Fruits of the Uncarved Block
Goodbye Shahman’s Van
Goodbye Shahman’s Van. You will be dearly missed. You were a vessel for our ambitions, our art, our adventures. A place where we ate, napped, and conversed in. A door slowly slides open along a track, on arrival. A ritual of hauling and unloading. A pile of cassette tapes spilling out. Cautiously maneuvering a tight spot. The road, the journey, the trees passing by, the destinations are unending.
We are excited to announce the first Uncarved Block release of Spring, 2016.
A four-way split between american scene stalwarts Davega Bike (TN), Rad Rad Riot (AR), Shahman (Canada), and Nouveau (IL).
Six songs to send off the cold and grey. Six songs to give you the strength to sink your feet back into the lake. Anthems for Revolution Spring. Sounds to sooth the wounds earned from protest. Sounds to cool the burnt patches of skin by occupying to closely, the steps of your state capital buildings that you set aflame. Tread with ease into these new beginnings with Family Force 4.

A note from Shahman:
Hey everyone, we’re demoing a new record. We’re letting things steep longer than we usually would so don’t expect much for a while. In the meantime, come and watch us play some new songs in Toronto and Montreal next week:
Oct.23- Toronto, ON @ D-Beatstro w/Edhochuli, Surinam
Oct.24th- Montreal, QC @ Turbohaus w/Edhochuli, Belafonte
Joucous earned a review for his new album “The flowering shroud of the self”.
Tapes are coming this fall but in the meantime check out this review and take a listen while you’re at it.

Spring of the Uncarved Block, May 2015
As the long awaited sun has risen, so too has Uncarved Block.
Our first release was awarded to us by Milwaukee, WI’s Gauss; an absolutely perfect first release for the label. Released on cassette, the band has shared two songs with us, both of which sound to me like the rejuvenation of a scene that is too often caught chasing its own tail. Gauss is in the midst of planning some late summer shows and a trip to Canada.
Our second release is only a few steps behind and will be that of Shahman’s Rob Johnson. A sparse experiment performed under the guise Fool, the record is a voyeuristic look into the mornings of someone searching for their purpose through music. Recorded spontaneously in single takes, the record features an out of tune banjo, a borrowed guitar, and a pan. Like I said before everyone, it’s an experiment.
Visual artist, musician, and 80’s-90’s hardcore enthusiast Joucous will be delivering his new record to us this summer which will likely be the label’s third release. Expect weird. Expect something never done before.
While the mind requires at times the odd and dissonant, the ear must retreat to something round and warm. This is why Tang will be a good fit. Shahman’s Peter Johnson tinkers in his basement creating snippets of warm and meditative compilations reminiscent of Guided by Voices or the Dischord Record outcasts Lungfish. This tape will be released this summer but is best kept for the cold, impending darkness of the fall.
Finally, Toronto’s Shahman will also be joining Uncarved Block for a future release and is writing in Peter’s laundry room. We can’t wait to see what kind of music a laundry room can produce. They will also be on the road this September with Radradriot from Little Rock, AR and will be bringing the Uncarved Block catalogue with them. Pretty cool.
Milwaukee for me, has always been a special place musically and otherwise. It’s a home away from home. A stronghold of punk ideology. A final frontier of sorts. I’ve played many shows here, slept on couches and been served food by people who had little but gave like they had plenty. These people quickly became some of my greatest friends.
This is why I consider it an honour that the first release on ‘Uncarved Block’ will go to Milwaukee’s ‘Gauss’.
These are the four humans responsible for Soft Face, Soft Gaze//”Charm”. Two tracks sitting just under ten minutes that manage to lay a beautiful path of fiercely bending chords brought to earth again by the mellow notes of a trumpet pointing to the sky. No matter how high the notes reach or the vocals beg for you to climb, they are grounded by the balanced breath of drum and bass.
Beyond the descriptors I could simply say that it’s a refreshing take on our 90′s predecessors. A sound from a scene that is often both regurgitated or ritualized by many these days. Gauss seems to hold a yearning for something new, something real.
Let’s hear them out.
This is ‘Uncarved Block’.
Art and music is the path we have chosen in life; it is our direction and purpose. Whatever happens to catch our eye along this path we pick up and bring to you. The art we share is an extension of the uncarved block and we are an extension of them. In carrying this mentality we hope to not just build a roster of artists to work with but instead form a community in which we can all be a witness to. More than anything, we will work to protect and preserve art in it’s most intuitive and honest form and not give in to the easy trappings of money, hype, or celebrity that are so easily accepted within the artistic community today. We look to share and create art that is made for the mere purpose of survival. Art for the sake of art.
