He travelled from Tahiti to England with Captain James Cook in 1773-1774, becoming the first Pacific Islander to visit England. Mai spent two years in London, where he was much admired within London high society. Renowned for his charm, quick wit and exotic good looks, he quickly became a favourite of the aristocratic elite. He returned to his homeland in 1777 and died there two years later, possibly from an infectious disease.
