Do you ever wake up in the morning and get sad that no one has read your works while you slept? Do you ever feel bad that no one really gives you kudos or comments? Do you wonder if people really like your work? Do you wonder if you're wasting your time?
honestly? no. but listen, that doesn't mean you can't or mustn't feel this way. you ask for my personally feelings, so I give you my own personally feelings (which is that it doesn't matter if people read my works or not, because while hits, kudos and comments are deeply appreciated, I write for me and for the join of writing, so that alone is enough. plus, before I write for my current fandom, Squid Game, some of the previous fandoms/characters I wrote about in the past were way less popular, literally most of the fics for one of the fandoms I used to write about were from me, so I'm way more than used to writing and posting with barely any audiences, let alone kudos or comments — I didn't stop writing about those fandoms because of lack of engagement, I only stopped writing about those fandoms and moved to Squid Game because my brain decided to shift my hyperfixation to Squid Game). but my own personally feelings apply to me alone. so it doesn't mean it's wrong if you were to feel the way that you said.
if lack of engagement discourages you, I'm afraid I can't tell you to "just stop caring" because while I personally don't care that much for hits/kudos or comments (again, I appreciate every hit, kudos and comments I receive, but they are not the reason why I enjoy writing in the first place), I know it's not that easy for other people.
so to be honest, I'm not sure if I can give you any advice on how to deal with this, if you were looking for an advice or if what I'm saying helps. but maybe, you could try writing for yourself — and by writing for yourself, I mean just write what you want to read without posting it. so no one can read it. I know it may contradict the point of your ask about wanting audiences and engagement (which is very valid). but what I'm trying to say is that if you can write it without posting it, if you can write it literally just for you, and if you find yourself enjoying the joy of writing, then maybe you can trick your mind into focusing less on whether or not strangers read your works, and more on "the joy of writing for yourself first and foremost".
because, and I am only speaking for myself, the act of writing alone is fun. writing alone is enough to make me happy. so I know I am never wasting my time, because I don't find joy in whether or not strangers read my works. I don't write for strangers. I write for me, for the love and passion I have for my comfort characters. I find joy in getting to write and create a world for these characters where I am in charge and I have all the control/freedom.
my time writing is never wasted, because it's what makes me happy.

See the thing about the whole Claude AI exposing document thing is that as great as it sounds in theory, I can see how this leads to even more harassment and witch hunts in practice.
People have said the tag is unique to Claude only and therefore there’s no way a human-made fic could have gotten wrongly flagged as AI. But how accurate and trustworthy worthy this is, really? Even IF, hypothetically, this method is proved correct 99 times out of 100, that still means “there is 1 time out of 100 times where a human-made fic is wrongly flagged as AI due to an error”. And that to me nullified the credibility of the whole doc. Like, sorry for not trusting another newly-introduced machine and for being skeptical about it.
“But how could the tag get there if the author didn’t use AI?” Besides the possibility of an error, I can already see people weaponize this method by faking screenshots of fics that are about the ships or topics that they hate to make it look like these fics have Claude tag in them, and then spreading those fake screenshots around. And the worst part is that authors cannot prove their innocence because people would just say “they got caught so now they removed the Claude tag from their fics”.
Like. I hate AI, but I hate witch hunts, accusations and harassments more.
These comments below sum it up really well.

Calling incest "taboo" when it's a literal form of abuse is not the wording I would use to defend its presence or people's interest in it on a site.
I use the word "taboo" because I only refer to "fiction", as in a taboo topic people write about in fiction. not real-life. fiction.
game of thrones has incest in it (so it is in a way taboo). and it is allowed to exist on a huge platform like hbo, because it's fiction and taboo fiction is NOT a crime.
lolita is taboo, but it's fiction, and it deserves to exist without being banned or censored.
non-con fics are taboo. because while it is vile and a crime in real life, just like incest, in fiction space where no one in real life is harmed, it is not a crime and it's legally allowed to exist and have a platform like ao3.
also no, I am not "defending the portrayal of taboo topics in fiction" even though I do love writing and reading about non-con. I am defending people's rights and freedom to create and consume whatever they want, however they want, including dark and taboo topics. as long as no one in real life is harmed.
thoughtcrimes are not real. and censorship is a fascist tool. period.
Little traditional art the clown practice in the spirit of Christmas lmao
If ao3 truly is entirely against censorship, then it can't censor anything. Including Palestine donation links.
The monetary issues make it seem more reasonable, but it doesn’t change that it's censorship. It doesn’t change that anything about Palestine donations gets taken down. It is still, at the end of the day, censorship. Furthermore, if ao3 can take donations for itself, it can allow donations for people who actually fucking need it. Why are there no monetary issues with ao3 receiving money? But it's suddenly an issue when donation to Palestine are involved? People’s lives matter more than fics.
this is wrong. I have already answered this exact question here and here
please educate yourself because you’re just blatant wrong. nonprofit organizations can and do receive donations for themselves because being a nonprofit organization doesn’t mean paying out of their own pocket, being a nonprofit organization doesn’t mean “yay we get to do it all for free”.
a nonprofit organization needs donation money to keep the organization functioning.
so nonprofit organizations are definitely allowed to ask for people’s donations FOR THEMSELVES.
and as an organization who hosts millions of transformative works about other people’s copyrighted characters, ao3 would have faced thousands of lawsuits and gotten taken down years ago if they allowed other people and/or organizations, including palestine, to gain money through them.
this has been stated very clear in the beginning in their terms of service, it’s something everybody has to have clicked “I agree” on before they can make an account there.
ao3 does have its rules and terms of service, and it is NOT censorship when they rightfully take anything that isn’t fanworks down (as stated in their tos: only fanworks are allowed, so there is NO censorship as long as it’s actually fanworks, no censorship does not mean anybody can violate their tos), it’s called following rules and keeping the site from the risk of legal action and getting shut down.
doesn’t matter if it’s palestine or someone else who needs money, a rule is a rule. you cannot just bend it because it’s something you think is importance. the second ao3 allows someone else to gain money through their site that is for works about copyrighted characters, that’s when they faces lawsuits — but they can receive donations for themselves in order to run the site because that’s literally how being a nonprofit organization works.
A little comic based on this interaction. Found out the scare actors are dating irl, and I got their approval to do a little comic of their characters
