I was dead a year ago. I was dead.
First time?
Always a struggle, how's the paperwork treating you? Or have you not bothered legally un-dying.
I- no actually. My second time.
Im not bothering with it. If I did I'd be forced back into sticky situations, I'd rather not. Besides, I got my lovely wife back.
Lucky you.
I assume you have experience with it, too?
Quite, unfortunately.
When working for any of the megacorps on this so-called "corporate frontier", I'd argue that is the one thing we all grow intimately familiar with.
Ah... I'm sorry. That sounds awful.
I used to be a hero, and was killed while I was working. It'd be too much of a public scandal if I came back.
Eh. Better than where I was before.
How was hero work?
It was... fine. I joined to be a better person, fight crime and be a hero. That stuff. I didn't care what I was doing in the name of justice. I have some regrets.

I was dead a year ago. I was dead.
*The two practically danced around each other as they cooked. Meal prepping for the next week or so. Using a mixture of food they received at a food pantry and their limited income. But it was a song and dance they enjoyed.*
*Lizzie would drain the water for her pasta at the same time Joel would mash mix ground beef with pasta sauce.*
*It all would end up in cheap Tupperware containers, stacked up in the fridge.*
*But it was an ounce of desperately needed normalcy. They'd end the meal prepping with just simple sandwiches to eat that night. Sat next to each other on the kitchen floor. They didn't have the time nor money for much furniture yet.*
*But they didn't need it.*
*Lizzie would rest the side of her head against Joel's. And it felt like their first date. Sitting next to each other, leaning on the other, watching the sunset.*
*There was no sun set here. But they didn't need it.*
*They'd wash the dishes together, and tell each other about their day. Leaving them to air dry before meeting each other in bed.*
*They could get used to this. They both think. Even if the bed squeeks and is uncomfortable. They could hold each other. And that was all.*
*Joel knew he'd wake up in the morning before her. Before the sun had risen. His nonexistent heart rapidly beating, because he'd forgotten about his patrol!*
*But he'd remember. Like he always did. And go back to sleep.*
*And Lizzie knew she'd toss and turn in the night. Plagued by the image of her husband dying, or being brainwashed.*
*But she'd wake up, and smile. Then fall back asleep to memories of better times.*
*They had all they needed.*
I love cooking with my wife.
Mmmmmmmy wiiiiiife
*Taurtis is wandering around the city, looking for a new job. He had been working at a cafe but got fired when he didnt have any of the proper paperwork to show he lived in the city. He's just looking for somewhere to spend the night before heading back into the job hunt.*
I like your horns, they're really cool!
*Taurtis greets Herocles. He's heading into the library and sees the man. He doesn't recognize him, but he seems cool.*
@ask-yhs-taurtis
*Herocles perks up a little from the book he was reading over mythology. Greeting the new person with a smile and nod. His glasses help hide his dead eyes.*
Oh- thank you, young man. Thats very kind of you. Could I help you with anything?
*He'd gotten this job a few weeks ago. Yes he technically doesn't have the proper paperwork, but nobody has to know the old couple running it are just paying him cash under the counter.*
Do you work here? I'm looking for resources for job opportunities in the area, and thought this would be a good place to check. I'm new in town.
Yup I do. And... I could get you in contact with the owners? I don't think we're hiring right now, but I am the only employee so I could be wrong? I know we do have places where you can talk to job finders around the city, if that helps.
Ah, that's okay.
Does this city have a job center, or something similar? Or like- a bulletin board advertising help needed? I can do manual labor.
I'm... not sure. Not any good ones. I can give the owners your number? If you want to do a quick interview or anything. They can pay under the counter if needed.
That would be fantastic, thank you.
*He looks startled for a second, but tries to neutralize his expression. Did he get clocked this quickly? Maybe this guy was just super chill. Weirdly chill.*
Oh- okay. That may be- cough -useful.
Yeah. I know a lot of people here are like... refugees, or orphans, or both. Makes getting a fully legal job hard.
*He grabs a paper and fancy looking pen, writeing down a little bit on it.*
If you wanna take a seat somewhere, feel free.
It's, uh, good to know that you're cool with that. I've met some people here that really aren't. Its why I'm in the job market again, really.
