They are made of very tough keratin, denser than that of human fingernails. It allows them to repair themselves when damaged in battle.

Tarkatan are technically not humans but I can see why Earthrealmers would be uncomfortable with the thought of eating them. However meat is sustenance. We eat to live so we can fight our battles. I have eaten other animals but smaller bones get stuck in my teeth.
