The Sun Still Rises.
Please disregard the following message if you do not hail from the safety of the womb or have not ever walked the Earth as a divine being we call βchildβ. This message is not for you.
Β Lately, questions of justice appear one way or another in every conversation that I have. Politics. Relationships. Family. Friendship. A recurring theme that permeates my skin and keeps me up at night, not unlike the nights when I was a kid and I knew my mom was coming home from Africa the next morning or the night before my dad would take me to get my first puppy. I write to you with a reminiscent heart, a hopeful heart.
Fairness.
When was the last time you felt something was fair? No compromise, no sacrifice, simply fair. My eighth grade students were the last group of humans to haveΒ trulyΒ challenged me on this notion. As you can imagine, they are hyper-focused on what is and isnβt fair, by nature of their age. Itβs an adultsβ world and they knew that. Day in and day out they vocalized the truths of the injustice all around them. But... the teachers didnβt have that same fire. The older siblings didnβt have it. The administrators didnβt have it. The security officers didnβt have it. Did I even have it?Β
So often we are fed the message that we are damaged goods-- unworthy. That because of the pain weβve caused, poor decisions weβve made, trauma we suffer, trauma we cause, backgrounds we hail from, fear itself..... we are undeserving of promoting justice. Who are we to promote equity? But my question is, who are we not to?Β
Β My Affirmation to you:
Itβs never too late to embrace the rawness, innocence and beauty of the child that is still in you. It will always be at your core. Itβs never too late to go back home to that place inside, no matter how unrecognizable the adult form may be. The sunΒ stillΒ rises in your childhood home.Β Β
