Ruth made her way up the walkway to the frankly imposing mansion. Her bags in each hand.
It wasn’t often that she got such an interesting job offer. She had worked for years as a caretaker for people with special needs. And had gone to college to get her nursing degree.
She knew enough about mutants from some of the people she had worked with. And had written a very good paper about mutations and those who had to live with them. She supposed that was why Charles had contacted her.
One of the kids got the door for her. “Here lemme help. Im Jubilee. You’re Logan’s new nurse right?”
“I am. My name is Ruth. Nice to meet you Jubilee.” She replies with a soft smile.
“Good luck. He was a grump before… well you know… Anyway I gotta get to class. Bye!” The girl chirps as the bell rings.
Ruth heads inside. Not super sure which way to go.
@muses-under-the-bed
“Excuse me, are you Nurse Barnes?” A muscular man covered in blue fur asked walking up to her. “I’m Dr. Hank McCoy, if you’ll follow me please.” He said quickly as he guided her down a hallway to a wall, the wall sliding away to reveal a high tech elevator. “You arrived just in time, your patient just woke up.”
“Nice to meet you Doctor. Should I leave my bags?” Ruth asks.
If she’s surprised by his appearance she does a fantastic job of hiding it. She focuses on his eyes as she speaks to him.
Her eyebrows do raise as she looks at the elevator though.
“Yes, they’ll be taken to the room we set aside for you.” Hank said stepping into the elevator.
“We’ve had to keep him restrained in the med bay, down in the subbasement. Ever since he got injured he’s been…quicker to anger than before. Even our telepaths are having a difficult time calming him down.” Hank explained somberly. “Logan usually heals quickly, but he keeps thrashing about in his rages, his body’s not healing as fast as it should.”
“Well if some jerk ripped your bones out I’m sure you would be pretty upset too doctor.” Ruth replies.
She nods though. “And I’m assuming sedatives aren’t working that well?”
“Fair, I’m just thankful that Logan pulled through. I’ve never seen his heart rate drop that low, at least, not without him growing a new heart.” Hank sighed as the elevator descended.
“No. What truly scare me is the foam.” Hank answered. “He’s foaming at the mouth, if he didn’t have immunity thanks to his mutation, I’d almost think he’s rabid.” He says as the doors open. Even through the soundproofed walls and doors, frenzied yelling and roaring can be heard.
Hank moves quickly down the corridor and opens a door. In the med bay, retrained to a bed, is Logan. Thrashing around, his eyes radiating a frenzied anger, bone-like claws extended from his retrained hands, and his body covered in bandages.
“Foam?!” Ruth explains.
She puts a hand over her heart as she hears the screaming.
“Something like this happened to him before. He’s trapped in those memories.” She remarks.
“I’ve seen something similar before. I’ve worked with a few soldiers… may I go in?”
“Yes please.” Hank said as he rushed to Logan’s bedside. “Logan, it’s me, it’s Hank, can you hear me?” He asked. A frenzied growl was the only response as Logan attempted to move his arms to slash and stab Hank.
Ruth enters the room. Takes one look at how Hank approaches him and gets irritated herself.
“Get out.” She says. Moving to the foot of the bed. Her voice is commanding. “He’s not a child Hank. Stop treating him like one…”
Instinct tells her he won’t hurt her. Not if she shocks him. An idea forms.
Hank looks offended, sees the look on her face, and sighs. “I’ll leave you to it, but I’ll be at my workstation if you need me.” He said going to a desk at the far side of the room, leaps up to the ceiling, and starts running some experiments while upside down.
Logan’s looking at her warily. Like an injured animal.
She watches Hank. And as soon as his back is turned she sighs. Putting her knee up on the bed in between Logan’s legs. She then locks eyes with Logan. Softening her eyes as she climbs up on top of him. Keeping her weight off his body.
With the way his arms are strapped down it’s really the only way to properly avoid the claws.
She moves till her face is above his. And then gently moves a hand through his hair.
“Hello Wolverine… I’m here to help.” She says softly.
He’s not Logan right now she can tell.
Wolverine looks at her, then snarls and growls at her. Like how an injured cat hisses, or a dog growls. Foam forms at the corners of his mouth.
She doesn’t move. Doesn’t show any sign of fear. Not even her scent changes. She watches him carefully.
She allows him to get used to her scent. Still playing softly with his hair. Her eyes are soft too. Holding no malice for him. No fear. Only understanding.