*He sits down next to the man.*
I'm Taurtis, by the way.
Ahh. Yeah. Some people suck sometimes. Not much I can do about it.
*Joel scribbles down some questions, and writes Taurtis's name.*
Got it. Call me Joel. Uhm... how good are you with organizing, or computers?
Nice to meet you, Joel!
I'm great with computers. 'Did a lot of work on them in my free time back home. Building, coding, all that.
I see, I see. Thats good. The computer system here to track what books are checked out is pretty old.
What kind of education do you have? Like, I do have a bachelor's degree, just not in anything library or book related.
I bet i could help with that.
Just high school, at this point. I want to go to college but I... moved... before I could really get that planned out.
*He fidgets with his headphones nervously. After High School, he had intended to get a degree in computer science. But then he had woken up in Evo, and his plans were messed up."
*He nods, clicking his tounge.*
Ahh...I see. Happens to the best of us.
*So this is a refugee then. Did high school. Thats at least better than some heros.*
How long do you think you'd work here?
A while. I'm looking to stay here permanently, but might work my way up the job market a bit. The- what was it? Hero agency? I had heard they were hiring but I couldn't find anybody inside to talk to. Might head back there, though, since from what ive heard the pay is good.
Got it... got-
*Herocles briefly panics, eyes widening, tensing.*
No! No. Sorry- I- I wouldn't do that if I were you- hah- terrible work life balance.
Uh... okay. Yeah, ill stay away from that then.
*He's instantly suspiscious, obviously. But he has his own secrets that he doesnt want to be pried out of him, so he'll stay away from whatever Joel is hiding.*
Wouldn't want a bad... work life balance...
Yeah I- uh- I had... family that worked there. Family. It wasn't good. Would not recommend.
*Joel chuckles nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.*
*Taurtis squints a bit.*
M'kay. I'll stay away from that, then. Thanks for the warning?
Ah- lets get- uhm- back to the interview. What kinda pay would you be looking for?
*Bro is still feeling so on edge but hes gotta play it cool.*
I don't need too much at the moment. Just enough for rent. I'm cool with... 10 dollars an hour?
Mhm... mhm...
*He jots that down.*
What do you like to do in your free time? Like I like to bake or spend time with my wife.
I like computers, and gaming. Stuff like that. I left all of my stuff back at home though. Oh- I can crochet! If i get the materials.
Oh thats cool! Very nice.
Uhm... how much do you like books?
I don't read a lot anymore. I read a ton before I got... busy... in high school. But I can read just fine and i'd like to get back into it
Oh yeah, if they accept you then you'll have plenty of time to read. They've got a pretty good historical fiction section here.
Cool, cool. I'd like to learn more about this world- er, city. Y'know, new guy, moved here in a completely normal way that shouldn't be questioned, fully knows why he's here, all that stuff. Heh.
*He has a fake smile on.*
I assume you're... a cool guy. But in case youre some sort of government official or police officer, just forget I said anything. Everything is FINE!
Oh no dont worry I get what you mean. I am the coolest guy and getting you in trouble would only get me so we're buddies there.
*He chuckles.*
But uh... what do you want to know? I can try to answer.
Cool, cool, good to know.
Maybe we can chat about that in a less public space. Its just- the place I'm from doesnt quite work like this place. Everything is magical, and not quite in a good way.
Oh! I've heard of that. World hoppers. Or maybe just people not from the city. The control that mushroom lady has over the fungus has to be magical. And I know they're not from the city. I get you.
*Taurtis glances around a bit, looking to see if anybody is listening in on their conversation.*
Could we- uh, moved this inside? Sorry, I've had some bad interactions and don't like to let people know of my 'origins'. Again, sorry. I can leave. I shouldn't get you all involved.
*Joel nods a little, holding open a door.*
Oh- uh- sure. I suppose. I don't know what I'm getting myself into, do I? Hah.
I promise I'm not evil or anything! I can work just fine and I will act completely normal around other people.
I'm glad I ran into you, out of everybody in this city. You have your background, I have mine, I wont ask.
