Here’s something I’m almost positive I’ve never posted to the blog before (in all my 8000+ posts) – a vintage operating room. But I don’t think I can deny this is indeed a very Modern operating room. It’s at Beth Israel, Stuyvesant Square. I’m guessing those tiles might have been light blue or some other light, soothing yet anti-septic-seeming color. Anyway, since I actually work for a medical school for a living, I had to post this! -Wendy

The Last of Mrs. Cheyney and Adrian in 1929

Who but Gilbert Adrian would create a robe de style with a bias-cut bodice? There is no other way to explain the way that Norma Shearer moves in the gown in the first two photos from the opening scene, and yet, you have to marvel at such a combination of old and new. Robe de style showed up in the 1920s, a throwback to an 18th-century style with enormous hip pads, and was a clear rejection of the new, shorter styles which were the rage. But bias cuts were a new phenomenon and would not become the fashion until the 1930s. The style combination reflects the same mixture in Shearer’s character who is a virtuous woman but a jewel thief. As you can see, she could look very modern im her pajamas in their Art Deco glory.

Based on a stage play, this version is much talkier than the later one with Joan Crawford, and features a young Basil Rathbone as the libertine who fall for Shearer.
