JDS: As we initially started to kick around concepts of the Airbender wing suits, I imagined a much more traditional approach to the costume, with a stretchy fabric that wrapped around the belt and tied off at the legs. 

BK: Joaquim’s concept was a cool design, but I wanted to bring the new generation of Airbenders into the modern era. So I continued to develop the wing suit idea into more of a contemporary flight suit. It was tricky figuring out how the wings were going to fold up when not in use. I was getting closer with these sketches, but Mike wasn’t crazy about the baggy wings, and I agreed. Once I applied Mike’s note about not making the wings baggy, the suit finally came together nicely. We never managed to weave the following bit of backstory into the show, but the idea is Asami designed these modern wing suits for the new Airbenders.

After doing the flat colors of a piece, decide where the light source should be positioned! Take my toh beta fanart as an example!!

In the amity one, the light source is the fire, for willow, i decided on the "glowy ground with magic plant stuff" and for luz, the light glyph. After deciding the location of the light source, i focused on choosing the main color for the background, imo, this affects how the shading will turn out!

Then, think of the subject/object as some kind of a 3rd object, then visualize and think of possible paths where the light would touch. If not possible, you can always search up some references and tutorials to back you up!! The alternative is using a flashlight and an object similar to the shape of ur subject!!(this helps a lot with shading too!!) In my case, since these works were kinda speedrun lmao (no u didnt hear that from me jdjsjjsjs), i thought of how the light would "touch" the face, the arms, and most esp the hand! With the help of an Overlay layer, there ya have it!!

After doing the lighting, its time for shading!! Again, you can do some visualizing or if not, use references to help! How i shade basically coloring the flat colors with a darker tone of it with a mix of the color you used for bkgd AND AND make use of the Multiply layer please!! If you can examine, youll see the shading in amity has some shades of red-ish/purple-ish hue! goes similar with willow (a bit more green-er) and luz too (a bit more blue-er)!!
