At first glance, Guy Gardner is exactly what everyone expects him to be: arrogant, obnoxious, brash, competitive, and incapable of keeping his mouth shut for more than thirty seconds.
He boasts constantly, talks trash during battles, eats with his mouth open, laughs too loudly, and has all the subtlety of a freight train crashing through a wall.
Unfortunately for everyone around him, Guy is also almost always willing to throw himself into danger if it means saving someone else.
Underneath the bowl cut and oversized ego lies a man who genuinely wants to be considered a hero. The problem is that Guy doesn't know how to express vulnerability without masking it with bravado and humor.
He desperately craves respect but has spent so much of his life expecting rejection that he pushes people away before they can hurt him.

Ice constantly challenges him to become a better person without ever trying to change who he fundamentally is.

Whenever Guy begins falling back into old habits, Ice is usually the one calling him out.

Much like Flash Thompson became Spider-Man's greatest supporter, Guy becomes one of the Green Lantern Corps' most passionate defenders. He starts mentoring younger Lanterns who remind him of his former self. His philosophy becomes:
"Everybody deserves somebody who believes they can be better. Somebody did that for me."
He encourages struggling recruits rather than mocking them. Ironically, the Lantern once considered the Corps' greatest embarrassment becomes one of its finest teachers.
By the end of his arc, Guy Gardner is still unmistakably Guy Gardner.
Proud of his ridiculous bowl cut.
However, he has also become:
One of the Green Lantern Corps' most courageous members.
Other heroes eventually come to realize that Guy Gardner was never the Corps' problem child.
He was simply the hero who had to work harder than everyone else to become the man his Power Ring always knew he could be.