We all have our own pasts and horrors of our own. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. I trust you're fine around people, heh. Just say you're new to the city and it'll brush off any suspicions.
*Taurtis seems to relax a bit as he exits the sunlight and gets into the artificial lighting of the building. His clear social anxiety is still present, but something else has been lifted off his shoulders.*
Would you know how to get some sort of ID? Or passport? Do you guys have passports here?
Uhm... if you have a birth certificate of yourself, you can get thoes. But you really just need the birth certificate, or social security card. You could always get a fake one.
*Joel shrugs. He'd tried to get one, but he'd rather not be known. Even if that means struggling for a while, its better than getting caught again.*
I don't have any sort of that with me. All got left behind when I was brought here. I can kinda explain. I lived in a place called Japan, then there's some holes, and then I woke up in a new place. Lived there for a bit, but got brought here instead of where I was intending to go.
Ahhh, I see. Left all that behind. Happens somtimes. I... don't know how that'd get fixed, though. I'm sorry. But I can relate.
I was here initially, made some... regrettable actions. Left against my will. Returned, and am just kinda... lost. So I get you.
...I like you a lot. We're similar. Next you're going to tell me you're basically a zombie too, heh!
*Herocles stiffens. Blinking. Before removing his glasses, his eyes completely lifeless.*
Well you see- thats actually kinda the least of my problems.
Shit, really?
*Taurtis steps back. He has no way to prove his lack of life, unless Joel were to try to take his pulse.*
Wait- did you come from Evo too? Are you dead from that too? Do you know how you're unliving?
Evo? No. I died here in this city. Came back with some magic stuff, but it didn't fully bring me back or something.
*Joel puts back on the fake glasses, and gives a confused look at Taurtis.*
What I did isnt normal here, by the way. I wouldn't go around telling people you're undead.
...ah.
*Another dead end, no pun intended.*
Isn't normal where I'm from either. I should probably shut up.
No I'm... I'm curious. Me and my wife were both revived. But she came back normal. Or- as normal as you can be after having been a ghost for a few years. But like... her heart beats, her skin can flush. Mine doesn't.
Do you really know nothing of what happened to you?
Your wife is dead too? That's interesting.
I had a unhealthy high school experience, to say the least. I don't know exactly how I died but I have a few suspicious. I have no memory of my death though. I didn't come back injured. Not sure if this is even my original body. I mean, I crawled out of the ground. Classic zombie crap.
Was dead. Revived same time with me.
Huh... well the crawling out of the ground is kind of funny. But thats weird. At least, I think so. I remember everything, perhaps all too clearly. Aside from a little bit after my death.
Do you still need to do stuff to live? Like eat, sleep, breath?
That's kinda nice. The two of you can spend more time together than you originally could.
Funny in retrospect, not at the time. I wake up with my lungs full of dirt, claw out of the ground and find myself under an altar covered in flowers and carved to look like my face. Terrifying shit.
I don't breathe or sleep, but I eat a bit. Not too hungry ever. Meat is really the only appealing food now.
... Dude thats horrifying. Are you sure you're not the protagonist- or antagonist- of like... a horror movie???
That is fucked man... dude...
Ah- but yeah. I'm similar. Don't breath or sleep or eat. I could if I wanted to. I dont know if I can be knocked out... but I dont think I have a heart. At all.
I know, right? My friend Grian was there, and I met some other new friends, but none of them seemed to think it was weird. I still don't know what that was about.
Is that how you died? Heart cut out? Thats... not great.
That's odd... maybe thwy had some hand in it? Or something?
Nope. My heart was replaced before it, it just didn't come back with me. I had my throat slit. Would not recommend. 2/10 stars.
Maybe. He got... weird. But then he vanished and I came here and- it's a whole thing.
Holy... god. Wow. I'm glad I don't remember, then. I'm sorry, dude. You're a really nice guy, that shouldn't have happened to you.
Huh... thats... weird. More than weird.
Yeah it's really not fun. Only thing worse than it is probably... burning to death. If I had to imagine. It at least did make it easier for the living to see me while I was a ghost.
I'll chat with Grian about it if I ever find him again.
Oh, yeah. That would be horrible. I think drowning would also be bad. What was being a ghost like?
