             She is hoping he will give chase and, while that isn’t what she had in mind, hearing him cast a spell behind her brings a smirk to her face.

               Not that long ago, the sound would have made her flinch, would have made her bare her teeth and snarl and bite and claw. Because she doesn’t like magic. Never has. Probably never will. Gale, though, she likes very much; so maybe it’s not all bad, not when he’s the one wielding it ( especially to indulge her and her need to play ), not when she knows he would never do a thing to hurt her.

               Batting her eyelashes, Ash serves him her best clueless ‘please explain it to me’ smile. Ah, it’s good not to let her valuable training in controlling her face go to waste. “I’d hate to disappoint him – especially that I truly do respect a dedication to the aesthetics and the dramatics and the dramatic aesthetics – but the alive sure have bones too. You humans have a whole 206 of them.” Gale’s definitely the big brain of this operation, the breathtakingly brilliant one, but Ash has him beat when it comes to anatomy; she knows how to break every single one of them without letting her victim die. She knows how to kill in one swift cut, too, or to drag it for hours. Myrkul might be the god of the dead, but death is her art and has been so for years.

               It unnerves her, the knowledge she might have been sending them to him all along.

               “See, asking was your first mistake. Never ask. Steal it back.”

               She holds back a scoff. There was a time – not that long ago, though it feels like lifetimes – when Ash feared pain. But, like many things, it was beaten out of her; all weakness plucked out of her like weeds until she would no longer scream during the harshest lessons, no longer even flinch.

               She feels like flinching now. She feels like screaming her lungs out about how unjust fate is.
