Great video from one of our Featured Artists: Miwa Matreyek, CalArts Experimental Animation Program (by calarts)
Margaret Nowak used to often meet with a chemotherapy patient who loved to paint using watercolors in the infusion room of the Comprehensive Cancer Center
The patient had requested that Nowak, an art therapist, come sit with her before receiving treatment. âShe told me that she was always so scared before getting her chemo, and we would just sit down in the waiting room, look at paints and relax. It was a way to help her get through cancer,â Nowak says. The woman died after several years of battling the disease, but Nowak says she never will forget the patient and her art. SOLIPSIST is an experimental short film by Andrew Huang that recently won the Special Jury Prize at Slamdance 2012. This short film by Andrew explores the philosophical idea called solipsism. Solipsism, to summarize, is the concept that we can only be sure of what exists in our mind. This is one of the most interesting and creative videos weâve seen in a while. It also fits nicely into our credo of âinspiring others to create.â Enjoy and let Andrew Huang take you on a visual and philosophical journey! (via SOLIPSIST by Andrew Huang is a Visual and Philosophical Treat - Art Therapy)
The first project done by 11 Cedar Crest College art therapy students and a group of residents at Hidden Meadows on the Ridge was a quilt.
âWe thought it would be something they could do together and they didnât need a specific pattern. They could sit down together and discuss how it would work,â Kelly Hayes, activities director of the senior living community in West Rockhill, said.
With several types of activities involved in making a quilt, it also allowed everyone, including those who might not be able to do some parts of the job, a chance to contribute, she said.

Mat Miller | mat1t (b.1985, UK) - Streaming Eyes / Fluidity
Ginger, peaceful (and odd!), Mat Miller is a UK based young artist. Bold, ethereal, offbeat, Matâs artwork rarely carries any deep personal feelings or expressions. âMaybe on a subconscious level there is hidden feelings but none that Iâm aware of. I only wish to make art that other people will appreciate. If my work sparks feelings within other people then that is brilliant but to be honest I think far too many artists are caught up in themselves and thatâs just not my cup of tea.â Mat likes to get out with his camera to gather ideas and reference shots. As well as the beautiful outdoors he gains inspiration from the more bizarre world of humans! âWalking around antiques shops is always fun. Itâs like a sensory overload sometimes. From the art and design world, Iâm influenced by lots of contemporary street art as well as the lowbrow art and illustration movement that is so popular right now. My favourite artist is Camille Rose Garcia.â You can visit Matâs Tumblr, Facebook and shop for more work and news. (Interview with artist by ARTchipel Apr-2012)

Angel Soldier by LEE Yong-Baek
Video performance featuring soldiers in floral camouflage. From National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea:
Angel soldier is a video performance in which, through the drastic contrast between angel and soldier, without any logical proceedings and explanation whatsoever, directly and frankly expresses the social conditions of our generation. Perceptional and emotional values in an artwork are entirely different from those of an academic study in that an artwork is free from logical proceedings. The strength of directness is like a poem. If a movie is like a novel, than an artwork is like a poem. Lee Yongbaek is an artist who is able to capture this advantage and strenth an artwork.Â

By Motoi Yamamoto, constructed entirely from salt, formed into very delicate blocks that crumble when an earthquake is simulated along with this piece. It has a really strong symbolism with human ingenuity and what can be created, but just as easily destroyed.
