Poor Unfortunate Souls

You see, even though Lysander is outwardly a very stoic and reserved man he is a passionate artist and a devout follower and champion of a deity who is, among many things, a goddess of artists and midnight. As such, one of her tenets is that no work of art must ever be finished during the light of day. (Her holy symbol is even a moon with a smirking mouth. Very on the nose lol)

And Lysander, being devout, follows that to the letter. He does all of his painting in the dead of night after the world has fallen asleep. Sometimes that's fine - he'll paint indoors with a candle or maybe the moon is extra bright that night, but sometimes... there is no moon, no light to paint from. Which is fine, still, for him as his demonic blood - cursed though he feels it is - grants him one boon: the gift of Darkvision.

The only thing is, Darkvision works only in black and white.

He can paint in a pitch black room and see what he's doing just fine but only in a world devoid of colour.

Now for a painter that could be a problem, but Lysander revels in it. Painting, for him, is not only a way to commune with his goddess but also a way to vent his feelings, work through his struggles and the many traumas life has thrown at him, and in turn his art often leans into the realm of expressionism, with bright bold colours and striking composition. When he paints in the light he chooses his colours carefully, but when he paints in the dark he mixes colours blind, using only the values he can see to create his pieces. It's not until the morning and the light of day, after he's finished his painting and gone to sleep and woken up again fresh that he actually sees the finished piece in colour.

And that's the most cathartic sort of experience for him. Like a form of therapy. At night he paints blind and follows his heart more than his eyes, and then in the light of day he gets to see what that all means.

Sometimes it's a discordant mess - like he often feels he is - and sometimes it's a beautiful expression of self.
