marisol escobar, or simply marisol, was a french sculpture of venezuelan heritage who worked in new york city.
art historian Cécile Whiting writes that “By displaying the essential aspects of femininity within an assemblage of makeshift construction, Marisol was able to comment on the social construct of ‘woman’ as an unstable entity…. ‘Femininity’ being defined as a fabricated identity made through representational parts. An identity which was most commonly determined by the male onlooker, as either mother, seductress, or partner.”
her work always was so much more poignant and compelling to me than any of the ol dinkos we learn about in art history, and my fondness for her work is very dear to my heart, so i thought i’d share with yall!
