Why: I very rarely work with these colours. I also want to explore more powerful/impactful designs.

3 Considered Concepts and Appealing Characteristics: Shadow Play (Fun for me to intentionally work with dimension. Could use my own photography. Let me work with interesting concepts), Dynamic Diagonals (Work with leading lines. Very rarely work with not centered composition. Could be charming.), Perfect Rectangles (Fits within my skill level. Allow me to work primarily with type. Allow me to work  with contained elements.)

Chosen Concept: Dynamic Diagonals

Why: Would give me a good opportunity to practice working with leading lines and would be incredibly different from anything I’ve done thus far.

This week, I decided to illustrate utilizing the concept of dynamic diagonals. My design is inspired by dynamic diagonals, and you can see that because of…the diagonals. In all seriousness, the idea inspired my design's orientation and overall feeling. I decided to illustrate without a specific subject because I very rarely work with patterns or designs that don't have a defined subject. This week would be a good opportunity for me to try something new. I was also vaguely inspired by the laser security systems in spy/action movies.

Room for interpretation.), Propaganda (I rarely design in this style. Gives me the opportunity to be unexpected. I could potentially express an important message.), Public Service Campaign (Allow me to express important messages. Bring attention to things I find important. Could use illustration and/or photos. (mixing mediums))

Chosen Concept: Naive Mascots

Why: I think it’ll be nice for me to be able to have fun with the concept. It might be nice for me to be able to be silly with my design and have fun. (Plus Faye recommended it)

3 Considered Concepts and Appealing Characteristics: Abstraction (Would challenge me creatively. Is a concept I rarely design with. Would be interesting to look into unique concepts.), White Space (Would let me practice utilizing negative space. Force me to work with a limited colour pallet. Would challenge my creative thinking.), Less is More (Would allow me to learn more type tools in illustrator/photoshop. Would allow me to practice using organic shapes. Would challenge my thinking around design layout.)

Chosen Concept: Abstraction

Why: Is a challenge for me, but I don’t think it’ll cause me unnecessary stress. Will allow me to explore unique concepts/themes.

Is different from my usual style.), Loud Typography (Would give me the opportunity to use photography. I see a lot of potential freedom. Would challenge me to make the type the focus instead of the graphic elements.), and Ransom Notes (Challenge me to work with complex compositions. Gives me the opportunity to play with texture. Would challenge me to work primarily with type.)

Chosen Concept: Loud Typography

Why: I want to challenge myself to make type the primary focus of my design. I also want to work with photography.

Key Words: Powerful, Impactful, Intense, Expressive

I was very overwhelmed with the number of options I had this week. The reading break was very exciting for me so I decided to use my extra energy to my advantage and challenge myself. The entire composition is inspired by the feeling I had when I stepped on the stage for the first time in over a year and a half. I used one of my favorite photos from one of my solos that I competed with this week. I chose this photo specifically because the position I am in is a very powerful jump and I wanted my design to have a powerful impact. I chose the word "believe" because it is a very positive and important message that can be summed up in one word. I was very nervous to step on stage and it took a lot of inner strength for me to get out there and dance, but I did it! The entire composition was also loosely inspired by the Billy Elliot musical poster.

3 Considered Concepts and Appealing Characteristics: Supergraphics (A lot of potential direction, Can work with lots of colour, Gives me the opportunity to work with exaggerated shapes), Night Spectaculars (There is lots of inspiration for me, I can work with multiple art forms, I could potentially use my own photos), and Big Book Look (I can work with texture, I can work on using negative space, I can explore simple compositions.)

Why: I think lights can be extremely beautiful and there is a lot of potential for unique concepts. I am very inspired by the places I've been to and I've been to a lot of big cities with beautiful lights and architecture.

This week I struggled to pick a concept because there is so many ways to be inspired by night spectaculars. I landed on doing Tower Bridge in London, England because I had the opportunity to walk the bridge at night with my family. I was so moved when I was there and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to be there. This collection of photos includes one side of tower bridge, the view from inside the top of the bridge, and the type is a photo of a sign that is on the mirror ceiling inside the bridge. The textbook specifically mentioned the Eiffel Tower lights (which I'm lucky enough to have witnessed), and I immediately thought of all the big cities I have traveled to and I was very inspired by that example specifically.

Chosen Concept: Vanitas

Why: I think this is a really unique subject and I am excited to work with abstract art and learn to use imperfections to my advantage. I also wanted experiment with darker moods/tones and subjects.

3 Considered Concepts and Appealing Characteristics: Visual Puns (Can be silly/fun, Interesting contrast between literal and abstract ideas, Allows for total creativity), High Contrast (Can use photography or illustration, I would be working with a limited colour pallet — something I don’t typically do, Allows me to work with an abstract art form and subject), Expression of Speed (Uses leading lines — a compositional element i don’t use often, I can combine different art forms (i.e. photos and illustration), I can experiment with abstract style).

Chosen Concept: Expression of Speed

Why?: This specific design idea will give me the chance to experiment with combining art forms and experimenting with different compositional ideas. It also Gives me the opportunity to explore different types of subjects.

Why?: I chose this form of media because there is a wide range of design inspiration I could utilise. There is so many genres and types of books and I was excited to explore multiple ideas.

3 Considered Styles and Appealing Characteristics: Art Deco (Line art, Metallic Colours, and Geometric design elements), Bauhaus (Geometric shapes, Minimalistic composition, and Simple colour schemes), and Constructivism (Simple shapes, Basic colour pallets, and Simplistic composition)

Chosen Style: Art Deco

Why?: The style plays to my artistic strengths, such as simplistic and geometric design elements, while still challenging my creative thinking.

Key Words: Geometric, Stylized, Symmetry, Simplicity, Line art.

Software: Adobe Illustrator

Art Deco was an art movement that was most prevalent during the 1920s and 30s. Art Deco was inspired by the modernity and technical advancements at the time of its creation. This is why art in the Art Deco style includes metallic colours, like gold, bronze, and copper, and other modern materials, like wood and other metals. Art Deco is characterized by symmetry, geometric shapes, repeating elements, simplicity, and modernity. Art Deco is typically heavily stylized, so the subject and concepts of art in this movement are rarely accurate, plausible or realistic. Common forms used in Art Deco are stylized versions of florals, sunrays, animals, and man-made objects or materials.

For my design, I took inspiration from “old Hollywood” or the “golden age of film.” The films' simple yet elegant look and feel contributed to my design choices. I was also inspired by the 1920s fashion, interior design and architecture that was everywhere in the real world. My concept is a stylized version of the Hollywood sign. I wanted to explore how the Art Deco movement interacts with Hollywood as a place, style, and idea.