He snarls, then gradually, his breathing evens out, and the animalistic fury in his eyes slowly changes to intelligence. The claws slowly retract.
“There you are. I’m not going to hurt you.” She says softly.
“Hank could you dim the lights a bit. These fluorescents are hellish.” Ruth comments.
“Also a blanket from his room. The smells here are too medical. Not safe.”
She stays there hovering over top of Logan.
“You’re safe now. I won’t be letting anyone hurt you. Alright?” She asks.
Hank turns around to do that, and sees her lying on top of Logan. “I swear he must give off some kind of pheromone.” Hank muttered under his breath as he left, the lights dimming as he does so.
“Who…who are you?” Logan croaks out after a minute. “What…happened? Hurts…”
“My name is Ruth. I’m your nurse. The professor hired me.” She replies. “I’m gunna get off you now.”
“You angered an asshole who controls metal and he ripped the metal from off your bones.” She says softly as she carefully moves off of him.
“Can I get you anything? Water? Food?” She asks. “Your healing factor should kick in now that you’re more still…”
“…Magneto…stabbed him.” He growled, looking proud of himself. “Asshat…deserved it.”
“Starved. And thirsty.” He admits, it sounds like his throat is healing up from both the injuries, and the yelling.
“Alright. I’ll see if I can find you some water… and I’ll send Hank out for food as soon as he gets back.” She remarks as she moves to take off her jacket.
The energy in the room gets more soothing.
“So I hear you’re also imported. The professor is very proud of his Canadian teammate.” Ruth says as she heads towards the water cooler.
As she moves away the comfort lessens slightly. But when she returns it’s back in full force.
“Here. I’ll undo your restraints so you can get a drink.” She sets the cup down and moves to his arm to unbelt the cuff.
The claws were out again when she walked away, and they were still slowly retracting when she moved to undo his restraints. “Thanks darlin’.” He said gratefully. “Don’t think I got your name.”
Her heartbeat picks up as he calls her Darlin’ she’s glad for the dimmed lights hoping he can’t see her blush.
“Ruth. Ruth Barnes.” She replies. “And you are?”
She knew of course but she wanted to be polite.
She releases his arms and then hands him the cup of water.
Logan chuckles to himself as he takes a drink. Oh yeah, he’s calling her that more. “Logan.” He introduced himself once he was done.
“Can I ask you for a favor?” He started after a moment. “I can’t feel my legs yet, but I want some fresh air, there a spare wheelchair I can use, and can you help me get in it?”
“Nice to meet you Logan.” She replies taking the empty cup when he was finished.
“Uh you know what I have no idea. I can snoop around though. I quite literally just got here…” she says setting the cup down on a nearby counter and scanning the room.
“Can you wait till Hank returns? He would be the guy to ask and he’s coming with a blanket from your room. Which would be good because the kids might be a little upset by your bandages.”
“Yeah, fair enough.” Logan says somberly.
A minute later the door whooshes open and Hank walks in. “Oh my star and garters.” He says seeing Logan sitting up, unrestrained, and not attacking anyone.
“Hey fur face.” Logan says giving a slight wave. The wind is immediately knocked out of him as Hank pulls him into a bone crushing hug.
“You scared us old friend.” Hank said, tears rolling down the fur on his face.
“Can’t…breathe…bones…very…breakable…” Logan groaned out.
“Oh, sorry.” Hank apologized setting Logan down. “And thank you Nurse Barnes. Whatever you did, seems to have worked.”
“You wear garters? That’s not a mental image I needed.” Ruth retorts.
Her eyes widen in horror as Hank hugs him. And she hears the bones crack.
“Damn Hank. Respectfully. Never hug me.” She mutters.
“You’re welcome. We were wondering about a spare wheelchair. Logan would like some air.”
“Yeah Hank, don’t talk about your garters.” Logan teased.
“You know fully well that I’m referencing a play, and the highest rank of English knighthood!” Hank said defensively to Logan.
Hank then sighs, goes over to a locker, and pulls out a folding wheelchair. “Just be careful Logan.” He said picking Logan up, and setting him down in the chair, and tucking his legs in with the blanket he brought down. Also handing Logan a sweatshirt.
“I’ll be fine.” Logan said putting the shirt on. “I got Ruth here to help.”
Ruth made her way up the walkway to the frankly imposing mansion. Her bags in each hand.

“Good luck. He was a grump before… well you know… Anyway I gotta get to class. Bye!” The girl chirps as the bell rings.
