It took a long time to trust the creature, but after years of nothing but curious child like helping tentacles the townsfolk began to softer to it. They named it Julian, and Julian became the best shepherd in the valley not to mention the greatest deterrent to external threat that had ever graced the once war torn valley. Julian mostly tended to its sheep, helping with heavy lifting when asked, and burbling inquisitively at any new thing it came across. It was able to read minds, but mostly chose not to, instead relying on a mostly ineffective game of charades played between and it and exasperated human interpreters to learn new things about its world. The sheep, it seemed to understand, but the humans, no matter how much it tried, still seemed fascinatingly obscure. They never learned where Julian came from, beneath the mountains presumably, but nothing like it ever emerged again, nor did Julian seem to know what it was or where it had come from. But when it passed away, centuries old, surrounded by loved friends and loved sheep,  it became clear that it hardly mattered. Julian was a villager, a strange one, and a popular one with imperial wizards and their probing questions, but a villager all the same. It was a weird world, but not everything weird was wrong.
