Something wasn’t right.

Bri knew it as soon as she ordered her Pikachu to use Thunder.

Some sort of silent communication passed between them and then Ash’s Pikachu was just standing there. She knew his Pikachu as well as she knew hers and she knew it could dodge this. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that it could.

But it didn’t.

And the most confusing part of it all was that Ash was smiling at her.

Not the one filled with confidence, or his usual excitement when he found a new pokemon or got a new badge. It was a soft, small one. The alarm bells in her head went off, wondering if he was doing it to try and distract her from the battle because why is he smiling like that?

Regardless, the attack landed-and Bri figured it out: Ash threw the match for her so she could battle Leon.

She wasn’t mad at Pikachu-it wasn’t its fault, no-she was mad at Ash. Bri swore she saw red as Ash headed over to her after congratulating Pikachu.

He opened his mouth, about to say something-

“What the fuck was that for?”

-and closed it, before opening it again. “What are you talking about?” He tilted his head at her, seemingly confused.

So that’s how it’s gonna be.

She grabbed him by his collar (ignoring the announcer giving her the win) and lifted him up to her eye level and hissed, trying not to cause a scene, “Don’t give me that shit! You threw the fight so I could battle Leon instead of you.”

“Well…” He tried prying her hand off his collar. “I know how important it is for you so I wanted to give you a chance to battle him.”

So pity. He felt pity for her then? Is that what that meant?

“The one time I take batting you seriously and this is how you repay me? By throwing a match? You should know better than that.”

At least now he looked guilty about it. “I know…I’m-“

”Don’t give me an I’m sorry you don’t mean, give me a better apology than that.”

”Uh…what’s going on?”

Wow, Bri must’ve been more angry than she thought if she didn’t hear Dawn come over. “Nothing.” She let Ash go and stormed off.

Ash stared after her.

”What was that about?” Dawn tried getting him to talk.

He didn’t answer.

Hitting a wall or two would be nice, but Bri didn’t feel like paying for the damages especially since they’d come out of her paycheck, so she decided to just leave the stadium for the day. Her Pokémon will find her later anyway.…

…Her alarm bells were going off for some reason. Someone she recognized was here she could tell by their footsteps but she was too angry and in a hurry to pay proper attention-

“I saw your match.”

Oh, there he was. The ice type gym leader of the Paldea region, Grusha. She’d like to avoid him but he’s standing in her way and it’s a narrow hallway. Damn.

”I have places to be.” She tried brushing past him but he was too cold and she didn’t like the cold why is he here?

”You can do better than that. I know you can.”

She stopped. Better? Is she still not good enough for him? That means she had to work harder obviously, to prove that she’ll be a great Gym Leader someday.

To prove that her losing against him was a fluke, because of course it was. She just wasn’t at peak performance that day, that’s all.