That sounds like it'd be wise. Whoever this Grian person is.
Eh, maybe. Getting your throat slit is kinda similar to drowning. You drown on your own blood before you bleed out.
Being a ghost... wasn't too bad. I guess. When things got too much. Like I was overwhelmed, I just... turned into mist. I could see other ghosts, too. But the living couldn't see me unless I really wanted to be seen. I don't think it was the permanent after life. Just a place for souls to stay before they're ready to go. I think.
Eughh... I didn't need to know that...
*He thinks back to the ghosts he saw back at school. This place seemed to have different rules about all of that.*
Are there a lot of ghosts here?
Heh, sorry.
Uhm...
*Herocles looks out the window. At seemingly nothing. Before back at Taurtis.*
I'd say so. But not really any malevolent ones. Big emotions just lead to breaking. Most are people sticking around with their loved ones. Waiting for their partner, or just watching the family.
*Taurtis follows Herocles's gaze. He doesnt see anything, but squints in the sunlight. Hurts his eyes a lot more than before, for some reason.*
That's sweet. Even in death, love prevails. Ooooh, I could be a poet! Heh.
Yeah. There's a few unhappy ones. But really... if all your business is finished, you can leave. It seems. I don't know why I couldn't when I was a ghost.
*He shrugs.*
Can you see them?
Maybe you had unfinished buisness?
No, I can't. Well- there was a ghost in the place i came from. But I think that was a different sort of thing. I can't see the ones here.
I must have...
I see. Literally and metaphorically, heh. What was the ghost where you were from like? Im guessing vengeful, scary, blood dripping from the roof kinda ghost?
Yeah. I'm still not really sure if it was real, though. Weird time. Lots of stuff happened. He could have just been another part of the web I was stuck in.
*He looks down at the ground and scuffs his boot back and fourth across the floor. Sore topic, maybe?*
This was before all of my world hopping happened, and before I died.
*Joel nods a little. Looking back outside at the seemingly nothing.*
Yeah, dying can really throw a wrench into things. I was in a terrible situation before I died, death took me away. But now im just avoiding going back.
I hope you get it all figured out. I'm glad you're back, and I'm glad you got away from what hurt you before.
How'd you get a job at this place? Do they know who you are 'n stuff?
Lets hope so. And thanks, I hope you do too.
Oh- no. They know I cant be paid legally. The owners are just two old ladies, they cant run the place much anymore. So they pay me and I run it for them.
That's sweet. I'd like to settle down like that eventually. Does your wife work here too?
Nah. I wish though. She's a cook at a homeless center. She actually has a chance of reclaiming her life, getting her official documents back. Then she'll work somwhere else. Likely still in the food industry.
Back before she died, we ran a cafe. We'd take turns baking and maning the front.
Oh! Good for her. I was just working at a café, before I got... thrown back into the job market. I had a couple crappy minimum wage jobs back home, but it was hard to pin down a job with everything happening. I had to get the money to get by through other stuff, like computer hardware repair jobs. So- uh, if this place needs a revamped system, I can do that.
Heh, if we start a new cafe just come to us. But yeah, I'll talk to the owners. I think they'll like you.
That would be awesome.
I should probably get going. I hope this place works out because I like you a lot, but ill throw my name towards a couple of other spots in case it doesn't. Thanks a million, Joel.
Yup! No problem at all. I'll get bavk to you if this works out. But if it doesn't, good luck at the other places!
*He gives a thumbs up.*
*Taurtis is wandering around the city, looking for a new job. He had been working at a cafe but got fired when he didnt have any of the proper paperwork to show he lived in the city. He's just looking for somewhere to spend the night before heading back into the job hunt.*

@ask-yhs-taurtis

@ask-yhs-taurtis

*Taurtis is wandering around the city, looking for a new job. He had been working at a cafe but got fired when he didnt have any of the proper paperwork to show he lived in the city. He's just looking for somewhere to spend the night before heading back into the job hunt.*
I like your horns, they're really cool!
*Taurtis greets Herocles. He's heading into the library and sees the man. He doesn't recognize him, but he seems cool.*
@ask-yhs-taurtis
Thats... not great.

I think.