Ruth heads inside. Not super sure which way to go.

Stupid multiverse. One minute he was chilling, cold beer in hand, enjoying a nice summer’s day, the next he landed in an active war zone with his X-Men suit on, and now he’s captured by the government.,.again! He’s glaring at a woman who introduced herself as Waller, which caused Logan to snicker because she looks as wide as a wall, and now he’s suited back up and in a helicopter being sent on a suicide mission sitting next to a girl who looked waaaaaaay too happy to be here.

Harley gave the new guy an elevator glance. “Hiya… I’m Harley…” she offers him a hand. Her fingernails are painted red and black.
“You’re new! Welcome to the party~” her accent was clearly a brooklyn accent. “So who’s you piss off to end up here?” She gives him a dazzling smile. Her eyes are wary scrutinizing him. But this is hidden behind a friendly veneer.
Logan chuckles. “I’ll either hold on to whatever you don’t want his blood on for ya, or tear him apart myself for ya.” He answers honestly.
He can tell that at the mention of his kids he struck a nerve. So he decided to change the subject. “I assume everyone on this team has a record then, you included, but I’m wondering what you did before you became a super villain, if it’s not a touchy subject.”
“Nice!” She smiles. One point Harley.
“Oh yeah. For sure. Just recently I got road rage… in a bank…” she replies with a grin. Then the grin falls.
“S’ actually how I got into crime… hold up… you sayin you don’t know who I am?! Seriously? I mean… I’m the Harley Quinn… I’m the one who…” she sighs heavily. “The Joker’s girl? You know. Great big smile. Wears lipstick? Blows kids up? Killed Robin? Ain’t this timing any bells. You guys ain’t got tv in Canada?” She frowns.
“We do, but when you spend most of your free time in the wild, or in another universe, some info changes.” He admits with a shrug.
“Another- universe?” Harley is quiet a moment. “Don’t tell me…You’ve never heard of Superman? Or Gotham? Or Batman? Or New York?”
“Most heroes in my universe are strangely based in New York.” Logan says thoughtfully. “There’s the team I’m in, the X-Men. Spider-Man, DareDevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist handle the street level stuff. Doctor Strange has his weird magic house there. Captain America lives in Brooklyn but he’s usually found in DC if he’s not overseas. And then there’s the Fantastic Four and the Avengers.” He listed. “Iron Man also tends to fly by if someone’s trying to steal some tech from one of his research centers in New York.”
“You’re from another universe… huh… I think I get the appeal now Flag.” Harley replies honestly.
She thinks a moment. “Sorry- too soon. I hope you’re doing ok by the way. If you need a hug later let me know.”
“Okay. So- basically. I was a physiatriss. And I was assigned to the Joker. Nobody knows who he really is or nothin’ but he gave me a phoney story and I fell for it after a while and… I feel for him… head over heels into a vat of acid… and after I was reborn into Harley Quinn. Helped him beat up a vigilante. Did a bunch of petty theft. Couple o’ grand thefts too. Acts of terrorism. Yadda yadda. Went straight a while. Got right back into it with him. And then realized he saw me as a tool not a person.” She sighs.
“Too me too f^ckin long. So I’m sorta stuck. And now. I also got a bomb in my neck. But the hood news is. We get time off our sentence with every completed mission. And last time I got an espresso machine too!” She smiles.
“Nice. Hope they let me try some. Though I do like a splash of whiskey in my espresso.” Logan chuckles. “But if I get a perk from this mission, it’s booze and cigars. I don’t care how cheap they are.”
“You wondered why I used the word mutant earlier instead of, what was the phrase you said? Metahuman? On my earth there’s two kinds of super powered beings…usually. Super powered humans to be specific I guess. Mutants and mutates. Mutates get their powers from lab accidents or from being a science experiment, like when they injected Captain America with the first super soldier serum, or when Spider-Man got his powers from a radioactive spider biting him.” Logan explained. He then sighed. “Then there’s us mutants. We’re born with our powers but they show up around the time we start puberty. The world hates and fears us because they don’t understand us, they’re afraid we’ll use our powers to do whatever we want, so despite the fact that we’re the next step in human evolution, there’s humans who will do anything to kill us all. And that where the X-Men come in. We protect mutant-kind from the weapons humans make, without killing humans to show restraint, and help capture the mutants who use their powers to hurt others.”
“Oh they keep me in solitary unless Ivy is also in prison. It’s not like we can walk around.” Harley replies.
