The temple has 21 huge towers and 39 pavilions. The tallest of them all, Rajagopuram (height 236 feet) is one of the main towers of the temple and is also the second-highest tower in Asia.

According to history, Lord Rama handed over the Ranganathaswamy deity, which he worshipped for years, to King Vibhishana after he defeated Ravana. And while the King was returning to Lanka, Vishnu God appeared before him and told him he wished to stay in the temple as Ranganatha.

The temple was looted by the Delhi Sultanate in the early 14th century and was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century and further in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The entire temple complex has 38 buildings, 50 holy shrines, many ponds, 9 sacred Pushkaran, several interesting mural paintings and a hall of 1000 pillars, also known as 'Ayiram Kaal mandapam'.

The complex of Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam is always bustling with people, brahmins, small shops, flower stalls, shops selling idols of Gods and various food places.

Inside the temple, there are intricate and age-old carvings that leave people in awe of the architecture.

That said, India’s largest functioning temple complex is open for all people at all times. However, there are specific timings for visiting shrines. Darshans normally begin at 9:00 am and end at 8:45 pm, with small breaks in the middle. Moreover, the magnificence, glory and liveliness of Srirangam are mesmerising. Among the 365 days in a year, more than 322 days host some festive celebrations in Ranganathaswamy temple Srirangam.

People who wish to visit the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam can take a flight, train or bus. There is a train and bus station in Srirangam, while the nearest airport is at Trichy (Tiruchirapalli). Srirangam is close to Trichy and takes nearly 30 minutes by bus or taxi.

Lord Vishnu is described as Vishva-Aadhaaram in Sanskrit, the one who sustains the universe. Vishnu’s function is thus the conservation of the cosmos. Even his Vishvaroopa depicts that all creation manifests into a single essence, Vishnu. Therefore, he is the one who contains and preserves the universe.

Hindus believe that the universe is Maya or illusion, and Vishnu’s dream maintains this Maya. The Lord also descends to this earth to uphold morality and virtue whenever necessary. In Bhagavat Gita, Lord Vishnu himself says:

“Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srjamyaham”

This verse means that whenever adharma or lawlessness and vice invade the world, the Lord appears. He reinstates dharma or the right way of living. Thus, praying to the protector in a Vishnu temple frees the mind from fears of pain and protects the soul from negative influences.  

Vishnu has descended on earth nine times so far to prevent the destruction of the universe and integrity. The forms he takes to perform his role are known as the incarnations or avatars of Vishnu. Some of the shrines in the Srirangam Temple of Sri Ranganatha Swamy depict these incarnations.

As Matsya, he saved creation from a giant flood. He ensured the continuance of life in this avatar.

As Kurma, he helped the gods recover the elixir of life from the cosmic ocean. At the same time, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from this ocean and became Vishnu’s divine consort. She is the one who nourishes creation and alleviates suffering. In every Vishnu temple, devotees worship her along with the Lord.

As Varaha, the Lord recovered the earth from the grasp of a demon. Thus, he saved the world, which the devil had hidden at the bottom of the ocean.  

As Narasimha, he freed the world from a disbeliever and sinner, who wanted to kill all Vishnu’s devotees and pious beings.

As Vamana, he taught the lesson of humility and exposed how arrogance distorts the mind.  

As Parashuram, he eliminated immoral men who killed the innocent and the weak.

As Rama, a man of strong principles, he killed the demon-king Ravana. He taught that one must conquer the beast within to recognize the divine. 

As Krishna, he eliminated kings who were corrupt with excessive pride and power. Once again, he helped morality to persist and emphasized the importance of analyzing the thought before acting.  

As Buddha, he showed the world the path to liberation from suffering and pain through meditation and non-violence.

The Kalki avatar is yet to appear, which he will put an end to lawlessness and renew harmony and order.

Vishnu is also the divine arbitrator who mediates disagreements, whether among gods or humans. As Mohini, he mediated between gods and demons and prevented the evildoers from gaining immortality.

He told Arjuna (his best friend) the divine ‘Bhagwad Gita’ that’s even worshiped today. Lord Krishna is known for his pure attachment with Radha and thus, many use ‘Radhe Krishna’ as a way of greeting. He also helped Pandavas win the war of Kurukshetra in “Mahabharata’. Some people call the 21st century as the century of Lord Krishna.  

God Kali:  

God Kali is the 10th form of Lord Vishnu. You must have heard about God Kali in various mythology stories but majorly in Mahabharata and Puranas like Bhagavata Purana, Kalki Purana, and so on. God Kali is believed to have the power to restore order in the world. God Kali is also known to take away the darkness and illuminate the earth with truth and peace.  

Lord Shrinathji:

Another form of Hindu god, Krishna, Shrinathji is yet another incarnation of Lord Vishnu. A lot of stories and information about Lord Shrinathji can be found in ancient mythology literature and stories. The main temple of Shrinathji is located in Nathdwara and is one of the most worshipped temples of Lord Shrinathji. Vaishnavs and Bhakti Yoga followers mainly worship Lord Shrinathji.
