rant about Wes Streeting + anxiety over Labour leadership incoming
i'm in the canterbury/kent area and re Wes Streeting, the way he dealt with the meningitis outbreak was not satisfactory. (he acted like it was a "teens/students only" issue without realising that Club Chemistry is not only the local club, it's the ONLY club currently open in the major Kent city - and there's buggerall else for youth to do round here.) he severely underestimated how many people would be affected and so serious action wasn't taken for far too long.
on that note, the social media ban? gets rid of one of youth's primary entertainments - no matter how harmful social media is - with little in the way of replacing it.
i could also go on about Streeting's Not Great Transgender Views, but that's a whole nother kettle of fish
so Starmer's resignation... doesn't bode well. putting aside from the obvious instability caused by Prime Minister Parkour - Streeting wouldn't be able to fix things any more than Starmer could (ie very little). Burnham seems to have his heart in the right place, but it's even more difficult than ever to trust "nice" politicians now. fact is we Do need something stronger than Labour, but too many people seem to think Reform is the answer...
this fucking country istg. it's come down to picking between the lesser of umpteen evils
anyway. glad to find your blog taking it all seriously through satire. i see so much on tumblr about USA politics that it's reassuring to find someone talking about this similarly fucked-up island's political state
I wasn’t aware about the meningitis outbreak beyond what I saw on the news. That is horrible. It genuinely seems right now as though the government has nothing but contempt for young people.
Yeah, a lot of the politicians in this country are legitimately terrible. People voted for Labour hoping for chance, hoping for something different after 14 years of Tory austerity and instead we get more of the same. To be honest, it’s not like Labour are doing much to attract new voters. They seem only to want to push potential and current voters away. I do agree Reform isn’t the answer.
I do hope Burnham (and we all know it’ll be him) will be better than Starmer, but I’m not holding my breath.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the content. While I do dive into USA politics, it’s only really if it affects the UK. This is a UK politics centric blog and I intend to keep it as such.
Congratulations to Chief Mouser Larry the Cat for outlasting yet another Prime Minister
Truly the last pillar of stability in the United Kingdom and its government
do you guys remember when we used to elect a prime minister and then they’d stay in that job until the next election? six resignations in under ten years jfc.

something something "the average country has 10000 prime ministers per election cycle" is a misconception. united kingdoms georg, which has had 10000 prime ministers since 2019, is an outlier and should have never been counted
uk social media ban is short-sighted and embarrassing and, like every other related legislation in recent years, not actually tackling the problem. The PROBLEM is predatory algorithms and insidious advertising and raw sewage pipes of unchecked misinformation pumped directly into people's eyes. And hey guess what? That's a problem for adults too!! If you legislate against predatory practices rather than acting as if it's the the children who are the problem you might actually get somewhere. You might actually prove you have a spine.
Very normal picture taken in a very normal country x
Did you hear about the whale mural in Dallas that FIFA painted over?
Awww that’s shite, it looked so nice. FIFA are such a corrupt organisation of scumbags.
The artist is sueing.
Robert Wyland’s depiction of ocean life was covered up for a World Cup promotion – now he wants retribution
Rightfully so.
very telling that even if you’re not allowed to view content related to self harm/suicide/eating disorders due to not giving up your ID on the uk internet you will still be shown relentless ads for weight loss drugs and fad diets showing unrealistic/AI generated bodies and unhealthy methods and time frames for weight loss that can only be achieved by starvation. oh and also so so many gambling ads. relentless ads for gacha and gambling services. almost like it’s not actually about protecting kids at all or something
The UK government is completely happy for you to see ads for a dozen different online casinos and betting shops on primetime TV and plastered across the internet at large, but heaven forbid Tarquin sees a nipple
I fucking hate it here

“Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Africa’s 2025 referee of the year, was turned away at Miami International Airport on Saturday due to unspecified vetting concerns despite carrying valid documents and a diplomatic passport. He would have been the first Somali referee at a men’s FIFA World Cup, but FIFA confirmed Monday he’s been removed from the tournament’s 52-referee roster.”

Fuck Trump. Fuck ICE. Fuck everything about this.
But, more than anything else, fuck the people who voted for this.
On one street, hundreds of masked men carrying bottles and bricks set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out", our reporter says.
i really don't have the words for how things have escalated to outright race riots in the last few weeks. just to collect a few of the stories the bbc is reporting in their live thread:
Families led to safety through flames (Dan Johnson) Homes were targeted and burned. Families had to be led to safety through the flames - rescued by emergency services risking their lives in the most dangerous situation. It’s what the authorities feared all day. What they warned against and pleaded not to see. The condemnation came quickly and was widespread. It wasn’t just homes, cars were also torched by young masked man in these predominantly unionist streets but the target here was immigrants and the message to entirely innocent families was: "You’re not welcome". In the north of the city, more people were forced to flee including an African family who’ve lived here for 20 years.
People being put out 'because they're black' - pastor A pastor who has been helping those in houses targeted in tonight's violence says people were being put out of their homes "because they're black". Pastor Jack McKee was at the scene where multiple houses were on fire around the Crumlin Road in north Belfast - he says some members of his church "who have been with us for 20 years" were "getting put out of their home, had their house attacked, windows smashed, houses beside them burned". "They're good Christian people and they're getting put out just because they're black," he says. "I'm doing my best to help them, it's as simple as that." [...]
Masked men shouting 'foreigners out' (Kelly Bonner) Last night on the Lower Newtownards Road in Belfast hundreds of masked men walked down the street carrying bottles, bricks and masonry. They set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out". As they walked street to street, they were banging on doors, kicking doors down and breaking windows. Masked man set cars alight and at one point I witnessed them trying to burn a car until a woman came out of her home and told them it belonged to a "local and not a foreigner" and they stopped. A young family had to be moved from their home by police. The scenes of this young family fleeing their home were really quite shocking.
We're seeing a 'race-based pogrom' in Belfast, MP tells BBC Claire Hanna, Belfast MP and leader of the Social Democratic & Labour Party, has spoken to Newsnight about the "nightmarish" attack on Monday, which she says has "understandably revulsed and shocked" people in Belfast. However, she condemned the scenes that erupted on Tuesday afternoon, suggesting that "negative actors online and politicians locally who don't really care what communities in north Belfast have been through" have used the knife attack to incite violence and seed division. "What you're seeing is a race-based pogrom. We are seeing men going door to door asking to get the foreigners out based exclusively on the colour of their skin," she has said. "It's not based on what they're contributing to society, what their status here is and it's terrifying for people in Belfast who want this sort of politics to be far beyond them."