“So I’m gunna assume that the only people who care about the distinction are the mutants and mutates? Cuz those that ain’t affected just hate those that are?” Harley asks.
“By those definitions I’d be a mutate.” She muses as they make their way through the trees.
Logan shrugs. “I guess. Never really mattered to me. What matters to me is your strength of character, and your honor.” He says cutting some of the thicker foliage. “Even back in World War II, when I worked with Captain America to free the people locked in camps.”
After a bit they came across a stream full of clean water. “Oh thank god, was getting thirsty.” Logan muttered, getting on all fours and drinking from the stream like an animal.
Harley chuckles and walks over to pet the top of his mask.
Only after he’s done does she dip her hand in to scoop up some water for herself.
“So your kids are back home then? How old are they? What are their names?”
Logan almost made a purring sound when Harley pets the top of his cowl.
He sits down and wipes his mouth before answering. “There’s Akihiro, he’s in his 80’s but still looks like he’s in his 20’s cause of the powers he inherited from me. Laura’s fourteen. Pray for her, she’s a teenage girl with my powers and attitude. There’s Gabrielle who’s nine, and Amiko, who I’ve adopted.” Logan listed.
“‘Course if we’re counting adopted kids then I gotta mention two more. Rogue and Jubilee. Rogue was a runaway when I met her, she kissed a boy and her powers developed, causing him to spend the next week in the hospital. She absorbs life energy and powers through skin contact, more of a curse than anything else. And Jubilee ran away from her foster parents when she heard them arguing over whether or not they should turn her in because she can shoot what are basically fireworks out of her fingertips.” He added with a thoughtful hum.
Harley’s eyes soften a bit listening to him talk about his kids.
And he was open to adopting.
There has to be a catch. But it really didn’t matter. He was useful. Knife hands. He could dig this f^ckin bomb outta her neck and if he f^cked up. There was the Lazarus pit.
“It’s so refreshing to hear about a meta who actually cares about kids… I gotta stop lookin’ for men in the asylum… anyway… wait. Do you hear that?”
She starts signing in sign language.
[Shhh. Do you know sign?]
Tree cover overhead would stop the satellite from seeing them.
Logan tilts his head, listening for something. When he recognizes what she’s doing with her hands he smirks. “Yeah, there’s a patrol. Larger than the last one, let’s avoid it.” He lied lyingly, and convincingly.
[Yeah, assuming you don’t want Waller to listen in?] He signed back smirking at her. He then pulled her deeper into the trees.
Harley bites her lip. Signing.
[get this bomb out of my neck. If you f^ck up I can go in the pit. I’ll make it worth your while. Anything you want…]
She hesitates looking into his eyes.
[I have a secret daughter to get home to.]
Logan nodded. [Let’s do it next to the pit, that way you can be put in there quickly if we need to.] He suggested.
“I think they’re gone…” Harley whispers, nodding. “But that’s gotta be their Fort…” she points on the horizon to the shape of a building.
She blows him a kiss without making the noise.
Logan smirks at her as she blew the kiss. If he’s honest with himself, he’s starting to fall for her. “Here Doll, let me lead the way.” He said extending his claws so that they can cut through the foliage.
At the fortress it’s clear it’s built into the peak of a tall mountain, with no entrance at their level. “Guess we gotta climb up.” Logan said looking up at the nearest window. “Get on my back, I can climb with you on me.” He said stabbing the cliff face and climbing up a few inches to make it easier for her.
“Oh that’s nothin. Race ya!” Harley replies. And in a few graceful flips she’s parkoured her way up to the window. And she’s working on opening it. She sends a smile down at him.
Logan is right behind her. He’s a surprisingly fast climber. “Here, let me.” He said extending a single claw. He then cuts a perfect circle in the mirror, uses it to reach through and unlock the window, then opens it. “After you.”
“Oh my gawsh. Handsome and a gentleman!” She exclaims. Hand over her nonexistent pearls.
What’s the catch? There’s gotta be one…whatever. Unimportant.
She slips in through the window and is immediately on guard.
“The goop pit is in the main room… like a f^cked up swimmin’ pool…” she whispers.
“You know full well, Dr. Quinzel, that it’s called a Lazarus Pit, not a goop pit.” Ra’s Al Ghul said tuning on the light next to him. They had entered through his private library.
Logan stood between them, got into his fighting stance, and extended his claws.
“Peace, I’m not looking for a fight.” Ra’s said holding up a hand.
