Today I created these quick pieces during an art support group discussing primary and secondary emotions. In our 30 minutes of art creation (post group discussion) I was able to paint these two pieces.

One piece shows the fire of my anger surrounding and protecting the sadness and fear of my inner child as they sit hugging themselves amongst their tears. It reads “your anger is sacred” and “it protects your inner child”.

The other piece shows an ethereal creature that looks similar to a crow, wings outspread as it rises like a phoenix from the fire and ash. Along the fire and ash it reads on one side “your anger is a guide” and on the other “your anger is a compass”. Along the wings it says “to heal” and “to transform”.

I thought a lot about the fierce protection of my inner child, the kid in me that was never protected from the things that happened to me. How my anger often stems from the fears that were birthed from childhood traumas.

But I also thought about the work I’ve done to process the traumas I’ve experienced; how I now honour my anger. It helps me to see when I am feeling unsafe. It helps me to speak up for myself and hold boundaries. I’m still emerging from the flames and am amidst the transformation, but I can see the freedom and power I’m finding as I give my inner child the things it never received in the past so we can move forward together.

The Abundance of Autumn Equinox

Today as part of a Grief + Gratitude workshop, in honour of Patty Berne, Sins Invalid led us through creative process to express holding grief and gratitude at the same time.

This is the form my grief takes for me today, in gouache, swirling colours.

The sentences read:

“Learning to hold grief and joy at the same time”

“I am worthy even when I’m struggling”

“Beauty can still be found amongst the pain”

“My grief shows my capacity to love”
