The Dormouse: *calmly peers out window*

Hare: It’s okay Dormy, don’t worry about it.  HATTER! THERE’S A WEIRD FUCKIN’ STRAY CAT OUTSIDE IT LOOKS LIKE GRANDMA THE FUCKIN’ THING!

“I see Alice as a very distinct character who has a voice in the discussion about the way she’s presented. It’s obvious to me that putting her in “sexy” clothes would be at odds with the origin story I created for her. She’s been victimized and objectified by a sexual deviant. Having her dressed in revealing clothing would undermine the powerful story of Alice as an individual using her wits and imagination to overcome psychological trauma.

Same goes for representing her as an uncaring sociopath who, without justification, goes around murdering random people. The idea of an insane and out of control Alice violates the core narrative, theme, and nature of the story being told. She’s not insane, nor is she uncaring. She’s been shattered, yes, but she’s working conscientiously to put the pieces back together. In the first game she’s doing this for herself. In the second she accepts responsibility for others (children) who have suffered similar injustices. She’s not seeking revenge at any cost. She’s seeking to regain her sense of self and find closure.”

Truth is, I’ve never “controlled” Alice. She has a life of her own, expressed through the writing, drawing, animation and coding of all the people who’ve ever worked on the games. I believe they “know” her, as you do, as I do… because she’s taken on a life of her own. That’s the power of her story and her nature. It derives from how she’s spoken for a group of people who need this type of story told.”

When you sexualize Alice, you are the story’s villains. You are only seeking to exploit and gain pleasure from the idea of Alice. Everything else is irrelevant.

When you demonize Alice, you are the story’s ignorant, sensationalist masses. You want nothing more than to entertain yourselves with the idea of an edgy, one-dimensional monster. You find thrill in the aesthetic, or you enjoy projecting your ill-informed ideas about traumatized and psychotic people into a place of fiction where nobody will correct you.
