For many Romans, their profession was important to their identity and how they wanted to be remembered. This can be seen in funerary slabs like this where the art focuses on their job rather than the deceased. Maritime imports were vital for feeding and supplying the people of Rome so such importers were important to the empire. Here a large sailing ship unloads amphoras of liquids to a smaller boat that would have been unloaded on shore.

Fabritius died young, caught in the explosion of the Delft gunpowder magazine on 12 October 1654, which destroyed a quarter of the city—over 100 people were killed and thousands were injured—along with his studio and many of his paintings. Only about a dozen paintings have survived.
