. They continued to hold out hope that theyâd somehow be able to connect to them on a level, whatever level that may be. So when Rhedyn mentions the Tremaines, and how Reed should steer clear, this only sparks more eagerness in them. âHeck yeah! Thatâd be super cool of you. Should I bring anything? A vegetable gift basket, maybe?â

Song Lyric Meme - Patience from Dreamgirls
Cole stared at the whiteboard, completely baffled by every symbol the teacher had written up. It was supposed to be equation theyâd need on the final, but none of the corresponding letters made sense to him, and his notes were becoming more and more like chicken scratch as time passed. With a deep breath, Cole leaned over the student next to him.
âLook, Iâm not saying we should cheat, but do you have any idea how to help me with this? I have no idea what weâre doing,â He admitted, gesturing to the board again.
@askreed
Reed had been staring blankly at the whiteboard for a while now, only snapping back to reality every now and again to swallow down the saliva collecting in their mouth before any of it dribbled out. It was numbing, trying to read the symbols on the board. The letters, the numbers, the symbolsâthey danced about each other in waves, warped, without any pattern they could possibly comprehend. The overwhelmingness of it all sets in and their eyes glaze over, a tightness in their chest raising a feeling of dread.
Just short of screaming, theyâre pulled out of this state by a voice floating in their direction. Pulling themselves together, Reed turns to the student beside them whoâd leaned over. His words bring Reed some much-needed comfort. They smile at the boy, despite their watery eyes. They blink them dry.
âGot me,â Reed whispers and shrugs in response. âI canât even read any of it.â

askfrightfulfernâ:
Fern had the sneaking suspicion something was trailing her. She wasnât exactly hiding anything on today of all days, but the feeling of someoneâs eyes on her back was unwanted to say the least. Usually River was the only one willing to skip class with her, and students shouldnât be out of class while finals were goign on. Once in a fairly private place, the school garden, Fern spun around quickly on her heels, making eye contact with the kid floating behind her, too close for comfort, âBack off!â
@askreed
Though slow on the uptake when it comes to understanding socially acceptable behavior, Reed is quick to retract when their advances are unwanted by othersâwhich has happened enough times that theyâre not at all rattled by Fernâs confrontation. Reed smiles brightly in contrast, though their eyes are apologetic.
âSorry, broki. I kinda got wrapped up in all this energy you got up in your feels right now. Got me all trance-like, yâknow?â They werenât too sure how else to explain it, and understood that doing so would just make them sound intrusive. Reed canât exactly control it when they feel the whirling of emotions around them, but it feels like an invasion of privacy, all the same.
asklittlestsisterâ:
âItâs an expression. Like, âyou look like a million bucksâ, except not. I just meant why are you so energetic, but I didnât expect an answer,â She also didnât expect to have to explain herself, but Ingrid was starting to learn to put nothing past AKs, âThe gold thing is a metaphor too, itâs from a movie where this guy has a room full of gold coins, and swims in it, but yeah, itâs totally impossible.â
Looking at at the store window, Ingrid had to roll her eyes again. It was like money meant nothing to the people who had it, âWhatever, letâs blow this popsicle stand. Iâm sick of these yuppies.â
Reed blinks, drifting into their own mind for a moment to shuffle through the catalog of idioms theyâve learned. Ultimately deciding that this oneâs new, Reed tucks it into their mental collection. While this whole process doesnât take much longer than a ten seconds, an outside viewer would likely describe it as âzoning outâ.
âOhhh, yeah, I âmember! Itâs that show with the ducks!â Reed enthuses, the mental image of the rich duck man swimming through his pool of gold now forming in his mind. âI tried diving into sand once, and that wasnât easy. Canât imagine gold coins being any easier.â
Reed stops themselves from proclaiming that they love popsicles, realizing just in time that the girl hadnât meant that literally, either. âExcuse my ignorement, but whatâs a yuppie?â They always loved learning new words, preferably auditorily as they never were much of a reader.
asklittlestsisterâ:
Closed: Forget You
For @askreed
âDoes no one even realize not everyone has rooms of gold they can swim through like a pool?â Ingrid stared into the shop sheâd been âwindow-shoppingâ at with a gross frown. Though she had no envy for Auradon royals and had no problem stealing whatever she wanted, there was some sheer hate towards the elitist fashion stylings, and students milling around without caring about dropping $20 here and $50 there, âHavenât they ever heard of taste?â
She looked to her side to see a student with most pointless smile sheâd ever seen, âThere a reason you look like you were struck by lightning?â
âCan peeps actually do that? Like, wouldnât you hurt your head on all that gold?â Reed chimes in, not responding to her question directed at them at firstânot because they're ignoring it, but because their mind is pretty one-track on the idea of swimming in pools of gold at the moment. And on all of the pretty, colorful clothes displayed in the windows of the shops.
âLightning? Wouldnât I be in the emer-emerge...in the the E.R. if that happened?â Reed queries, not understanding her euphemism.

askhornedprincessâ:
Rhedyn stared down at the jewelry, deciding itâs place of origin mustâve been off the Isle. Likely something made by an Auradonian craftsman and then thrown out carelessly, âYes, it is aesthetically pleasing, however the chip on the second stone implies damage was dealt during itâs transfer to the Isle. Likely worth much less not that it is partially broken, and worth almost nothing here since we donât find use in superficial style elements. Perhaps a Tremaine or Grimhelde would like it.â
She found herself a little flustered with the nickname again, but didnât say anything against it. As for finding interesting things in the dump⌠Rhedyn preferred most people to not find her familyâs old books, âI prefer not to go digging through trash, no matter how men may consider it âtreasuresâ.â
âIâunno, I like that it has this lilâ chip on it. Makes it look organic, yâknow? Real naturalism, real characterisms,â Reed comments, trying to sound smarter with longer words, one of which is used wrong and the other not being an actual word. Not that Reed would know.
âOh, cool! Maybe you can introduce me to âem?â they ask, as Rhedyn mentions a couple names. As much as Reed tried, they couldnât quite start a conversation with any of the locals on the Isle. Perhaps Rhedyn could help with that? âI feel like I keep offendinâ folks here. I get bad vibes wheneva I try and say hello. Maybe you intro-ing me around could help?â
Reed scratches their head, and shrugs. âWell, I donât think itâs meant to be treasure for all folks. Guess thatâs why itâs here, huh?â They reach down and pick up an old book, squinting at the title, trying to read it. âHmm, whatâs this book about?â
