It continued to follow, pausing any time the man looked back. Coyly pretending to be a simple shadow cast by a leaf, of a newspaper blown across the street. The Wicked God stalked the man who had been dead, sliding underneath a row of bushes.
The cover allowed it to move faster, easily overtaking his stride and moving ahead to the end of the block. Seeing the front of him was all it needed. Inky black shadow pooled on the sidewalk in the silhouette of an expired lamp post, billowing, and rising up into the vague shape of a man. Slowly, details came into focus, until it became a mirror image of its prey. Cast in shadow.
It stared across the way at him through two black pools for eyes. Waiting for what he would do.
That pit of dread wouldn't go away- it took all he had not to break out into a sprint, to run where he didn't even know, but just to get away from it, whatever it was. Sometimes he could swear he'd just seen something move when he glanced over again, but still... nothing there.
A loose quarter was in the pocket of his leather jacket, and he turned it over and over in his hand, trying to find comfort in the repetitive motion and maybe a bit of luck as his thumb ran over each side on the turn. Heads, he wins. He just needs to get some sleep, maybe, and maybe he won't feel like he's being chased down by phantoms. He looked over his shoulder again, sighing half in relief and half in self-exasperation at the banality of the world behind him.
He rolled the coin over in his pocket once more.
When he turned his head back, he stopped dead in his tracks at the sight, blood running cold. The familiar feeling was almost suffocating, any words he could even think to say felt smothered in his throat, and some strange part of him felt pulled towards whatever was wearing his face over there, and an even stranger part felt ready to comply. He shook his head, swallowing hard and took a step back in rebellion, slowly and cautiously, eyes never leaving his mirror image.
Any amount of satisfaction the entity felt at seeing the expression on the man's face was no reflected in its expression. It stood perfectly still, watching. Its prey would come. Despite their own fear and instincts, humans were still curious to a fault. Always needing answers.
Need.
That was something it understood.
The shadow took a step forward to advance, the exact opposite foot taking the stride simultaneously.
Oh, a challenge.
That was to be expected, with this man's history behind him. He had seen the other side. But how long could he resist a power that had brought him back from the grave? The Wicked God recognized that life force as soon as it took his shape.

No matter which direction he moved, the being shifted around his peripheral. To the right, to the left, behind him, and then in front of him. At first, it was curious, watching, reading its prey. Somehow, this man was different from the one he seeks revenge on. But he looks like him.
The shadow twists and morphs, molding into shape as if from clay. Out steps a form that resembles Yami, but the eyes are inky black and the entire form is shaded.
"Are you the one called Yuugi?"
It whispers, voice crackling though the air like radio static.
He threw the knives. Trying to keep out of reach of the tendrils. "I will gladly be in the way." Yami felt one or two brush against him. Raising up his hand to summon his staff. Gathering fire magic. Admittedly he wasn't certain of how effective these attacks would be. Yami hoped to block some of the other's at least.
Swiftly, silently, the shadows lashed out, swarming. Attempting to grab, to strike, twisting and morphing into whatever shape necessary to either dodge or attack him. The Wicked God sidestepped the thrown knives, heading directly for Yami. Aiming to close in, cover, and smother him. It considered attempting to possess him even, since he did have information that was needed.

It whispers, voice crackling though the air like radio static.
Naturally he noticed. Wondering if any of his usual attacks would work. "Hm. I cannot allow that. He is a friend of mine." If Yuugi had attempted to kill this one? There must have been a good reason. Yami readied his knives. One or two imbued with light magic. Others had fire or shadow magic.
"I ask for you to leave him be. Lest I have to harm you. And I have harmed a god before."
That did not give the entity any pause as it and the shadowy tendrils moved in. The card effect had stipulated that the strength would be equal to the strength of the opponent plus one. The Wicked God had already tested its abilities before as it gathered itself together.
"I will get my vengeance, one way or the other. If you will not assist then you are in the way."
The Wicked God is mainly after Yuugi only because that was who it saw on the other side of the field and that is what people were calling Yako's opponent. Hence, why it took the shape of Yuugi and not Other Yuugi. (Which frankly is solid proof that the physical changes are for the audience only).
It knows of the others, but they were merely bystanders it wasn't as concerned with. If the Wicked God could find Yako, it would go after him too, as the one who actually destroyed the cards.

That raised his guard even more. He kept an eye on those shadows. Ready to burn them if they got too close. "Perhaps. However I am not one to give out such information so easily. Especially to strangers." The royal felt like he had heard about these beings before. Though God or not, Yami was protective over Yuugi.
"What exactly is your business with him, Wicked God?"
The shade began to move closer. Gliding across the pavement rather than walking. Streetlamps flickered, threatening to go dark.
"He is responsible for my attempted murder. Thought I would return the favor."

Clearly he wasn't getting away from this... Thing. It was almost like being trapped in a nightmare. However Yami knew he was not dreaming. Eventually he stopped running and turned to face the being. His red and green eyes widened in shock. This figure's appearance was eerily familiar.
"There was a time I shared his name. But no. I am called Yami. Who... Or what... Are you?"
The dark double tilted its head, though the expression did not change. It was processing the information, calculating. The shadows around the street flickered as tendrils began to reach out.
"So you must know where to find the one by that name."
"They call me The Wicked God."
