Oblivious to his surroundings, the Once-ler strolled through the forest, and stopped at a perfect looking tree. He reached up and attempted to reach the fluff of the Truffula, but couldn't. He didn't quite feel like going into town to get supplies, and he wanted a Truffula fruit and some material to knit a super soft blanket, perhaps some wood to make a fire with, if only so he could lay outside and look up at the stars. He took his axe and put it to the tree, quickly chipping away at the bark. It fell with a loud bang, the oblivious man grinning in victory, and he dragged the tree towards his home, happily whistling a tune under his breath. He quickly plucked the fruits from the fallen tree and took them into his house, setting them in the sink and grabbing a bag, before going back out and picking the fluff off. He failed to notice the rapidly darkening sky and the flash of lightning that struck the stump of the tree. He did, however, notice when an orange furry creature popped out in front of him.
"I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees. I'm the Guardian of the Forest. Are you the one that chopped this tree down?" He wasn't large, but he was rather angry looking, and the fact that he could talk was very startling.
The Once-ler jumped back. "I-uh yes? I'm sorry, was I not supposed to?"
The Lorax huffed and growled at him. "No, you weren't. Plus you knocked over a nest of the Swomee Swan's. Pay more attention you...you... Bean Pole!"
The man flinched, and nodded. "Are they okay? I really didn't mean for that to happen. I just wanted the Truffula fluff for some material....and the fruit...and the wood to make a fire...."
The Lorax glared at him. "WELL DON'T DO IT AGAIN! Sorry doesn't make homes come back! Just remember, I'm watchin' you!" The small orange creature whirled around and stomped off into the woods, leaving the tall man behind him very confused.
